Man advertises on digital billboard to help wife land a job

Hire Wife Digital Billboard

Definitely a creative way to reach a potential employer, the trend of purchasing advertising space on digital billboards is catching on.

Detailed on ABC News earlier this week, a 38-year-old Ohio native named Brandon Stuard purchased space on two electronic billboards within Toledo in order to help his spouse find a new job. Holly Stuard, his 36-year-old wife, was let go from the University of Toledo’s Master of Business Administration program after a series of budget cuts eliminated her job last year. After spending many months attempting to land a new job the traditional way, her husband decided to surprise her with the two electronic billboards. When the digital billboard displays the bright pink advertisement, anyone driving by will see “Please Hire My Wife” in giant letters along with a picture of Holly Stuard and a contact email address. In addition, the billboard lists the fact that she has both business and academic experience along with a MBA.

job searchWhen asked about viewing the billboards for the first time, Holly Stuard stated “I was definitely shocked. He (Brandon Stuard) made plans that we’d go out to dinner at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants on the other side of town so that we’d pass the billboard on our way. Our older son saw it before I did and said, ‘Momma that picture looks like you‘.”

Regarding the period of unemployment, Holly Stuard said “It’s been such a long time-frame and there’s so many ups and downs with a job search, and I think he’s felt a little helpless. He felt this was a way he could actually do something because it’s been a difficult process.”

According to the Toledo Free Press, advertising on the digital billboard was relatively inexpensive since the display is shared between multiple advertisers each day. Tolson Media and Lamar Advertising, the owner of the digital space, charges between $60 to $100 per day to display the advertisement. In addition, the management team offered Brandon Stuard a better price and longer time frame due to the purpose of the advertisement. Stuard was able to purchase a digital billboard in downtown Toledo and a digital billboard near a local shopping mall for several days at a price of $700.

Bennett Olsen Billboard Hire MeWhile the digital billboards haven’t attracted any job offers as of yet, the Stuards have received a vast amount of emails within the couple good luck as well as emails sharing similar stories about unemployment.

The billboard has also been shared repeatedly by family and friends on social networks like Facebook in addition to attracting the local news media. While the two billboards were a significant expense for the Sylvan-based family, Holly Stuard indicated that seeing the two billboards has revived her excitement about looking for a new job.

During April 2012, a 22-year-old Minnesota man named Bennett Olsen did something similar by purchasing space on a digital billboard with the phrase “Hire Me!” in giant lettering along with his face and the URL to his personal site. Within a matter of weeks, Olsen landed a sales job at a nearby company after going on several interviews. Olsen spent $300 for the ad placement to run on the digital billboard in downtown Minneapolis. Over a 24-hour period, the ad would rotate constantly and appear for a full eight seconds each time.

Walmart testing iPhone ‘Scan & Go’ checkout system

Walmart supercenter

Walmart is testing out a new 'Scan & Go' app which could mean you'll never have to line up at one of its checkouts ever again.

Retail giant Walmart is apparently testing out a new iPhone app which allows shoppers to scan items as they move around the store, bagging them up as they go. Payment is made at an automated checkout – as opposed to via the handset – once all the shopping’s done.

Reuters reports that tests of Walmart’s ‘Scan & Go’ system are currently being carried out at just one store – a supercenter in Rogers, Arkansas, close to the company’s headquarters. Store staff, as well as their friends, have been asked to take part in the 60-minute trial sessions, with $100 cash and a $25 gift card offered in exchange for their time.

Long lines at the checkout are of course one of the main sources of frustration for today’s shoppers. New technology has allowed many big stores to do away with checkout staff in favor of automated checkouts, but even though many of these may be open at one time, lines still form during busy times. Scan & Go may be one way to get shoppers in and out the door in super-fast time. Unless you get caught in a line of people waiting to pay, that is.

“We’re continually testing new and innovative ways to serve customers and enhance the shopping experience in our stores,” Walmart spokesman David Tovar told Reuters.

Commenting on Walmart’s Scan & Go system, Paul Weitzel, managing partner at retail consulting firm Willard Bishop, said, “All of the effort is to speed your way through the checkout so that we can reduce costs and improve the shopping experience. With smartphones and improved technology we’re only going to see more of this.”

It’s not clear what security measures are in place with the system – for example, what would stop an unscrupulous shopper from ‘accidentally’ failing to scan an item before slipping it into a bag in their cart?

Walmart already has a smartphone app available, though its functionality is limited to things like allowing shoppers to make lists and giving information on which items are in stock.

How do you like the sound of scanning as you shop? Or would you like to see a return to the days when the only way to pay for your goods meant interacting with a human being?

Amazon to unveil cut-price Kindle Fire with ads, says report

Amazon to release 5 or 6 new tablets

According to reports, Amazon is planning to unveil two versions of its upgraded Kindle Fire tablet next week – one regular model and a cheaper version supported by ads.

As has already been reported, Amazon is holding an event next Thursday in Santa Monica where it’s widely expected the e-commerce giant will unveil its next-generation Kindle Fire tablet, and possibly a brand new e-reader, or updated Touch.

