Facebook to take on Craigslist with classifieds plan, report claims

money-facebook

Facebook is set to challenge the king of online classifieds Craigslist with the launch of its own service, a report claims.

In an effort to find new revenue streams, Facebook is reportedly looking at the possibility of launching a classified ads service that may give Craigslist a run for its money.

The service would offer a mix of paid and free ads and include items for sale, apartment rentals and job vacancies, among other things.

A report by The Daily says “two sources within Facebook” claim the service will be called Marketplace, the same name given to a similar project launched by Facebook five years ago and which is now operated by Oodle.

Whereas Craigslist functions as a noticeboard that sits on the Web waiting for people to come and explore it, Facebook’s Marketplace would target members of its enormous site according to information in their profiles, posting ads in friends’ news feeds – similar to the way in which the promoted posts feature works.

For example, if you wanted to advertise a room in a particular location, you could tag friends who you think might be interested, with only those in the area receiving the ad – they could, however, share it with others if they knew someone who they thought could be interested.

While room ads are likely to be free, selling items will require a small fee – expected to be under $5 – with the ad appearing in friends’ feeds.

With job ads, a vacancy requiring a particular degree would end up in the feed only of those people with that specific qualification, while a ‘projects’ section would allow users to share tips and information on a range of subjects. “It’s possible the next generation of startups could be formed within this section,” The Daily suggests optimistically.

Whether such a service will pose any kind of threat to Craigslist remains to be seen, though with the well-established and popular classifieds site open to all, it should have little trouble in maintaining at the very least a decent chunk of its massive user base. Facebook, meanwhile, will be hoping it can use its Marketplace service to generate some much-needed revenue from its 552 million users.

While a launch date for the service appears not to have been set, The Daily’s sources claim it is being fast-tracked for launch.

Signature looks: the HTC Windows Phone 8X pays us a visit

The HTC Windows Phone 8X has hit our office and we are rushing to bring you a short hands-on of the smarphone, complete with some live photos and a hands-on video.

It’s HTC’s flagship Windows Phone device and comes with the latest version of the Microsoft mobile platform, WP8, a Beats Audio amplifier inside, two wide-angle cameras on board, a gorgeous screen and a dual-core Krait processor.

Things are running as smooth as butter on the software side, which is in keeping with Windows Phone’s reputation since day one.

Windows Phone 8 brings an array of new features and the Windows Phone 8X takes full advantage of them all.

There’s improved SkyDrive integration, resizeable live tiles, new Xbox Live features like Music, DivX/XviD video support and others.

The design of the HTC Windows Phone 8X is very comfortable for one handed operation. The smartphone has tapered edges and looks pretty slim at first, but you quickly realize that thickness builds up towards the center of the device.

However we’re not big fans of the bezels around the screen, especially above and below it. The Windows Phone 8X is virtually the same size as a One X, despite offering a far smaller 4.3″ display (vs 4.7″).

BlackBerry 10 phones being tested by carriers as Pentagon says it will keep using RIM handsets

Research In Motion boss Thorsten Heins has announced that devices running the firm's next-generation OS, BlackBerry 10, are now being tested by carriers around the world, keeping it on course for release early next year. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has said it will continue to use BlackBerry devices in its work.

It’s encouraging. It’s a step in the right direction. It might mean Research In Motion (RIM) really will fulfill its promise of a first-quarter 2013 launch of its next-generation BlackBerry 10 OS and handsets.

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins announced in a statement on Wednesday that handsets running the new OS were now being tested by more than 50 carriers worldwide.

Heins said reaching the testing phase meant the company had “passed a critical milestone” in the development of its new mobile computing platform.

“The hard work will not stop here as we build towards launch,” Heins said in the statement, adding, “Our developer teams are continuing to generate momentum to bring a wealth of applications to BlackBerry 10, our enterprise teams have started to present BlackBerry 10 devices and services to our business customers, and our engineers are fully mobilized to ensure that BlackBerry 10 launches flawlessly in the first quarter of 2013.”

In an interview with the BBC last week, Heins urged consumers not to underestimate “the dynamic [BlackBerry 10] is going to create in the market.”

In other news involving the mobile company, the Pentagon made clear this week that it would carry on supporting “large numbers” of BlackBerry handsets despite going ahead with plans to allow the US military to use other devices such as the iPhone.

“The Defense Information Systems Agency is managing an enterprise email capability that continues to support large numbers of RIM devices,” a spokesman told Reuters this week. A number of government agencies and businesses have said in the last year they would be issuing staff with iOS or Android devices, ending long-standing contracts with BlackBerry. While the Pentagon also appears to be relaxing its association with RIM, things are so serious at the Canadian company that the defense agency’s announcement that it’s not switching entirely to rival devices will actually be perceived as good news by many.

The BlackBerry was once the phone of choice for many agencies and firms thanks largely to its strong security features. However, security on rival handsets such as Apple’s iPhone and a number of Android-powered devices has improved over time, offering an alternative to the BlackBerry.

The launch of RIM’s next-generation OS and handsets is its make-or-break moment. Perhaps the Canadian mobile maker – once the country’s most valuable company – can still turn things around, remain a viable player in the mobile game and consequently help to keep competitors on their toes.

T-Mobile and AT&T to Share Networks in Areas Impacted by Hurricane Sandy

Times of national disaster not only can bring together people, but also rival technology companies.

This afternoon, AT&T and T-Mobile have announced that they will be working together in the wake of Hurricane Sandy to provide more service and coverage in areas hit by the storm. The two cellular providers will share networks and roaming capabilities in New York and New Jersey, an AT&T spokesman told ABC News.

AT&T and T-Mobile customers will be able to place calls as they usually do. The calls just might be carried over a network they don’t subscribe to. For instance, T-Mobile customers in New York City who have had very little service during the storm aftermath will now be able to place calls over AT&T’s network.

In each case, calls will be carried over the most operational network in the area.

“This agreement is possible because AT&T and T-Mobile use the same underlying wireless network technology,” AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told ABC News. “Which network a customer is on will be completely transparent. The customer won’t even notice.”

There will be no extra costs to users, and no roaming fees or extra line items on bills.

Both AT&T and T-Mobile use the same GSM and UMTS network technology.

Verizon and Sprint use different technology, so they aren’t involved in this arrangement.

