Whales, Dolphins Putting on Spectacular Show in Monterey Bay

Nov 30, 2013 9:45am

In the wild, animals go where the food is, so for hundreds of killer and humpback whales as well as dolphins, the place to be is California’s Monterey Bay.

They’re showing up for a booming seafood buffet thanks to an unusual late-season abundance of anchovies.

Related: Whales seen mating off the coast of California

“We haven’t seen anchovies in this kind of mass in years and years,” said Chris Arcoleo, owner of Chris’ Fishing and Whale Watching.

He said charter companies could not keep up with customer demand for whale-watching trips.

“It’s incredible.  We don’t have enough boats. We don’t have enough time to do it,” Arcoleo told ABC News. “You’ve got hundreds of whales in the bay, along with sea lions and dolphins.  It’s magnificent.”

Humpbacks can scarf down 3,000 pounds in a day. Their feeding frenzy is a once-in-a-lifetime show, with dozens of whales jumping into the air and lifting giant tails out of the water as they dive.

“Typically during the year you’re fortunate if you see four or five,” Arcoleo said.

The underwater bounty is the exact opposite of what researchers were seeing a few months ago in Southern California when hundreds of sea lion pups were washing ashore skinny and starving.

In March, Peter Wallerstein of Friends of Animals, Marine Animal Rescue, said he’d done 200 sea lion rescues since January.

“Commercial bait fishermen, friends of mine, said there’s no bait in the water,” Wallerstein told ABC News. “No anchovies, no sardines, no mackerel — the kind of food these animals eat.”

For now, however, there’s plenty to feast on both for the humpback whale and those watching the spectacle from a boat.

Android 4.4 KitKat degrades video playback performance

Android 4.4 KitKat is the latest version of the Google developed mobile operating system. The 4.4 was promised to enhance the overall performance and as far as we can tell from those devices that have already been updated that it mostly true.

However, it turns out that at least one aspect of the user experience has actually taken a turn for the worse. A study by OptaFidelity found that video playbacks in Android 4.4 is notably worse than it was on 4.3 Jelly Bean.

The study examined the playback capabilities of a HD video using the first generation Nexus 7 tablet and its 2013 edition before and after the Android 4.4 KitKat update. The test included the analysis of the 720p video playback at 30fps and 60fps along with 1080p videos at 30 and 60fps.

Surprisingly, the tests revealed that the best result in the video playback was with the original Nexus 7 that was running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The research firm also claims that the update of operating system has a negative impact on results of both Nexus tablets. Performance degrades notably once the update is applied.

The detailed analysis is available in the source link below, check it out.

The Sony Xperia C comes with a quad-core 1.2GHz low-powered Cortex-A7 processor, PowerVR SGX544 graphics and 1GB of RAM. While hardly the benchmark champion, this is the kind of hardware that can deliver either excellently smooth experience provided that the software is optimized well enough.

The Sony Xperia C is built around a large 5.0″ TFT display with 540x960px resolution, and it has dual-SIM capabilities and an 8MP rear camera as its key selling points. It runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but there is no information on upcoming updates just yet.

The Most Boring Game Ever? 3D Line-Waiting Game is Surprise Hit

By Ben Waldron

ht waiting in line game kb 131129 16x9 608 The Most Boring Game Ever? 3D Line Waiting Game is Surprise Hit

The goal of "waitinginline3d" is to stand in a line and avoid falling asleep by punching yourself in the face. Credit: Waitinginline3D

A computer game so excruciatingly boring that most players are unable to play it for more than two or three minutes is emerging as a surprise hit.

In “Waitinginline3d,” the goal is to stay awake while standing on a line of identical, highly-pixelated people for as long as possible.  As time progresses, you begin to fall asleep, your awake meter heads toward zero, and the only way to wake yourself up is to punch yourself in the face (and punching, of course, adversely affects your health).

“Punch yourself in the face to stay awake, but don’t punch yourself too much or you will die,” the instructions for the game warned.

Since the game went live on Monday, it has been played nearly a hundred thousand times, according to developer Rajeev Basu.

“I wasn’t sure how well it was going to do, but it’s really picked up momentum and steam rapidly,” Basu told ABC News.  “It’s been interesting seeing how long people have been lasting on twitter; most last between two and three minutes.”

“It’s about the balance between punching yourself to stay awake and making sure your health [meter] doesn’t go all the way to zero,” Basu said.

Basu says he’s received a range of reactions to his game.