The latest news, reported by the Wall Street Journal, is that the company will apparently launch not one but two Kindle Fire tablets next week – one regular model, and one ad-supported model, sold at a price even more competitive than the original Fire (ie. under $199).

The ad-supported ‘Special Offers’ platform has been a feature of its range of e-readers for a while now, allowing buyers of the device to make a saving in exchange for having ads displayed on the screen. The basic ad-supported Kindle e-reader can be picked up for $79, that’s $30 less than the no-ads model.

Cnet reported on Friday that the upgraded Kindle Fire will incorporate “more hardware improvements, including a faster processor, a camera, physical volume controls, and an HDMI port. It will also have larger storage capacity, but it will still not be expandable.” This according to “a person who has seen the products”

Google’s recently released 7-inch Nexus 7 tablet, like the Fire also priced at $199, has caught the eye of many consumers, and so with its second-generation tablet Amazon will hope a cheaper ad-supported device with more bells and whistles will help it to regain the initiative at the lower end of the tablet market.

In other news, talk of a 10-inch Fire to compete with Apple’s 9.7-inch iPad appears to be fading, with Cnet reporting that plans for a larger device have been shelved, at least for now.

With Apple also expected to unveil an iPad Mini in the coming weeks, consumers on the hunt for a tablet this holiday season are certain to be spoiled for choice. Would an ad-supported Kindle Fire for, say, $169 be of interest to you?

Chomp makes first appearance in iOS 6 beta update to Apple’s App Store

app store ios6 upgrade

Apple's latest update to iOS 6 beta includes a redesign of its App Store search layout -- a move that has Apple-acquired Chomp's name all over it.

Apple’s App Store is getting a makeover. The redesigned mobile marketplace first showed up this week in the beta version of iOS 6, the final version of which is expected to launch along side the sixth-generation iPhone sometime in the second half of September. The App Store will give each searched-for app its own “card” — a design change that has app search and discovery platform Chomp all over it.

Back in February Apple scooped up Chomp for $100 million cash, a deal that transferred the 20 person team and Chomp’s technology to Apple. The iOS 6 update to the App Store, as first reported by Jail Break Nation, is the first look that we’re getting of Chomp and its technology’s integration into Apple. The most noticeable parallel to Chomp is the card-like interface that can be navigated by swiping from top to bottom. In iOS 5, Apple displays search results in a list format that shows users the app’s icon, rating, and price. Those characteristics remain the same. What’s different, however, are the first screen shots of each application that are prominently displayed as a preview within each card.

Behind the scenes, it’s evident that the far more robust algorithm provided by Chomp’s technology has been adopted by Apple. The current version of Apple’s App Store search engine returns different results, compared to iOS 6 (as Jail Break Nation shows us in the video). Apps that would otherwise appear as recommendations in iOS 5 are not present in the iOS 6 results.

With the introduction of the new App Store, the enhanced algorithm could spell trouble for existing developers and their businesses. Topping the App Store charts (particularly cracking the top 25 to reach the front page of searches) is imperative to an app’s success. So those hit by the new search algorithm have some worrying to do. Then again, this wouldn’t be the first time that Apple has been changing its algorithm, and just as Google tweaks its search algorithm on a regular basis, it surely won’t be the last.

Chomp may also offer Apple something else altogether: the confidence in its recommendation engine. The Genius Recommendations button was finally released in the latest update to the App Store’s beta and appears on the navigation bar at the very bottom of the App Store’s interface. This button recommends new apps that Apple users may be interested in downloading based on the analysis of the apps that have already been downloaded onto their Apple device.

Check out the video of the new App Store below, and let us know your thoughts about the new interface.

Google closes TV Ads program

After five years, Google has closed the television portion of its AdWords program, citing "video... increasingly going digital" as the reason.

Here’s an unexpected side effect of an increasing audience shift towards digital video in recent years: Sensing a change in the importance of television in the video space, Google is pulling back on its five-year-old Google TV Ads program, essentially bringing it to an end in order to focus on digital in the future.

In a blog post published yesterday, Google’s Shishir Mehrotra wrote that Google AdWords’ overall goal continues to be “to provide all our customers with the best digital marketing opportunities,” and that the Google TV Ads program launched in 2007 allowed a number of the company’s clients to buy “traditional TV advertising for the first time.”

Amongst the early partners with Google for the program were Hallmark Channel and the various cable channels owned by NBC Universal, both of whom were reportedly attracted to the deal by the possibility of Google’s client base managing to increase the number of local advertisers who would be available to the channels. However, it’s fair to say that the partnerships weren’t as effective as any party hoped, with NBC Universal actually ending its deal a year early in 2010.

In the official announcement of the closure of the service, Mehrotra explained that the company has noticed that “video is increasingly going digital and users are now watching across numerous devices,” meaning that the company has been forced to make “the hard decision to close our TV Ads product over the next few months and move the team to other areas at Google.” It may not be a complete shutdown, however; Mehrotra goes on to say that “of course we’ll continue to support our partners, and our clients’ campaigns, as we shut the project down,” which feels like a somewhat confusing statement – Surely, if the project is being shut down, the support will only be continued for a limited period…?