How and where to watch the NBA online

Watch NBA online sports basketball streaming

Today is the day that NBA fans have been waiting months for, the start of the 2012-2013 season. But for those that don’t have cable, or maybe those looking for more coverage they can take with them, we have you covered with our picks for the best sites to watch pro basketball online.

With the NBA’s regular season kicking off on tonight, it’s time to figure out how and/or where to watch your favorite NBA team. Below are some sites that offer live NBA action streamed to your laptop or to your tv without the need for that pesky cable bill. And it isn’t just cord cutters that can benefit from services like these. We have your back, poor, beleaguered Charlotte Bobcat fan living anywhere other than  North Carolina. These services allow you to watch any game, anywhere.

Most of these sites offer free streams as long as you are willing to put up with pop-ups and slightly lower quality, but a decent computer and a solid internet connection will have you well on your way.

NBA League Pass

NBA League PassIf you have to have it and you’ve got the dough, NBA league pass is the way to go. This is as close as you will get on your computer to the cable experience with the added, bonus of being able to watch the teams you want even when they you are on the road or games are blacked out. NBA league pass offers a few different plans for cable — broadband only, naturally — or mobile. Below are the options for broadband only.

  • PREMIUM: Watch all 30 teams throughout the regular season. 5 Installments of: $39.99
  • CHOICE:Choose up to 5 teams to watch throughout the regular season. 5 Installments of: $26.99
  • Live HD games, season archives, 4 games at once, live game stats

TNT Overtime

TNT OvertimeFree. The price is right but the view may not be. It’s something different, but the serious fan may be disappointed as some action can be missed due to the alternate camera angles. TNT only offers this service for select games so you won’t want to depend on it to catch your team every time. Overall it’s worth a look. Use this as a supplement to watching the game on TV or from one of the other sources below. After All, variety is the spice of life.

  • Mosaic view is like watching the game through a kaleidoscope and may cause seizures. Best viewed after drinking a six pack of your favorite energy drink.
  • Player cam is pretty cool to watch a single player move on the court even when they are not in possession of the ball or shooting. Mostly this is a novelty and won’t feed the need of the dedicated NBA fan. If your favorite player is not selected for the cam view you can vote for them and hope there are other stalkers…er, fans like yourself that are doing the same.
  • Backboard cam view is the closest view you can get to the traditional TV feel of the game. It will do in a pinch.
  • Action cam – wow…If you are prone to motion sickness you may want to skip this view. A Blair Witch camera style paired with the squeaking of dozens of size 14 sneakers is probably more than the average viewer can handle.

NBA Online FirstRowSports

first rowThe Best of the free! The streaming is solid, picture is clear, and you can find about any game you want. The trick to mastering this site is to figure out which close buttons to click in order to get to the window that will titillate your NBA itch into submission in the absence of the umbilical cord known as cable. Basically, just click on the little red close buttons until you see your beloved team, then click the expand button and enjoy. There will be pop-ups, but stick with it and its worth the annoyance.

myp2p

Myp2pIt ranks right up there with FirstRowSports. You can find the game you want and the stream will be fairly solid. Like any stream there may be pauses, pixelated screens, and/or you may not be able to find a link. They were down for a while, but seem to be back up and running strong.

Atdhe.eu

Atdhe.euThis site has been showing preseason games without issues. The stream has been smooth, but definitely not HD quality. I felt like Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom dodging booby trapped popups. Luckily ESET was watching my back and caught a couple where I sloppily clicked outside the teeny, tiny almost transparent close box. I don’t recommend trying this site if you are on a work computer or one that you might be afraid to get a virus on.

Sportshunter.eu

Sportshunter.euNot as sketchy as Atdhe.eu. Decent Quality of picture and stream. You’ll have to click through some ads to get to the proper window, then just click the expand button after closing popups. Not the best, but it will get the job done.

A word of caution. Many of the free streaming sites make money from ads and can also be host to a plethora of viruses, spyware, adware etc. Make sure you have your antivirus and spyware updated when using these sites. Use at your own risk.

Windows 8 laptop roundup: Traditional PCs get an upgrade

notable windows 8 devices microsoft tablets laptops

Windows 8 is enabling a buffet of innovative new laptops. These are our currently our favorite traditional laptops in the launch library of Windows 8 devices, which has grown quite large.

It will definitely take some getting used to — the hands-on nature of the OS already requires a bit of a brain rewire — but change should be exciting. This is the first time in a long time that Microsoft has drastically overhauled the aesthetics in Windows and it should be celebrated for it. Yes, it has its limitations and annoyances, but Microsoft is steadily rolling out updates and responding to customer feedback. There’s nowhere to go but up.

Windows 8 represents the start of a radical shift in the laptop market. Microsoft’s decision to re-design the Windows interface for use with touch should solve one of the most serious problems facing PC manufacturers interested in touchscreen devices – the lack of a decent interface.

No time has been wasted in the development of new products with new ideas. In fact, some of the products debuting with Windows 8 are concepts first shown nearly a year ago at CES 2012. Looking for a new notebook? We’ve rounded up the laptops that we think are most likely to interest consumers when the new operating system hits store shelves on October 26.

Acer Aspire M5Acer’s Aspire Timeline Ultra M5, one of our favorite Ultrabooks, is being updated for use with Windows 8. The update appears to almost wholly consist of a 10-point touchscreen. Most other components, and the chassis itself, appear largely untouched. We’re not opposed to that. We think the touchscreen model would be a good choice for anyone who wants some touchscreen functionality but intends to still rely primarily on the ole’ touchpad and keyboard. Acer’s priced the model accordingly – it will start at just $800.

Asus Taichi

Asus Taichi dualscreen laptop

The Taichi is one of the more bizarre concepts to debut alongside Windows 8. Unlike most convertibles, which turn into a tablet by sliding the display forward or flipping it around, the Taichi simply adds a second display to the top of the laptop. Open, it’s a laptop. Closed, it’s a tablet. It’s an interesting concept. Practical? That remains to be seen, but Asus is outfitting the 11.6-inch laptop with world-class hardware and seems intent on making it a flagship product. It’s powered by Intel Core processors, come with a solid state drive and both of the displays are 1080p. The expected introductory price will be $1,300.

