Got $22k? LG 84-inch 4K TV hits Korean shelves, arrives in US next month

That monstrous LG 84-inch 4K  (or Ultra Definition) 3D TV we saw at CES earlier this year has crawled out of its prototype chrysalis and is now flying onto Korean store’s shelves, with North American release slated for sometime in September. 

There are a lot of big numbers to digest with this behemoth. If 84-inches of diagonal viewing area isn’t enough, dig into the 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution (that’s four times the resolution of 1080p HDTV). And if you’re still hungry, feast your brain on the price:  25 million won or about $22,000. That’s about $15,000 more than Sharp’s 70-inch Elite Pro, folks. Wow. 

From what we saw at CES, LG’s latest does look pretty amazing — even when it isn’t being fed 4K content. As of now, the only 4K media to be found is on YouTube but, as we learned at CES, the LG 84LM9600 does a pretty snazzy job of upconverting standard 1080p content as well. Whenever 4K content manages to jump over present technological standards hurdles and make its way to the masses, we have no doubt that this TV will display it well. Plus, 3D images should look better than ever since LG’s passive 3D system, combined with this higher resolution TV, will now deliver a proper HD image in 3D. 

The next stop for the 84-incher is the IFA show in Germany, followed by an unveiling set to coincide with the CEDIA Expo held in Indianapolis this year, where we’ll get some hands-on time with the big display.