As for what the company will be doing to replace the TV component of AdWords, Mehrotra said that it would be more of what it’s currently up to. “We’ll be doubling down on video solutions for our clients (like YouTube, AdWords for Video, and ad serving tools for web video publishers),” he wrote, adding that the AdWords team “also see[s] opportunities to help users access web content on their TV screens, through products like Google TV.” So, not a complete dismissal of the possibilities offered by television, then, just a refocusing of what those possibilities may be, and where they lie.

“The future of video advertising is extremely bright and we’re excited to devote ourselves fully to it,” the blog entry ends. It remains to be seen whether or not the future of web-enabled televisions will be bright enough to replace the potential income loss from the closure of this project, of course.

Chinese dissident Wang Xiaoning freed 10 years after being convicted on Yahoo info

Understanding the Great Firewall of China

Activist Wang Xiaoning spent 10 years in a Chinese prison on the basis of information turned over by Yahoo. Has the West learned anything?

On Friday, Chinese political dissident Wang Xiaoning was released from prison, after serving a 10-year sentence for publishing controversial material and carrying on political discussions via his Yahoo email account. At the time, Wang Xiaoning’s conviction represented the longest sentence ever handed down for “inciting subversion of state power,” a vague charge that enables Chinese authorities to bring criminal actions against anyone speaking out against the government — for instance, by discussing human rights or calling for democratic reforms.

Wang Xiaoning was convicted largely on the basis of information turned over to Chinese authorities by the American Internet giant Yahoo. Information supplied by Yahoo also played a role in jailing several other Chinese dissidents.

China represents the world’s largest Internet market, with an estimated 540 million Chinese Internet users. Western companies face a paradox operating in China: They cannot ignore it; but by participating in the Chinese market, they also run the risk of supporting a regime that suppresses human rights and will throw people in prison for a decade on the basis of what they say online.

Has the West learned anything from Wang Xiaoning and others who have been jailed for exercising their freedom of speech online?

Who is Wang Xiaoning?

Wang Xiaoning Yu Ling 1970s

Wang Xiaoning is originally from China’s northeast Liaoning province, and used to be an engineer in China’s enormous weapons industry. Wang had a long history of pro-democracy activity and protest against China’s single-party state: He was detained by authorities in the crackdown following the 1989 massacre of protesters in Tiananmen Square, and for years was viewed by Chinese authorities as a subversive figure promoting disunity. Nonetheless, Wang continued to advocate for a multi-party system in China, and played a significant role in founding a fledgling political party — the China Third Way Party, a reference to China’s official “One country, two systems” policy. Former Chinese leader Deng Xoaoping advocated this stance in regard to incorporating capitalist regions like Macau, Hong Kong, and even Taiwan.

In 2000 and 2001, as part of his efforts to promote democracy and civil rights in China, Wang edited and posted to Yahoo forums electronic journals calling for democratic reform and separation of powers; Wang also distributed pro-democracy materials via email and corresponded with the leader of an overseas political party . Aware that Chinese authorities would take a dim view of his activities, Wang posted much of the material using false names.

On September 1, 2002, Chinese authorities arrested Wang Xiaoning at his home. Wang was accused of “inciting subversion of state power” — a lesser charge than actual subversion of state power, but still a serious offense.

A year later, Wang was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Although other prisoners had been sentenced to terms of up to eight years under the same charges, Wang’s sentence represented the first time a 10-year sentence had been handed down. Wang’s sentence has since been matched by sentences given to democracy activists like Liu Xianbin and Shi Tao, and exceeded only by the 11-year sentence imposed on 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo.

Wang had never engaged in violent protest, nor in any acts of sabotage, fraud, or malfeasance. Unlike Shi Tao, Wang was never accused of revealing state secrets. Wang was, in essence, convicted of writing. Wang never contested the facts alleged by the prosecution, but maintained that they did not constitute inciting subversion.

Beijing Municipal No. 2 Prison

prison

Wang served his sentence in Beijing Municipal No. 2 Prison, a facility where the Chinese government has detained several other political dissidents, including journalist Yang Zili, geologist and writer Jin Haike, Democracy Wall veterans Gao Hongming and Zha Jianguo, and Tiananmen Square activist Yang Jianli, among many others.

Fellow prisoner and Democracy Wall movement member He Depu has written of his interactions with Wang Xiaoning while in prison (Chinese). The essay paints a picture of a frail man who struggled to keep his strength up on sub-standard prison food (and was perpetually assigned to the “Sick Team,” a work crew for the infirm). Wang reportedly spent every night into a top bunk so he could read by the dim 20-watt bulb kept on 24/7 in every cell; Wang also refused to participate in the prison’s contraband economy or take advantage of official opportunities to spend his own money in exchange for better food, outside medicine, or most other amenities. He even declined to take advantage of increased official spending allowances for ill prisoners.