“Most boring game ever,” and “worst game ever created,” are two of the responses Basu says he’s seen on Twitter.

“Best. Game. Ever.,” was another response, said Basu, who added that several prominent gaming companies including Electronic Arts and Activision have expressed their enjoyment in playing his game.

Basu demurred when asked about the best strategy for his game, and warned that most players will be unable to score a single point before succumbing to inevitable boredom and despair.

“You have to stick it out for quite a while,” Basu said.  “Players will have to really keep with it to see how long.”

Crustacean Invasion! Millions of Red Crabs Take Over Australia’s Christmas Island

Millions upon millions of red crabs on Australia’s Christmas Island are shutting down roads, covering beaches and stopping people in their tracks.

But to the locals who live there, coming across a sea of red crabs heading for the coast at the end of November is nothing out of the ordinary.

According to the Australian National Parks department’s latest surveys, around 45 million red crabs, made up of 14 different species, live on the tiny island, located roughly 500 miles off the coast of Indonesia.

Each year, adult red crabs, which can also look orange or, rarely, purple in color, migrate from the island’s lush forests to the Indian Ocean for breeding.

Christmas Island National Park Chief Ranger Rob Muller snapped these photos early Thursday morning.

“Yesterday morning at 4.00 am we headed up north to see what was happening -  but there were very few crabs spawning. Yesterday afternoon locals reported a number of crabs lining up on the cliffs and early this morning we were delighted to find a good number of females depositing their eggs,” Muller said in an email to ABCNews.com.

The annual migration, which is a big tourist attraction for the island, will only occur if conditions are right during the region’s wet season, according to Australia’s National Parks department. If the rains stop or weaken, the crabs will delay their migration.

The National Parks department said the crabs’ breeding timetable is fixed around the phases of the moon. Spawning typically occurs in November and December, but has been known to happen during the last lunar quarter in October.

Locals and national park staff build culverts to help the red crabs migrate, and will clear crab-filled roads with rakes to avoid running them over with cars or bikes.

nio card can do wireless payments, including Bitcoin transfers

Some of the most innovative products are coming from Kickstarter and the nio card is a combination of several such devices. It’s a Bluetooth and NFC enabled card that can keep your phone and wallet on a digital chain, replace your wallet altogether – including support for Bitcoin transactions – and help you stay fit.

The nio card is security conscious – when connected to your phone via Bluetooth, it will alert you whenever the device goes out of range. Either because you dropped your walled or forgot your phone.

This feature is present in other Bluetooth accessories, but nio goes further. With an accelerometer in the card itself and that in your smartphone, the card and smartphone app can be set to sound an alarm when either is moved.

If you do lose your phone, anyone with an NFC-enabled phone can tap the card to see your contact info to return it. Also, it they have a nio app, the phone will upload the location to a map you can view on the web.

The card can also use that accelerometer to track your run, similar to the Fitbit.

Other uses for the nio card include wireless payment, with the (so far) unique option to pay and receive bitcoins. Receiving bitcoin payments is as easy as tapping a phone to the card. Payments are more locked down – you need to press the Payment button and even then it only works if your smartphone is in range (so if it’s lost or stolen, payments are disabled). There’s a two-factor authentication system too.

The nio card has 2GB of built-in storage for your sensitive data. The Bluenio team behind the card is developing way to use the nio as a replacement for your house keys too.

You can back the nio card Kickstarter for £40 and receive a nio card. There’s an exclusive white card available too (just a few units left at the time of this writing). Packaging and shipping is scheduled for April next year, but as with all Kickstarter projects there’s no guarantees that there won’t be any delays.

Apple’s Black Friday offer goes live in Europe

Apple’s Black Friday has already gone live in Australia, where the Cupertino company is offering Apple Store Gift Cards with the purchases. However, the offers seem to vary from region as the company is offering discounts in place of gift cards in couple of other countries.

Apple’s Black Friday deals are now appearing on the UK, France, Germany and other European Apple websites. The online stores have promotional discounts on the MacBooks, Apple TV, iPads, iPods and other accessories.

Apple, on its UK website is offering the MacBooks and the iMacs with a discount of £81, while the iPod touch saves you £25. The iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPad 2 are also up for grabs with a discounted price tag.

The Black Friday promotional offers in the US and Canada are also live now, but they settle for the same gift card promotions as Australia.

Pebble now available on Amazon in the US, gets a $20 Black Friday discount

The Kickstarter funded Pebble smartwatch, which went on to be a big hit, is now available on Amazon in the US. The watch was originally available through the website but later hit retail stores in the US. Now, you can also purchase the watch from Amazon for $148.99 in black, gray, orange, red and white.

