Sony releases Android 4.4.1 KitKat AOSP source for several devices

Sony maintains AOSP releases – that’s clean, unmodified Android – for a number of its phones. The latest batch that was released on GitHub is for the latest version of Android, version 4.4.1 KitKat.

The list of devices that have official builds includes the Sony Xperia Z and ZL phones plus the Xperia Tablet Z, which received Android 4.3 AOSP earlier this year.

New additions include the Xperia L, a mid-range phone, and the Xperia S, which came out in February of last year. It’s impressive that Sony was able to push such an old device to the very latest Android OS version when even certain Nexus phones won’t get it.

Interestingly, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, which recently gained a spot among the Google Play Edition devices, is not on the list.

Anyway, the company has released the open source code, the binary blobs for proprietary things (device drivers and such) along with build details. Note that these are the early days and some features might not work properly, which makes it unsuitable for a daily driver to casual users.

Still, this is a boon for custom ROM makers who are trying to bring the latest candy version of Android to users.