Wang Xiaoning also staunchly refused to confess his guilt in exchange for a reduced sentence. According to He Depu, prisoners who admitted their guilt and committed to a reform program could have their sentences reduced by up to one year for every year served, meaning Wang could conceivably have cut his prison time in half if he admitted he was guilty and participated in a points system to shave time off his sentence. According to He Depu, writers like Wang were considered valuable by the prison administrators: They could use their skills to write propaganda for the prison, dissuade budding activists and dissidents from protesting against the Chinese state.

Wang maintained his innocence.

Yahoo’s role and settlement

fundador Yahoo Jerry Yang

Wang Xiaoning was convicted almost entirely on the basis of information turned over to Chinese authorities by Yahoo’s wholly-owned Hong Kong subsidiary. The data connected the messages with Wang Xiaoning’s computer and identified Wang Xiaoning as the owner of the Yahoo account used to disseminate pro-democracy materials and a “large” number of email messages.

Yahoo China also turned over information regarding activists Jiang Lijun (arrested in 2002 and sentenced to four years) and Li Zhi (arrested in 2003 and sentenced to eight years). In 2004, Yahoo Hong Kong gave Chinese authorities identifying information for the journalist Shi Tao, who had used his personal Yahoo email account to describe an order from Chinese authorities that news media not report anything having to do with the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Falun Gong movement, or any calls for political change. When Yahoo turned over the information, Chinese authorities arrested Shi Tao and seized his computer. Unlike Wang Xiaoning, Shi Tao was accused of revealing state secrets; however, like Wang Xiaoning, he was also sentenced to 10 years in prison, to be followed by a two-year suspension of political rights.

Yahoo’s Hong Kong subsidiary never asked why the Chinese government wanted the information about its users, nor did it question the legality of the demands, despite the fact it had good reason to know why the Chinese government was requesting the information. Yahoo simply handed it over. These actions — or lack of action — led to organizations like Reporters Without Borders accusing Yahoo of effectively working as a police informant.

It’s worth noting that Yahoo is hardly alone: Google and Microsoft (through its MSN service) have also been accused of providing information to Chinese authorities that has been used to bring charges against pro-democracy activists. Google has since shifted its operations out of mainland China to Hong Kong and moved servers out of Chinese jurisdiction so requests for information become a matter a international law; Google also shifted its Internet search operation to Hong Kong so it would not have to comply with Chinese censorship requirements.

In February 2006, Yahoo was called to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee over its Hong Kong subsidiary’s disclosure of account and user information to Chinese authorities. At the time, Yahoo testified that, when it received the requests, it had no information about the nature of the Chinese investigation.

Nonetheless, in August 2007 the World Organization for Human Rights USA sued Yahoo in the United States on behalf of Shi Tao and Wang Xiaoning. As litigation proceeded, documents came to light that Beijing State Security Bureau had told Yahoo China, in its demand for information about Shi Tao, that it was conducting an investigation into leaked state secrets.

In November 2007, the House Foreign Affairs Committee chastised Yahoo for being “at best inexcusably negligent” in its conduct. Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang and general counsel Michael Callahan publicly apologized to the families of Shi Tao and Wang Xiaoning, who had travelled from China to attend the committee meeting.

A week later, Yahoo reached a financial settlement with both families. The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

What now?

china cell phone tracking

Jiang Lijun was freed in November, 2006; Li Zhi was released in November 2009. Shi Tao is still in prison.

Wang Xiaoning is now 62 years old. His wife, Yu Ling, told the BBC her husband was in “good health and fine spirits.”

Although Wang is now out of prison and at home with his family, in many ways he has merely stepped from a small prison to a larger one. While he was in prison his family was subject to continued surveillance and harassment by Chinese authorities, and there’s no reason to believe that attention will cease now that Wang is home. In addition, Wang will be deprived of his political rights for two more years: That means he cannot speak to the media or comment on his experience in prison.

Cases like Wang Xiaoning’s highlight the dilemmas faced by U.S. Internet firms seeking to do business in China. On one hand, China is the world’s largest Internet market, and the country is on the way to being a true superpower — if it’s not one already. China’s economy is a major force in geopolitics, and that economic growth is fueling a new middle class with a demonstrated appetite for digital and Internet technology. Although other world markets cannot be ignored, it’s increasingly difficult for technology companies to position themselves as global leaders without a major presence in China.

Companies like Microsoft and Yahoo have defended their actions by noting — appropriately — that doing business in any market means complying with local laws. Just because a company might be headquartered in the United States (or the U.K., or Australia, or Brazil), that doesn’t give them carte blanche to selectively ignore Chinese laws they don’t agree with while doing business in China.

It’s just that, in China’s case, that can mean being required to turn over information that may be used to prosecute and imprison Chinese citizens exercising what, in the West, is considered a fundamental right: free speech.

Smooth Moves: Fable: The Journey preview

fable kinect

A demo session with a feature complete version of Fable: The Journey shows that there's great potential in the Kinect adventure.

I’ll give you the same disclosure I gave Fable: The Journey creative director Gary Carr: I have never played a full Kinect game. I messed around with the early Project Natal demos back in 2009, but an actual, finished Kinect game? Never done it. I tell you this so you know that I went into my demo of Fable: The Journey last week with no expectations whatsoever.