That’s not all; Pebble is also offering a $20 discount if you order the watch from its online store, which almost covers the $25 shipping charge if you are outside the US. But the offer is only valid till today so make sure you hurry.

The smartwatch category is still in its infancy and we are yet to see its true potential but if you want to get in on the bandwagon early, the Pebble is the best you can get right. Shame it still looks a bit like a plastic toy.

Apple offering Apple Store Gift Card with purchases this Black Friday

Apple’s Black Friday deal has gone live in Australia and slowly making its way around the world wherever the Apple Online Store is available. Unlike previous years where the company offered discounts on the products themselves, this year it is offering Apple Store Gift Cards with purchases.

The denomination of the Apple Store Gift Card depends upon the product you purchase. If you buy an iMac, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, you’ll get a A$150 gift card. An iPad Air will get you A$75 gift card and the iPad mini, iPad 2 and iPod touch will get you A$ 50 gift card. If you buy the iPod nano, you’ll get a A$ 25 gift card. There is no gift card available with the iPhone, at least in the Australian store.

The gift card deal is also available on some of the other products and accessories, such as the Apple TV, Parrot AR.Drone, Apogee JAM Guitar Input, with the denomination ranging from A$25 – 50 for the gift card.

Apple has never been known for its Black Friday deals and most of the time they are disappointingly low compared to what you might find from other online retailers. This year there is no discount at all but at least you’d be able to start off with some good apps or games after activating your device using the gift card.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 rooted

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is a great tablet, especially if you consider its price. But there’s one problem – it’s stuck with Amazon’s customized Android and Amazon’s own app store. With a bit of hacking, you can change part of that.

The Fire HDX has been rooted, which makes it possible to install the Play Store (though it’s not easy).

Rooting is also the first step to flashing a custom ROM, but there aren’t any of those just yet.

Anyway, you can find the necessary files and instructions over at this XDA Developers thread. There you’ll also find the responses of the first people who tried it and any problems they encountered (plus a place to ask if you run into trouble).

Keep in mind that this requires some technical skill as you have to manually execute some ADB commands. It’s not that difficult, but if you don’t know what ADB is, it’s probably better to stay with Amazon’s OS for now.

At least until someone comes out with a clean Android ROM to make the whole process worthwhile.

Retina Apple iPad mini gets blasted for having outdated display tech

DisplayMate, the website which specializes in rating and comparing display tech of mobile devices and laptops, has sharply criticized Apple’s iPad mini 2 in its latest shootout, pitting it against the Kindle Fire HDX 7 and Google Nexus 7.

The biggest criticisms come in regards to the color gamut and accuracy. The Retina screen of the new mini is way off what the iPad 3, 4 and Air have been offering so far in this respect.

The problem boils down to Apple’s use of outdated IGZO display technology in the Retina mini’s panels. IGZO, which was a relatively new display tech a few years ago, has since been replaced by LTPS – which Apple uses for its iPhones. Apple has also reportedly suffered from low yield rates for IGZO, and have resorted to making Retina mini’s with a-Si displays as well. a-Si has much lower power efficiency than IGZO, which Apple has been able to compensate for by using higher performance White LEDs, which roughly equalizes the power requirements of the two display technologies.

But perhaps the more pressing question is why Apple, renown for its high quality hardware, would choose to ship one of its hottest products with inferior display tech?

Rumors of potential shortages in Apple’s supply chain have been circulating since even before the iPad mini 2′s announcement, and earlier this month we reported alleged talks Cupertino was having with arch-rival Samsung to fulfill an order of some 15 million Retina mini panels.

Back then, it was reported that Apple could either go through the cost-prohibitive process of upgrading their panels to the LTPS substrate, or turn to Samsung to produce the required amount of panels by early next year, since their other suppliers – Sharp and LG – would not be able to get a high enough production yield.

It seems that for the time being Apple has solved the production problem with the help of a-Si panels, but has opened the door to criticism and potential hardware issues in the future.

Oppo N1 battery life test

The N1 proved to be a worthy phablet in Oppo’s premium market segment’s lineup and it’s now time to dig into the battery life breakdown.

The Oppo N1 opts for a big, bright and high-res 5.9″ screen but also brings a monstrous 3610 mAh battery to compensate. That, to put it in perspective, is more than the 3200 mAh of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the HTC One Max’s 3300 mAh, the Nokia Lumia 1520′s 3400 mAh and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra’s 3050 mAh. Let’s see how it did.