HP Envy Spectre XT TouchSmart

HP has gone berserk on this 15-inch touchscreen laptop. It offers a 1080p IPS display, an Intel Core processor, a Thunderbolt port and, of course, a touchscreen. Unlike most of the other laptops listed here, the Spectre XT is clearly not meant for travel. Its weight of 4.7 pounds makes it the gorilla of the group despite its thin profile. Still, not everyone who buys a laptop needs portability and the hardware specs make it clear the XT will be a competitor for the performance crown among this pack.

HP Envy x2

Buyers looking for a small convertible in the Envy line will want to direct their gaze to the Envy x2. It’s an 11.6-inch dockable tablet that will be shipping with a 1366 x 768 pixel IPS display and weigh in at just 3.1 pounds. It also includes a solid state hard drive, a built-in NFC chip and support for a stylus. It does suffer from the same gotcha as the Asus Vivo Tab, however — an Intel Atom processor. This is made worse by rumors that it will have a price over $1,000 and perhaps as high as $1,400. We have a hard time believing than any Atom powered product would be worth a premium.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga

IdeaPad YogaThe Yoga is a concept that Lenovo showed at CES 2012 as a showcase for both ultrabooks and what might be possible with Windows 8. Its claim to fame is a unique hinge that makes it possible to swing the keyboard almost 360 degrees, which places the display on the “bottom” of the laptop. It then can be used as a tablet. The Yoga can also use the keyboard as a stand for the touchscreen. Lenovo will be shipping the Yoga with Intel Core processors, solid state drives and a 13-inch 1600 x 900 pixel IPS display. These are respectable specifications, and they become all the more enticing in light of a $1,000 starting price. We think this may end up among the most popular convertibles on the market.

Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch

Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch

The Samsung Series 5 Touch joins the Acer Aspire M5 as our pick for the everyman’s touchscreen laptop. We have not fully reviewed the Series 5, but we’re not oblivious to it. We think it a well-built, yet affordable, 13-inch Ultrabook. A touchscreen is of course included in the new model, as is a Core low-voltage processor and a mechanical hard drive paired with a solid state cache drive. It’s all conventional stuff, so it’s good that Samsung has barely touched the price. Base price starts at $800.

Conclusion

Our top pick going in to the launch of Windows 8 is the IdeaPad Yoga. This convertible touchscreen laptop offers a unique design, powerful hardware, impressive displays, and an affordable price tag. We haven’t had the chance to fully review any of these products, however, and we’ve had hands-on time with only some of them. Take this list as a collection of first impressions rather than final verdicts. Look for our full reviews on these laptops and more over the coming months.

Quora introduces Top Writers, drives attention – and rewards – to its most influential users

quora top writers

Quora continues to chart the knowledge graph with a nod to the most well-versed, influential writers using its platform. The Top Writer title includes special Quora perks, and should drive these users as well as Top Writer hopefuls to boost their activity on the site.

Influential Quora writers now have something to brag about — in addition to their Q&A prowess. Quora announced it’s introducing its Top Writers program, which publicly recognizes the cream of the crop of its users.

For the most part, the Top Writers program is simply social acknowledgement for those dedicated and eloquent users who Quora staffers believe to be “remarkable people with talent for communicating with expertise, knowledge, authenticity, and emphaty.” These people, as Quora explains it, are writers “with a talent for describing the human condition and the world around us.” It’s an achievement that could be more than just a meaningless title as Quora continues to gain platform legitimacy.

These Top Writer’s answers are more likely to appear at the top of search results on Google and Bing’s social sidebar. It’s noteworthy when you consider Quora’s 350 percent year over year growth, with Google accounting for as much as 50 percent of its traffic. With the platform’s hurried evolution into a dependable destination for answers, Quora’s Top Writers are sure to become influencers in their respective industries.

There are 492 users included at launch of the Top Writers program. These writers are in the “charter” class, according to Quora, meaning on average they’ve contributed 350 answers apiece. These writers come from 30 different countries and cover diverse topics, of which the top subjects include Movies, Food, Startups, Psychology, and U.S. Politics. The Top Writers full time occupations run the gamut, from neuroscience and healthcare to military and policemen, and even photographers and screenwriters. And as many as 10 percent of Quora’s Top Writers are students.

Each Top Writer will have a small icon, in the shape of a quill, added next to their name on their profile page to indicate their status. They’ll also be receiving a “welcome package” courtesy of Quora with a Top Writer 2012 t-shirt. In addition to this, Quora announced that the company was going to be hosting Top Writer-only meetups, which will include Quora swag, and a Top Writer community board for the latest updates and announcements.

There’s a whiff of elitism you may be picking up on here given all the special privileges these select upper echelon of users are receiving, but it’s a strategy that has worked successfully in the past. Yelp has been known to cater exclusive services to its handpicked and top reviewers, known as the Yelp Elite Squad. YouTube also helped grow its platform into an advertising hub thanks to its initial incentive with its YouTube Partner Program. Despite what could be seen as a controversial move, history has shown that a community oriented platform has benefited from a partnership or VIP program to motivate its top influencers as well as inspire to users to actively use the site.

Bugatti SuperVeyron to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next fall?

Bugatti SuperVeyron front three quarter view

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is already the world's fastest car, but Bugatti is reportedly upping the ante with a 1,600 hp, 288 mph version.

When you’ve got the fastest car in the world, it’s not exactly easy to improve it. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 already has 16 cylinders, 1,184 horsepower, and a record-holding top speed of 267 mph (production cars are limited to 258 mph), so what else is there to do?

Apparently, more: according to Automobile, Bugatti is cooking up a new version called “SuperVeyron” for next fall’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Think of it is a super-Super Sports.

Although no supercars currently in production or on the drawing board (with the possible exception of the SSC Tuatara) can touch the Veyron Super Sport’s speed record, the SuperVeyron will up the ante even further. Top speed could go from 258 mph to a mind-boggling 288 mph. The SuperVeyron will also do 0 to 60 mph in 1.8 seconds, making it by far the quickest car ever produced.

To accomplish this incredible feat of engineering, Bugatti will apply the same technique it used to turn the Veyron 16.4 into the Super Sport: add power and lightness. The SuperVeyron will reportedly produce 1600 hp; it’s W16 engine may get a bump in displacement from 8.0 to 9.6 liters to get that extra power.