Was I skeptical that an adventure game like Fable was suited to hands-free motion control and guided levels rather than free-roaming exploration? Definitely. Am I still skeptical? Sure. Is The Journey entertaining even in just a quick demo? Absolutely.

To catch you up, The Journey picks up 50 years after Fable III. Despite your revolutionary efforts in that game, Albion looks just as medieval and goblin-infested (or hob-infested as the case may be). This time around you play as Gabriel, one of the Dwellers, Albion’s fantasy version of the Romani people. Since he’s a fantasy gypsy, Gabriel doesn’t have the inherent magical skills that the fated heroes of past Fable games do. After getting separated from his family and swept up in immortal sorceress Theresa’s goings on, Gabriel receives a pair of magic gloves that let him toss all kinds of magic.

A swift tutorial through an ice and crystal covered cave introduces you to Gabe’s powers. It works like this: Raising your right hand and pushing forward will toss an energy ball. If you flick your right hand after throwing it, the ball will automatically whiplash and hit the nearest enemy. If you hold your right hand in place waving it back and forth, your energy ball becomes a much stronger fireball. Holding your right hand at your shoulder still will conjure an even more powerful spear to throw.

Raising your left hand and pushing will let you Obi Wan Kenobi it up and force push bad guys away. Holding your left arm out connects a magical tether to enemies letting you toss them around. This brings some nuance into fights. When you’re fighting against a bunch of skeleton warriors, the quickest route to victory is tethering them and popping off their limbs one by one. You can also block by holding your left arm up in front of you, natural as a shield. Dodging is just a matter of leaning right and left.

If that sounds like a lot to remember, it is, especially when a large group of enemies is bearing down on you. The Journey is best described as a cross between an old-fashioned lightgun game like Virtua Cop and a fighting game like Street Fighter. You have to pay attention to the environment directly in front of you while assessing what of your limited moves will best help you overcome your enemies. Both those styles of games require precision and quick decision making though.

Lionshead’s game impressively allows for both. When the moves didn’t work in the game it was almost always because I was rushing and not being specific with my motions. The Journey also allows for decent improvisation. The second level I played through was a mine where an enormous rock monster boss was waiting at the end. As you fought him, deflecting back giant rocks and tossing fire, skeletons would pop and advance. What do you do? Should I dodge to the far right and focus on the boss, or can I move fast enough to dismember these undead goons while also tossing boulders back at the boss? This sort of blend of physical challenge with classic video game problem solving delivers on that early promise of the Kinect.

At least in this sliver of the game. Carr told me during our demo that the game is 10 to 15 hours long. I played for a mere 20 minutes. The on-rails lightgun shooters and fighting games I compared The Journey to are brief games, played in short burst sessions, but Lionhead wants this to be a lengthy, deep adventure. It’s impossible to say how it stacks up in that regard based on this sample.

Is it funny like Fable? Couldn’t tell you. How’s the art? All I saw was a mine and a magic ice cavern. Throw in a forest and it would be every fantasy game ever. Does the action continue evolving or is it just a game of push and pull for 20 hours? Carr promised exploration areas but none were demoed.

Fable: The Journey was an impressive first experience with a complete Kinect game, but it has many questions to answer before it releases in October.

Google Nexus 7 – A Review

It has been a smart move. For Android fans that were looking for a 7-inch tablet would have a real hard time in looking for something better than Google Nexus 7. The tablet offers a fantastic combination of 7 inch form factor and quad-core Tegra 3 processor with a RAM of 1GB. It is light, thin and portable. The tablet comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, solid build quality and a highly appealing design.  Comfort, speed, graphics, and most importantly the price gain the highest points.

Exterior

Google Nexus 7 has a size of 198.5mm wide x 120mm x 0.45mm thick and weighs around 340g. It has a screen of 7” 1280×800 HD display, scratch resistant corning glass, and back-lit IPS display and 1.2MP front facing camera. It’s hard to comprehend how small this tablet is until you hold it. Being extremely petite, the screen is 20mm at the top and bottom and 14mm on all sides.  The pockmarked back makes it quite nice and firm to hold. The back of the tablet is devoid of camera. The screen-touch response has been highly improved and stands better than the previous Android versions. The tab has a TFT touch-screen with active matrix.

This Google’s product is perfectly sized for e-book readers and of course for players of Android games. This tab from Google was designed keeping the gaming thing in mind. Users can tap over 600,000 games and apps available on Google Play. The dimensions are very similar to those of a paperback book.  The IPS screen (LED back-lit) has 1,280 by 800 pixels resolution (216 pixel/inch ppi). Images are clear and sharp. The tablet has a gorilla glass front and an easy-to-grip, soft-touch, stippled back. The silver metal frame joins the back and the front. This Google’s tablet might be made of glass and plastic but it surely does not look cheap.

Interior

The Nexus 7 has a memory of 1 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage with a CPU of Quadra-core Tegra 3 Processor. With 10 hours of e-reading and web-browsing, 300 hours of standby and 9 hours of HD playback, the tablet’s battery life needs a special mention. Nexus 7 charges with a connection of micro-USB. The standard battery life of 4325 mAh gives a back-up power to ensure the user gets all tasks done. There are two versions of the product available, one with 16GB internal storage and the other with 8GB internal storage.

The new tablet comes with a Tegra 3, NVIDIA quad-core processor and is built by Asus. This means the user can experience everything faster. The product has a 12-core GPU and gameplay is responsive and smooth. It is powered by the world’s most popular platform Android 4.1, Jelly Bean. Users can also experience home screen customization, all-new widgets and smarter notifications. It has a 802.11 b/g/n WLAN Wi-Fi.

Features

The best of Google has come alive with Nexus 7 tablet. All of a user’s favourite Google apps from YouTube and Google+ to Chrome and gmail are available in the palm of the hands. Magazines, e-books, music, games, each user will have something in store for them. The tablet has GPS capability and Bluetooth along with NFC. The features also include sensors, microphone, speakers, in-built Google Chrome, and YouTube in HD.

With the stunning features, Google Nexus 7 is sure to revolutionize computing experience. Easy, light-weight, attractive, flanked by high-performance processor and memory Google Nexus 7 will change your life forever. Thanks to Asus, the built quality and hardware designs are excellent. Its affordable price has also made this recent Google tablet the most sought after in the tablet market today.

God Of War movie writers explain the film’s concept

God Of War II

God Of War is eventually coming to the silver screen, and apparently it's going to be a bit like Batman Begins.

In case you weren’t aware, there’s a movie in the earliest stages of production based on Sony’s God Of War video game series. Assuming you haven’t been dead for the last half-decade this shouldn’t come as much surprise to you since, well, God Of War is a successful game franchise so of course someone would want to turn it into a movie. That’s how Hollywood works now, whether we like it or not.

As our cynical grumbling won’t do anything to make the eventual film more palatable, and it’s far too early to reasonably speculate on this thing’s potential, we were happy to see that the lovely people over at JoBlo had recently conducted an interview with Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the two men tapped to write the script for the God Of War movie. Perhaps the duo might be able to offer some reassurance as they explain how they’re adapting the story seen in Sony’s games for theaters:

In the same way that Batman was grounded with Christopher Nolan’s rendition, we were attempting to do that with Kratos so that when we meet him — like they’re doing in this newest game, which is sort of a prequel to the original — we’re seeing him before he became the Ghost of Sparta, when he was just a Spartan warrior and he had family and kids.”

In the game … there’s that attack from the barbarians and Kratos has to call upon Ares to help him. Really, that’s going to be our first act break. Before then, he’s going to be mortal, and he’s going to have his family. We’re going to learn about him and understand how he operates. So it’s potentially 30 minutes — give or take — of building up this character so that, when he does turn and becomes the Ghost of Sparta, we understand him as a human and we understand the journey that he’s going to take. We’re emotionally invested, so that it could go beyond just this one movie.

Alright, that seems a bit derivative, but then again it worked quite nicely in Batman Begins and it’s not like we had any preconceived notions about how amazingly well Chrisopher Nolan could capture the spirit of DC Comics’ Batman books before that film hit theaters. For all we know Dunstan and Melton’s script could be phenomenal and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of Kratos and his violent, tragic background.

Actually, given the rest of the interview, we’re growing warily optimistic about this project. Following the above quote the two men are asked about the characterization of Kratos in the movie and spend quite a while explaining how the producers behind the flick have repeatedly stressed the idea that though God Of War will certainly be an action flick full of spectacular violence and bombastic CGI, they want Kratos to be both tough-as-nails and exhibit a very human vulnerability and complex set of motivations. Specifically, they’d like to avoid the trap many recent action movies have fallen into where the lead characters are so invulnerably awesome that all possible tension is drained right out of the film. By definition it’s very difficult for the average person to relate to a literal superhuman, so Dunstan and Melton are trying to instill the theatrical Kratos with a “softer side,” for lack of a better word.

It’s a great interview, and you really should read the thing in its entirety. Not only because it might make you a bit less worried about this project, but also because I want every one of you to spend the rest of the day imagining how a screenwriter might possibly balance emotionally resonant empathy with a character who is so unflinchingly violent that he needed no alterations whatsoever to fit in alongside the cast of the most recent Mortal Kombat sequel.

You really should be watching PBS’ Idea Channel

Idea Channel -- William Gibson

As long as you're going to waste time on YouTube anyway, why not watch something genuinely good? Something like PBS' Idea Channel.

In the interest of full disclosure, we will cop to the fact that today is a very slow news day. Normally that would make the remainder of the afternoon intensely boring, but instead of struggling to convince you readers that an otherwise inconsequential story is actually crucial information, we’re opting to instead introduce you to something cool that you may not be aware of.

Specifically, today’s focus is on a relatively recently launched YouTube channel from America’s Public Broadcasting Service dubbed the “Idea Channel.” Instead of regurgitating PBS’ oft-stuffy televisual content onto the ‘net or periodically posting kittens in vaguely science-related situations, the Idea Channel contains numerous vignettes that explore deceptively simple topics in a way that is both thought-provoking and cleverly crafted to appeal to the modern sensibilities and waning attention spans of today’s always-connected ‘net denizens.