The SuperVeyron is also expected to lose 550 pounds, bringing the curb weight down to 3,527 pounds. That’s pretty impressive for an all-wheel drive car with creature comforts that rival a Bentley’s. Bugatti will use more carbon fiber to hit that target weight, but don’t be surprised if the engineers have to strip away some of those luxuries to make the diet a success.

The final piece of the puzzle will be aerodynamics. Like the Super Sport, the SuperVeyron will have the same chassis as the “regular” Veyron, but with some aggressive changes.

In the concept renderings, the Super Sport’s roof-mounted NACA ducts remain, but now the engine is almost completely covered. The W16 needs fresh air to keep it cool, which is why it sits exposed to the elements in all Veyrons. The ducting should provide enough cooling air, while preventing the area around the engine from trapping that air and causing turbulence at high speeds.Bugatti SuperVeyron rear three quarter view

The whole back end is also more streamlined, with redesigned taillights and vents that make it look less wide. That gives air a smoother path around the car as it flows past the body at 200+ mph.

At the front, Bugatti’s trademark horse collar grille remains the same, although the front air intakes appear to have been enlarged. There are also new, gill-like intakes behind the front wheel. It is unclear what purpose they serve, but they look cool.

Like previous Veyrons, the SuperVeyron features a rear spoiler that deploys at speed, and can also serve as an air brake, delivering the stopping power of a normal car’s brakes.

Despite being based on the same car the brand has sold since 2005, the SuperVeyron is an abrupt change for Bugatti. With its world speed record safe, the Veyron was supposed to have been retired in favor of a luxury sedan, the 16C Galibier, which executives hope will expand the brand’s appeal.

A supercar probably isn’t the way to go if you want to increase sales, but it’s hard to argue with another Veyron, especially if it performs the way predictions say it will. Long live the king.

Apple’s iOS Chief Ousted for Refusal to Apologize for Maps, Says WSJ

abc scott forstall nt 121029 wblog Apples iOS Chief Ousted for Refusal to Apologize for Maps, Says WSJ

Scott Forstall at iPhone 5 launch (Credit: Joanna Stern / ABC News)

Yesterday Apple announced that its head of  software for the iPad and iPhone,  Scott Forstall, would be leaving the company at the end of the year. It was a dramatic change for the Cupertino-based company and many analysts surmised that the ousting was a result of the quality issues with Apple’s iOS Maps and Siri applications.

The Wall Street Journal, however, is now reporting that Forstall was asked to resign after he refused to sign the Maps apology letter issued by Apple CEO Tim Cook back in September. Following widespread criticism about the new Maps app, which replaced Google maps in iOS 6, Tim Cook apologized to the public on Apple’s website and suggested other maps apps users could use while Apple fixed the problems.

“The incident was the latest clash between Mr. Forstall, who oversaw Apple’s mobile software unit, and other executives at the company. It led to one of the most significant management shake-ups in Apple’s recent history and its most sweeping changes under Chief Executive Tim Cook,” the Wall Street Journal wrote.

This isn’t the first time we have heard of Forstall’s issues with other exeutives at the company. A story in the October issue of Bloomberg Businessweek described Forstall as ”polarizing” and difficult to work with. The Wall Street Journal similarly says that Forstall wasn’t always “cooperative” and seemed to brag about his relationship with Steve Jobs within the company.

“Without Mr. Jobs to mediate, tensions between Mr. Forstall and other executives built, according to the people familiar with the matter,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

In Forstall’s absence, Jony Ive, the head of hardware design, will step in and oversee what Apple calls Human Interface.

“Of course, I’ve has been not entirely politic in suggesting that the software design decisions (leather!) were not ones he approved of. So who decides about product design in a post-Jobs Apple? Seems like Ive is the answer,” Jason Snell, editorial director for Macworld, told ABC News.

Apple also announced yesterday that its head of retail, John Browett, would also be leaving the company. Apple’s iPad Mini, which was launched last week goes on sale this Friday morning.

State of the Web: How Hurricane Sandy made me a believer

Hurricane Sandy: State of the Web

The destructive winds of Hurricane Sandy blew away more than just trees and buildings — it swept away my foolish notion that the Web is nothing more than a great place to find cute pictures of cats. It's a vital utility capable of saving lives.

As I sat at my desk Monday afternoon, the tree out my window bent at an impossible angle, tested by the indomitable tendrils of Hurricane Sandy. I witnessed a large, black bird being blown sideways through the air in a very non-bird-like fashion. I counted down the minutes until a wayward wheelbarrow would almost certainly come barreling through my living room. All this, despite the fact that I was in my land-locked home, two hours north of New York City, and far from the wrathiest parts of Sandy’s wrath.

South of me, the scene was far more grim. Tens of thousands lost power, a fate that awaited millions more in the hours to come. Roads closed. Entire towns drowned. Lower Manhattan flooded. Families — mine included — fled for their lives, kids and pets and vital tax documents in tow, for higher, drier, better-fortified ground.

Of course, I know all this because, like many of you, I spent much of Monday reading every tidbit of news, watching every eyewitness video, viewing every Instagram photo I could find of Sandy’s path of destruction. I’d become obsessive, unable to complete a single task without interrupting myself with #Sandy tweets, and Facebook status updates, and an endless stream of blog posts. All the while, the tempest’s roar droned on around me.

For far too long, I prided myself as something of a romantic luddite (as if there’s any other type), someone who waxed nostalgia on the simpler times, when our minds were free of the tenacious bombardment of information that defines our connected age. Through these black-and-white-colored glasses, the Web looked to me like a non-essential tool, something the human race — if not myself, whose livelihood relies on a solid Internet connection — could do without.

Even Sunday night, as the impending severity of Sandy became more clear, I found myself fantasizing about losing power. Perhaps I would hunker down with my dog and read a book by candle light, I daydreamed. Maybe I would just sit on the couch, in the dark, drink whisky, and get lost in my own head. Who needs all that chatter? Not me, I thought. I’d be better off without, at least for a day or two. Some forced disconnection would do me some good.