To wit: At the bottom of this post we’ve embedded the Idea Channel’s latest offering, a video that asks the question “Is William Gibson a modern day oracle?” Gibson’s fans should already know where this is going: In the course of his literary career William Gibson has predicted, in great detail, an amazing number of technologies that we see as relatively commonplace today. Second Life, the modern Internet, reality TV, that hologram Tupac that performed at Coachella; you can find eerily prescient references to each of these ideas in Gibson’s work — and even more impressively Gibson has regularly managed to dream up these technologies more than a decade before flesh and blood humans can even think of making them a reality.

On the other hand, maybe seminal cyberpunk authors aren’t really up your alley. Maybe you’re more interested in video games. In that case have a look at the Idea Channel’s debut video which posits the idea that “Super Mario Bros. is the world’s greatest piece of surrealist art.” Or, say your interests run toward Internet culture itself. In that case, we’d highly recommend this clip which explores the possibility that modern, online memetic humor might be creating a “cultural singularity.”

The bottom line is that PBS’ Idea Channel is not just another diversion dropped into a sea of momentarily interesting Internet offerings all designed to help a person kill time. Instead, it provides simple, yet profound ideas that should inspire further thought and discussion amongst its viewers. Even more impressively however, is how well PBS has adapted this content to its prospective audience. While watching these clips keep in mind that this footage comes from the same group that is best known for highbrow, culturally significant TV shows like Downton Abbey. The contrast between these clips and the aforementioned BBC drama is undeniable, but it should be seen as a endorsement of the clever people working behind the scenes at PBS that the broadcaster is able to seamlessly switch gears between historical melodrama and a video that wonders if LOLcats are an important modern artform. Propers to PBS for demonstrating such range, and most crucially, for keeping us all entertained on a dull Friday afternoon.

Valve’s Steam Greenlight crowd-funding service opened, flooded with fake games

valve bans steam members

Steam Greenlight didn't have the best first day as Valve is forced to ban people posting fake, racist, and copycat projects.

Valve is many things in addition to being a video game maker. It’s savvy, in business and in design. It’s optimistic. It’s also woefully naïve.

When the company announced it would open Steam Greenlight in July, it seemed to believe that people using the service would be reasonable, driven creators looking to grow legitimate projects. “Developers post information, screenshots, and videos for their game and seek a critical mass of community support,” was how Valve described Greenlight. It would be a video game-focused, Kickstarter-style crowd support tool built right into Steam for established game playing audience of 54 million. The utopian vision of a creator-fueled gaming market was here, free of the need to pledge cold cash up front!

Valve forgot the golden rule in creating Greenlight, though: People are jerks.

Within hours of Steam Greenlight opening on Friday, the service was flooded with fake projects, copycats of existing titles, and deeply offensive projects. The first day of Valve’s utopian business model turned into an Internet troll holiday.

Steam user Satoru said on Friday morning that within the span of a single hour, he’d seen Left 4 Dead 3, five versions of Half-Life 3, two versions of Mass Effect 3, every Need For Speed game made, Command & Conquer, and Condemned sitting alongside racist games targeting black Americans as well as Indians. He also spotted a 9/11 game called Best WTC Plane Simulator.

Valve’s doing the only thing it can: Banning users en masse. Anyone caught creating bum Steam Greenlight projects will be blocked from Steam community services for one week.

As of this writing, the Greenlight homepage has been cleared of some detritus. When Eurogamer reported on the problem early on Friday, there were games in the running that were just pictures of Russian kids. Now there are only a handful of rip-offs like an entry for La Mulana.

The question: As more businesses look to introduce community support services like Greenlight, will those businesses have to police those services as a rule? Can people really not be relief on to behave themselves?

Apple scam alert: Phishers looking to hook your Apple ID

Apple scam alert phishing email

Apple users have begun receiving phishing scam emails. Here's what you need to know to avoid becoming a victim.

Apple customers, beware. A new round of phishing attacks have begun landing in Apple users’ inboxes. While all the tell-tale signs of a scam are there, the busy, absent-minded, or otherwise unobservant among us could easy fall victim to this nefarious attempt to snag your Apple ID credentials, and all the financial information that goes along with it.

The e-mail reads:

“Your Apple ID has been temporarily Locked! We detect unauthorized Login Attempts to your Apple ID from other IP Address. Please re-confirm your identity today or your account will be Locked due to concerns we have for the safety and integrity of the Apple Community.”

The e-mail then provides a “Confirm Your Identity” button, which, of course, leads you to a phishing site rife with identity-grabbing malware.

Now, those of us who know Apple better than we know ourselves can easily see that this is a scam. Why? Because Apple would never just randomly capitalize words like “Locked” and “Login Attempts” or “Address.” It wouldn’t use exclamation points. It also wouldn’t send out e-mails to customers with poorly written sentences like, “We detect unauthorized Login Attempts to your Apple ID from other IP Address,” which was clearly crafted by someone with a slippery grip on the English language.