Then came Monday. As the winds of Sandy picked up, I found myself increasingly glued to the Web. And sometime around 3pm, it hit me: I would be completely and thoroughly screwed without it. More than heat, more than refrigeration, more than running hot water — I needed an Internet connection to outlast this blasted storm.

state of the web hurricane sandy

Online news about Sandy was not simply mindless drivel, but crucial information that could potentially save my life and the life of my family, some of whom were stranded gravely close to the waters of Long Island and needed to know as much about the storm as they could. Twitter, so often used for the purposes of self-promotion and meme spreading, transformed into vital public utility that provided real-time data about the danger outdoors. And Facebook, a site I generally viewed as some horrible joke on the notion of friendship, became my go-to place to quickly and easily let all of my loved-ones know I was OK, and to make sure they were OK too.

I fully realize that the previous paragraph may come across as though it were written by a bumbling Neanderthal just thawed from some neolithic block of ice — not a 29-year-old technology journalist who has spent more than two-thirds of his life online. And my only rebuttal to that is: I am a skeptic. And because of that, it has taken me this long to accept the worth of the Web, not just its powers of distraction.

Believe it or not, there are many people out there still on the far side of the fence. According to the Federal Communications Commission, approximately 100 million Americans who have access to high-speed Internet do not subscribe to the service. Many of these people presumably are unable to afford it. Others, like my next-door neighbors — all of whom are in their 20s — simply don’t care. They don’t even have dial-up! Why? I asked them once. Well, because they didn’t need it. At the time, it seemed to me a reasonable — even honorable — answer.

No more. The peril that imposed itself on much of the East Coast on Monday has converted me into an acolyte for the Web, a believer in the conclusion that an Internet connection is a vital utility, not merely something to keep us entertained or overly informed — an idea desperate people discovered long ago.

As the sun began to fall behind the Catskill mountains outside my window Monday evening, and Sandy rumbled across the darkening landscape, I basked in my newfound state of mind — a wisdom of the current human existence. But above all else, I hoped that the power lines stayed intact — not simply so my food wouldn’t spoil, or so I could take a hot shower in the morning, but because, when I woke up, I would need a way to make sure everyone I care about made it through the night unharmed.

Steps to Avoid E-Mail Phishing Scams

“Phishing” is a name given to a social engineering technique used to trick people into divulging sensitive information. Phishing has become increasingly common as a means to commit identity theft. By following this advice, you will be able to identify phishing attempts, thus keeping your information safe.

How To Avoid E-Mail Phishing Scams

CHECK THE “FROM” ADDRESS

Every e-mail you receive has a “header” that contains the address it was sent from and the ones it was sent to. The e-mail address is written as follows: “name @ domain.com”. Domain should be the actual site the e-mail claims to be from. For example, if the message claims to be from eBay, the domain should read ebay.com. Bear in mind that there are ways to falsify this information. However, you can use the domain to quickly spot many phishing attempts without further effort.
CHECK THE “TO”, “CC” and “BCC” ADDRESS(ES)
One of the easiest ways to identify a phishing scam is to determine if the message was sent exclusively to you or not. Check the e-mail header to see how many other recipients there are. Be sure to check the “CC” section as well. If there is a “BCC” section, the e-mail has been sent to other recipients whose e-mail addresses are hidden.
Email directly sent to me

CHECK FOR LINKS

Most phishing scams do not attempt to gather information via e-mail. Instead, a link is usually provided. That page is then designed to look like an official page from a reputable company or organization. Once you enter personal information, the scammer receives it and can use it for identity theft or other nefarious activities. Before clicking any link, check that the address matches the site the e-mail claims to be from. The address displayed in the e-mail can actually be disguised, as well. Once you click the link, a completely different address can be accessed in your web browser. Clicking a link in a suspicious e-mail is not advisable, however. Some pages are able to exploit security holes in web browsers in order to install malware onto your computer.

BEWARE OF LOGIN FORMS

A common phishing scam involves stealing login information. A link is given in the e-mail that goes to a page which appears to be the login page of a site the victim would normally use, such as Facebook. Once the user types in their user name and password, the information is sent to the scammer. At that point, the scammer is able to log into the account, change the password and assume control over it. The account can be used for spamming. In the event it was a financial site, the scammer could start stealing money or applying for credit cards in the victim’s name. If you suspect you have entered your login on a phishing page, log into your account and change your password immediately!

WP8 wars: HTC calls Lumia 920 a fatty, uses pennies to make a point

Oh No You Didn’t! HTC went on Facebook to flaunt its slender Windows Phone 8X device and take a jab at “that other Windows Phone” Nokia Lumia 920 for being “more than 20 pennies” heavier than the WP 8X.

A bit of research and we find that the American penny (or otherwise one cent) weighs exactly 2.5 grams. So we calculated 20 pennies to be precisely 50 grams, meaning HTC is referring to the 55 g heavier than the WP 8X Lumia 920. Ouch!

Here’s the picture attached to the post.

This rivalry over who’s Microsoft’s favorite started when the HTC Windows Phone 8X and 8S were released as “signature” devices. Nokia’s Head of Marketing Chris Weber took to Twitter to call out HTC as just tactically rebranding their portfolio unlike Nokia, which is “driving an industry-leading smartphone franchise exclusively around Windows Phone”.

Nintendo: Wii U launch games delayed to ensure steady releases in 2013

wii u

Nintendo is working hard to make sure it doesn't repeat past mistakes with the release of the Wii U console this fall. In order to make sure there's a steady stream of Nintendo-made titles on the market, it has delayed would be Wii U launch games into next year.

Major hints about the company’s plans for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS continue to roll out of Nintendo Japan in the wake of the company’s portentous earnings report last week. In the latest investor question and answer session, released in English on Monday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata shed light on the company’s plans for the Nintendo Wii U. Those hoping to get their hands on a steady stream of Nintendo developed and published titles like New Super Mario Bros. U and Pikmin 3 following the console’s release will have to be patient, but that patience will be rewarded.

When asked about how Nintendo plans to build market buzz around its new console, particularly with what games it will release strategically to create hype for the console, Iwata said that Nintendo will take a conservative approach to releasing new Wii U games.

“[We] realize the biggest challenge is to make sure that Wii U sells well even in the next year after the holiday season, and we are working on that too,” said Iwata, “Nintendo tends to release too many titles at the launch of a hardware system and as a result suffers a drop in new games for quite some time after launch, and for the Wii U launch, we are being careful not to let it happen.”

“Fortunately, third-party publishers overseas are launching many titles for us this time, and we were able to push back the release of some of the titles that we had originally intended to release as launch titles until next year.”

Nintendo’s plan for Wii U then is to carefully meter out first-party releases, instead letting third-party games like Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and Assassin’s Creed 3 carry the burden of keeping players stocked in new games. Previously announced titles like Pikmin 3 will be kept in reserve so Nintendo has a steady supply of games into next year.

Contrary to Iwata’s statements, Nintendo has always been conservative with its launch line-ups, reaching all the way back to the Super Nintnedo. That console, the Nintendo 64, the Nintendo DS, Gamecube, Nintendo 3DS, and even Nintendo Wii all released with just two or three original Nintendo-made titles in the line up. Iwata is correct in saying that Nintendo has been slow to follow those launches with new first-party software, though, an issue it has aggressively addressed with the Nintendo 3DS. Last fall, for example, Nintendo released both Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land within one month of each other, rare for tent pole releases.

That Nintendo is holding back near-complete titles for Wii U, allowing for even more polish on those games, in order to create a steadier stream of releases is a positive sign of growth for the company.

How To Migrate Your Blog from Blogger to WordPress

A blog that you have at Google’s Blogger service can easily be moved over to WordPress. You will first need a WordPress blog. There are three different ways that you can create a WordPress blog. A blog can be created at wordpress.com, you can download and install software at the wordpress.org site, or install WordPress automatically through the control panel of your web account using services such as softaculous or fantastico.

Determine how you want to set up your WordPress blog,. If you choose to install the software from the wordpress.org site, a web host will be necessary. You will also need a domain name. Search online and find a web host that is recommended by WordPress. One host that you can use is Hostgator. This host is available with a control panel that has an option to install WordPress, other recommended ones include Bluehost and Justhost.

Moving Your Blog from Blogger to WordPress

Step 1: Prepare your RSS feed if you want to transfer the subscribers to your blog. To do this, you will need to set up temporary blog feed by using a service such as FeedBurner.

Step 2: When this is done, log into Blogger and then navigate to the Site Feed option. Input your FeedBurner address in the Post Feed Redirect URL text box.

Step 3: Log into your new WordPress blog and go to the Permalinks option. You then need to type /%year%/%monthum%/$postname%.html into the text box.

The essence of using the above permalink structure is to make them look like blogger URL’s, it will keep your original permalinks intact, the implication is that if you for instance originally had 1,000 facebook like for a post, it will still retain that number of likes on your new site, otherwise you can simply enter /%postname%.html/,

Step 4: The next step is to transfer your posts and comments to your WordPress blog. Go to the Import option in WordPress that is under Import in the Tools drop down.

Step 5: A pop-up box will be displayed on your screen, you need to click on Install Plugin to install the importer plugin

Step 6: The next step is to activate plugin & run importer. You’ll be required to grant access to your google account. You will need to enter your log in information for Blogger to provide access to your account.Click on Import to begin the process of transferring information to WordPress.

When your posts and comments have been moved, you will need to transfer your feed. You will need to log into your FeedBurner account and change the original feed to your use your new domain name. The change will allow you to allow you to keep all of your subscribers.

Go back to your Blogger account and go to the Settings option. Click on the option for Basic and select Publishing from the menu. You will need to click the option for Custom Domain and then enter the new domain name for your blog. Click Save and the links for your old blog will transfer to WordPress.

Transferring from Blogger to WordPress will work much easier if you set up a free blog by creating the new blog at wordpress.com. The process involved when using this option is all automatic. When an old blog has been fully transferred, you can then begin to customize your new blog. This option is easier to use and does not require any additional steps to transfer data.

Cadillac plans price hike in the name of exclusivity

Cadillac thinks that the CTS might be losing sales to the BMW 5-Series because it's too cheap, a problem they intend to correct with the next generation.

The world of luxury goods is indeed a very strange one. This strangeness revolves around the idea that there is such a thing as too cheap. Not that an inexpensive product might be poorly made, but that a low price can make an otherwise appealing product something to be avoided. This is the unfortunate position which Cadillac now believe themselves to be in, according to a report in AutoNews. As the brand’s image continues to improve in the areas of reliability and driving dynamics, there is now a worry that the wreath and crest still don’t carry the same prestige as the big German competitors.

The Cadillac CTS has a price about $8,000 lower than the competing BMW 5-Series, but if you tried to explain why to someone who had never heard of either brand (unlikely though that might be), you probably couldn’t do it. But hasn’t slowed BMW’s sales one bit, and it’s clear that there is a market for cars which are more expensive just for the sake of being more expensive. Cadillac is therefore planning to bump up the price of the CTS following its upcoming redesign for the 2014 model year, thus narrowing the gap between it and the Germans.

The price is expected to still be below that of the BMW, but Cadillac’s aim is to narrow the gap. The price difference between their new ATS compact sedan and the competing BMW 3-Series is currently only about $3,400 and this will probably be about the gap which Cadillac will aim for with the new CTS. There is of course a risk of pricing the CTS beyond the price which the prestige of the brand is able to command, and Cadillac is certainly not in a position to ask more for any of their cars than BMW does, at least not yet.

There is certainly a logic to all of this, but the CTS already sells well, and one can’t help but wonder if this is being done for all the wrong reasons. The market has, for several years now, been leaning more towards smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles, and this is bad news for a company like GM, where the high profit margins from the SUV fad had kept them from needing to worry about their bottom line for so long. So is GM hoping to make up for a lack of SUV profits by pumping up the profit margin on their luxury division, or is this actually a good marketing move? We’ll see in 2014.

Assassin’s Creed III review: A remarkable story of life, liberty, and the pursuit of vengeance

Assassin's Creed 3 review

A new setting, a new engine, and a new hero push the Assassin’s Creed series into a brave new world littered with familiar trappings, but all fine tuned to make playing the game an experience and an event.

I recently found myself in a lengthy discussion regarding Hollywood’s apparent lack of interest in the American Revolution. There are entire websites dedicated to British productions of the Napoleonic Wars, but only a handful of the seminal moment in American history. Despite our near pathological obsession with capitalizing on anything that could turn a profit, the lack of entertainment focused on the fertile ground that Assassin’s Creed 3 makes its home is bizarre.