Look further and you’ll see that the “Confirm Your Identity” button leads you to: http://app2.apple.spabythesea.com.au/?/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/. (WARNING: Do not visit that link!) Now, this URL does have a number of similarities with legitimate Apple URLs. But as you can see, this is an Australian domain, with the name “Spa By The Sea” — clearly not an Apple Web property.

So there you have it, folks. If you get an e-mail saying that your Apple ID has been “locked,” don’t click on any of the links, or provide the e-mail’s sender with any of your personal information. If you are still worried you account has actually been locked, simply head over to Apple’s My Apple ID site, where you can login, reset your password, and check that your credentials are safe and sound.

EA: Frostbite Engine powers “3 to 5 IPs” for Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4

madden xbox 720

Electronic Arts' Frank Gibeau says that proprietary technology like the Frostbite Engine will help his company not repeat past mistakes.

Electronic Arts may have reached its financial nadir. Stock in the Madden NFL 13 publisher is trading above $13 as of this writing, up from this year’s 14-year low beneath $11, but still down more than 50 percent from where it started the calendar year. This is during a period when some of EA’s most profitable properties are still showing growth. Madden NFL 13 sold 900,000 copies in its first day on shelves, a 7 percent boost over 2011. Who says that EA’s audience has reached its saturation point?

As EA has watched its market cap plummet from more than $18 billion at the end of 2007 to just over $4 billion today, it has spent gobs of capital trying to recover. It’s spent billions developing new intellectual property that failed (Mirror’s Edge), excellent games with outdated business models (Star Wars: The Old Republic), and it’s acquired dozens of studios in a bid to diversify (PopCap). Digital revenue’s grown, mobile revenue has grown, even EA’s console game business has stayed steady but none of it’s been enough.

Free-to-play games and cross-platform play are two pillars in EA’s plans for the future. A tripod is more stable though, so what will be EA’s third leg? Proprietary engine technology according to EA labels chief Frank Gibeau. Rather than spend huge sums on developing new technology for each game or licensing engines like Crytek’s CryEngine or Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, EA’s Dice-developed Frostbite engine will be the money-saving, revenue-generating machine that EA has lacked in the last console generation.

“[Frostbite] is tailor made for next-gen hardware, so we’re in really good shape from a technology standpoint, which is where we had our misstep last time,” Gibeau told Bloomberg (via Gamasutra) in a new interview.

When John Riccitiello took over as Electronic Arts CEO at the beginning of this console cycle, he emphasized the creation of new intellectual property as the key to success. The failure of games like Dante’s Inferno, Bulletstorm and Mirror’s Edge as well as the middling success of others like Dead Space and Army of Two has led some to say that EA’s pursuit of success through AAA IP is a losing strategy.

Gibeau says that Frostbite will allow EA to more carefully invest in new IP. “We’ve already started 3 to 5 IPs that we’re going to launch in those first 24 months of the next generation. EA Sports is there with all of its power, and you also see some really big brands like Battlefield coming out.”

EA appears to have covered its bases. Gamers should brace for a future where they pay for EA games in small, constant increments. EA’s shareholders should expect a turn around, if not a return to the glory days, because of that change.

Samsung Galaxy Camera extended hands-on

Today we got the chance to sit down with Samsung’s team and have a more thorough look at its recently announced products.

First off, it was the Samsung Galaxy Camera. We tried it first-hand without the messy wires and we’re quite happy with how it felt. It has 21x optical zoom and at its widest end, the lens has an ultra wide angle of 23mm in 35mm terms. Behind it there is a back-lit sensor, which is impressive enough, even without counting the Android smart functionality.

The Samsung Galaxy Camera

There is a SIM slot that you can use for using a 3G data connection on the go. The standard 2.5 mm audio jack not only allows audio output, but you can also use it with a headset with a mic and even do a Skype chat on it (sorry no video chats).

According to CIPA guidelines, the Galaxy Camera is rated at 280 shots, while according to Samsung’s own method of testing, the Galaxy camera should last up to 6 hours of continuous usage – and that includes everything – browsing web sites, watching movies, taking photos and whatnot.

The camcorder has a neat feature that allows you to pause the capturing during recording. You can also snap stills during video recording without interrupting the footage, but only in 5MP resolution.

As for software support, Instagram comes preinstalled. Most other Android camera apps should work well too, but they don’t support the optical zoom functionality and the advanced options available in the stock camera interface. Samsung is working with developers to optimize their apps for the Galaxy camera. All optimized camera apps will be easy to access from Samsung’s own app repository.

Samsung has a deal with Dropbox, so every Galaxy Camera user gets 50GB of free cloud storage.

Some interesting features of the stock camera interface include the ability to stream what your camera “sees” in standby to your friends via the ChatOn service. Another neat feature allows you to control remotely the Galaxy Camera with your smartphone or tablet – you can operate the optical zoom, snap shots or download images. You can have the Galaxy camera share your photos automatically with your friends or on your favorite social media services.