Perhaps it is out of respect for the subject matter and especially the subjects that stays our entertainment hand. Or perhaps it is simply the fear of not being able to find a story that can come close to reaching the emotional and cultural significance that the time period elicits. And yet it is a time that is ripe with possibilities.

Ubisoft wisely went in a different direction with AC3. Instead of building a game about the American Revolution, it designed a game that has universal themes and ideals, then tweaked it to fit with the history of the era. The story of Assassin’s Creed III simply exists during the founding of the country, but it is a story of freedom, betrayal, and revenge. And in terms of pure narrative, AC3 is one the best games around.

The War(s)

One stark difference between film and games can immediately be found in AC3‘s prologue. The opening of the game, which is actually fairly lengthy, contains at least two major twists, one for player and one for the story. It would be a disservice to discuss them other than to say that they create a powerful and personal narrative. You know who the enemy is and you know why they fight. You also feel a special bond with the main protagonist, the half-Native American, half-English assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, otherwise known as Connor.

AC3Without spoiling anything, the story focuses on Connor far more than the Revolution. You will see a great deal of the war, as Connor often finds his interests coinciding with events that resonate through history, but just as often he goes his own way and follows a story more in line with the franchise’s familiar war between the Assassins and the Templars.

As always, the story is linked to the present through the character of Desmond Miles, a reluctant assassin with an inescapable destiny. Desmond has been through a lot over the years/games, and his experiences reach a head in AC3. Although still very much the junior varsity to the historical star, Desmond finally gets his own playable sections sprinkled through the game, which culminates in the resolution of a story thread that has been dangling since the first Assassin’s Creed debuted in 2007. Again though, that is steering into spoiler territory. Just know there is a climax, but the story will certainly go on. That isn’t a spoiler as much as a knowing wink to Ubisoft’s business acumen. No matter what happens, there will certainly be more Assassin’s Creed games.

There will, of course, be a debate as to where Connor’s character stacks up with the other Assassins. It’s natural to rank things, and everyone will have their favorite – just look at the never-ending debate over the best James Bond. Where Connor ranks will come down to personal feeling.

What I can say, however, is that Connor’s story is perhaps the most personal of the three assassins (four, if you count Aveline de Grandpré, from the Vita’s Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation). Ezio quickly became an iconic figure. His charm and humor fed into the creative nature of the missions Ubisoft Montreal continued to dream up for him, and his own tragic story made for good gameplay. But AC3 revolves around Connor in a much different way, and the game cleverly creates a bond between the character and the player. The AC stories have always been sprawling, but the plot in AC3 is the easiest to follow, due in part to the more familiar locales and players, but also because of the narrative tricks Ubisoft introduces. The game is the least complicated of the AC games. That isn’t to say it is simple – it isn’t, there are some serious philosophical and ethical issues addressed throughout the game – but it is told in a more effective way.

FrontierYou see Connor as a child and walk in his footsteps for decades, and Connor is not a passive character. He isn’t as outspoken as Ezio; he has a moral compass that is continually tested, but remains true. The American Revolution may have become a singular and noble event in our minds, but the truth is far messier, and it was colored by gray more than black or white. That is represented here, which allows for a few shocks and surprises along the way.

Although Ezio’s story was perhaps more intricate, Connor and AC3’s narrative is the strongest in the series. It helps that Desmond’s sections buoy it rather than slow it down as was the case in the past, but the story and setting mesh so well that it presents the best overall story of a series renowned for its stories. It’s also worth mentioning that Lorne Balfe’s score is exceptional.

Pre-America

As much as Connor is the star of AC3, the settings are an equally important character. That might be an overused expression, to attribute a location or setting with a significant portion of the storytelling, but in this case it is apt. Ubisoft Montreal did a magnificent job of packing a lot of world into this game, and it is period accurate (as much as possible in an entertainment medium), which immerses you in the world of that time.

Assassin’s Creed 3 exists in three primary locations: Boston, New York, and the “Frontier,” all of which are shown between 1753 and 1783. There is also a fourth area that you call home, and it does contain missions, but it’s mostly optional how you approach them, and by design it tends to be a place you pass through rather than go.

BostonEach of the three areas is massive. Thankfully fast travel at anytime through the map to specific locations makes navigating the otherwise daunting geography a breeze. Both Boston and New York are packed with side-quests, fights, and historically accurate locations that may seem oddly familiar, but the difference between the places then and now would leave even locals lost.

The third section, Frontier, exists within the same set of rules, but interprets them differently. One of Connor’s most useful and unique traits is his ability to move through nature as easily as the other assassins move through cities. This opens a new world up in terms of gameplay, while the Frontier provides the fodder. You can now hunt and skin animals, which becomes your best source of income early on. This also opens up hunting challenges, although they are usually just something going on in the background (with the exception of a few missions) that you only recognize when an icon notifies you that you completed one, rather than a game like Red Dead Redemption which was designed to nurture an obsessive level of dedication. The Frontier is also where the weather effects are most notable, especially snow, which can hamper your progress, but also leaves trails.

Like all the Assassin’s Creed games, there is a certain amount of repetition. After the repetition-a-go-go that was the original Assassin’s Creed, the developers realized that interesting gameplay mechanics would only take them so far, and to its credit, Ubisoft has continually worked to improve the variety of mission-types in each game. The newest offering for the franchise continues that trend. There are several side-quests that play out like mini-games (things like defend an area from thugs, or beat up a group for info), and those tend to come in threes, but they are only repeated a few times and longer missions are broken up with new ideas. It is an improvement, even if it isn’t a massive one.

So Long, Tower Defense. Don’t Let the Door Hit You on the Way Out

The most important thing to know about Assassin’s Creed III is that it is very much an evolution of its now familiar mold. It does not reinvent the series. If you were not a fan of the gameplay and style of the previous iterations, then this game probably won’t do much to sweeten your disposition towards it. What it does do is take those familiar motifs and shine them where needed while focusing them in others.

AC3You still have the abundance of collectibles, the synchronization through scaling vantage points, and people that need you to deliver their mail, but other familiar institutions – like training assassins and taking Templar controlled forts – are much easier. To send out assassins you can just open a menu at any time, while fort commanders don’t run screaming and force you to return again and again until you can kill them before the scamper. Gone also is the messy tower defense mode. “I absolutely loved that feature in Revelations!” said no one ever.

Also gone are the Tomb Raider-esque explorations Ezio went through – repeatedly – to earn new armor. Instead, there are a series of somewhat similar missions where you search for pieces of a lost treasure map, but instead of a forgotten catacomb, you complete those missions in places like the middle of a British base or a sinking ship. They are shorter as well, which improves the pacing.

Obviously this isn’t a game changer itself, but it is representative of game as a whole. What could be annoying in the previous games may still be there (with a few exceptions like the nixed races, which no one will miss), but they are more streamlined in general and more fun as a result.

The Cut of AC3‘s Jib

One of the big additions comes by way of the high seas, as you can now take command of a ship and engage in naval battles. A few of these are required for the story, but most of these battles are optional. You choose your location – anywhere on the Eastern Seaboard from Canada down through the Caribbean – and then go out to sink your enemy. Some of these missions have you escorting other ships, while others are simply seek and destroy.

Naval WarfareThe gameplay mechanic is simple enough: you have a swivel gun, the broadside cannons, and you can weigh anchor, find more maneuverability with half sails, or gain speed with full sails – as long as you remain in the wind. The entire mechanic will take minutes to learn, tops, but it is addictive and you’ll be left wanting more.

It may at first feel like there is less content in this game than its predecessors, but that’s simply because the missions have been given more life. Instead of dozens of assassination missions, you may have hunter challenges that have you search a specific area and then kill a wild animal. It really isn’t that much different, but it feels fresh. Instead of several courtesan or mercenary jobs, you now have homestead missions, which improve your settlement and flesh out the character of the inhabitants (as well as helping to unlock certain bonuses like better weapons or more capacity pouches).

The economy has also seen a notable shift, but not necessarily for the better. Considering the last few games have all just been a matter of “buy buy buy” and there’s your economy, this is an improvement in the fact that it at least tries.

When you progress far enough, you can begin to manufacture and sell your own goods that were either crafted in by your settlement or collected by Connor. The more chests you open, the more recipes you can earn as well, which then allows you to craft better goods. Once you have goods, you can then set up a convoy to travel to merchants you have already met. In theory it is a serviceable mini-game, but in practice the menus are awful and counter-intuitive, and sorting through your goods takes patience and determination, which is only moderately rewarded until late in the game. At that point you won’t really need to spend the money you earn on anything. It is a chore, but it’s thankfully one you don’t have to use.

America was Built on Punches to the Face

One of the biggest issues the series has always faced is the combat, which at its peak was still just a game of blocking at the right time and then hitting the right button. The assassinations were fun and the parkour running was generally tight, but there were always questions with the larger scale combat. That is something that has improved with each game, and AC3 is no exception.

AC3 HomesteadIt isn’t a total overhaul, but it is a much better system than before. It remains linked to the parry mechanic, but that has now been expanded to include multiple ways to fight back that can then lead into chain kills, which we have seen before. Rather than just hitting the button fast enough, these do require a better sense of timing than before, which makes them more engaging.

You can also use your secondary weapons like the rope dart – a chain linked to a dart that can snare a man and leave him hanged – in the combo, as well as picking up muskets on the fly. These are minor tweaks, but they’re good ones. Linking moves together is smooth and easy, and changing up weapons produces great results. Things like aerial assassinations, jumping from a saddle and hanging kills are all simple to execute as well, and the new tools like the bow and the aforementioned rope dart make nice additions.

Welcome to Abstergo

The multiplayer returns with a few new tweaks and the addition of a new game mode called Wolfpack, a co-op centric mode that has you and three others hunting a group of AI controlled targets to earn kills and additional time to push you to the next sequence, then the next, and on. Since it is time based, it can be over incredibly quickly, and the co-op can lead to a bit of confusion as you all go for the kill, but it is a great game mode for people that have been with the multiplayer from the start.

The traditional game modes return, including team objectives and the now familiar deathmatch, with you’re hunting a character as another hunts you. The AC3 multiplayer isn’t a major change from previous offerings, but there is more of an emphasis on the story of Abstergo now.

MultiplayerThe conceit in the multiplayer has always been that you are playing the game as a member of the Templar-controlled Abstergo, which gave it a nice touch of meta. The new content furthers that ideal. It won’t change the way you think of the game, but it should be gravy to the fans of the offering.

If you enjoyed the previous multiplayer, you’ll like this one, if not, this won’t win you over. But with a campaign that is anywhere from 20-40 hours in length, there was no real need to include a multiplayer, and yet it is there, and it works. I’ve always considered it just a bonus to the campaign, and that hasn’t changed.

The Past Can be Ugly

So far my review has been full of justifiable praise, but there is a rub. AC3 is filled with glitches and bugs. More than once I had to restart from a previous checkpoint because an enemy I needed to kill was stuck in a wall. In one instance I managed to join him and we fell through the world together. Missing dialogue, repeated mission briefings that won’t start the mission, and a camera that occasionally sees things that it shouldn’t – like walls instead of you – plague this game occasionally, especially the Desmond sections. The odd chases, especially those on horseback, remain an iffy proposition as well, and they will certainly be the most failed sections.

Boarding PartyWith a few exceptions though, these glitches are just annoying rather than game ending, and while they are a constant companion, they are also less common than you might expect of such a massive game. They are also inevitable. With luck a few patches will knock most of these out soon.

Conclusion

Ubisoft Montreal took one of the best franchises around and polished it, cut the fat, and created one of the best and most compelling narratives in video games today. With a setting perfect for the ideals that fuel this series and a character that is perfectly suited to bridge the gap between modern sensibilities and the realities of the times, the story is not just an accomplishment for the game, it is an accomplishment for gaming.

There are a few problems throughout, but the narrative and pacing aren’t among them. Sure, AC3 is more akin to a summer Hollywood blockbuster than a powerful indie tearjerker, but it entertains throughout with good historical insight (mostly) and gameplay that makes you feel like a god among men. To top it off, the graphics are among the best ever seen on a console.

If you can overlook the bugs and are already a fan of the gameplay, then Assassin’s Creed III should stand near the top of your “Must Own” list. The Assassin’s Creed series is already one of the best franchises around today, and this is the best, most complete offering yet.

Score: 9.5 out of 10