The Oppo N1 performed exceptionally well in our talk time test where it managed a minute over 25 hours. That puts the phablet in third spot along with the LG G2, which has the exact same score.

Speaking of big display – multimedia is one of the main departments where the N1 can really shine. The video test went on for 11 hours and 15 minutes – a great result ensuring you’ll be able to fill those long commutes or flights with movies any time with the Oppo N1. The HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 were each able to beat that score by 2 hours with less battery capacity, though, but also with smaller displays.

So by adding up the numbers with the stellar stand-by times the Oppo N1 exhibited we get an endurance rating of 79 hours. That means you’d have to charge the phone on average 79 hours after a full charge if you browse, watch movies and make calls for an hour each per day.

That’s quite impressive but it’s important to note that the HTC One Max was able to claim higher numbers on the browsing and video playback tests and came away with a slightly higher 81 hour endurance rating, while the Galaxy Note 3 came pretty close with 75 hours.

App Store search engine now corrects your misspelled queries

Apple has been working on improving its App Store search engine for quite a while and the latest tweak results in a better search results for misspelled quires or other minor spelling mistakes.

The App Store search engine is also enhanced to show results when you are looking for an app by its name but are unsure of the spaces in the title.

App Store’s latest improvements are expected to increase the app downloads for all the developers whose titles were particularly lengthy or hard-to-spell titles. The search engine change seems to have gone live a few weeks ago, but it’s only now that the developers have started to realize the effects of the new tweak.

‘Angry Birds Go!’ launches on iOS in New Zealand

Angry Birds Go! is the latest game in the Angry Birds series from Rovio and is the farthest departure from anything that has come before it. Like many franchises before it, including Mario, Sonic and Crash Bandicoot, Rovio turned to the go-kart racing genre for their popular franchise and now we have a go-kart racing game but with birds.

Angry Birds Go! was supposed to launch worldwide on multiple platforms on December 11 but Rovio has done a soft launch on iOS in the New Zealand region, so if you happen to be there the game is available for download for free.

Of course, every time you see ‘free’ now, you can just assume there are either ads or in-app purchases lurking somewhere within the app or the game and Angry Birds Go! has the latter. You can buy powerups and upgrades for your karts and you can buy coins that let you make these upgrades through IAP. There is also a Big Bang Special Edition car, which is priced at 64.99 NZD (53 USD).

We’ll be taking a closer look at the game when it launches internationally but for now you can download it from the link below if you’re in New Zealand.

CyanogenMod installer app removed from the Google Play Store

The official CyanogenMod installer was pulled out of the Google Play Store. The app was voluntarily removed after the Google Play Support team contacted CyanogenMod that its creation was violating the store’s terms.

The app specifically violated the Google Play Store Terms of Service by encouraging users to void the warranty of their devices, despite being harmless in its nature. As you probably know already, void warranty is one of the biggest downsides of rooting an Android device.

Launched a couple of weeks back, the official CyanogenMod installer, in conjunction with a desktop companion, allowed you to flash the company’s custom Android ROMs to compatible devices. According to CyanogenMod, the app has seen hundreds of thousands of installs for the two weeks of its availability.

Thankfully, removal from the Google Play Store does not mark the end of the road for the CyanogenMod installer. The app is available to download directly from the CyanogenMod website and can be sideloaded to any Android device. The freshly minted company is also submitting the app to the Amazon and Samsung app stores.

New Google Chrome extension brings hands-free voice search to your browser

Google has released a new extension for Chrome that will allow you to do searches within the browser using just your voice. Although voice search option has been available in Chrome for a while now, it required manually clicking on a button to activate it.

Now, using this extension, you can just say “Ok, Google” and the browser will automatically go into voice search mode, after which you can speak the rest of your query. This feature works as long as you are on the Google homepage or on a new Tab page.

The name of the extension is ‘Google Voice Search Hotword’ and can be downloaded from the Chrome Web Store, or through the link below the video.

Microsoft’s latest Scroogled video targets the Chromebook

After putting up a slew of videos slamming Google and actually selling merchandise on the store with the Scroogled logo on it, Microsoft is back with another video, this time making the Google Chromebook the target of their mockery.

This video actually features reality TV show personalities Rick Harrison and his father Richard Harrison from the show ‘Pawn Stars’. If you haven’t seen the show, it’s about this family who runs a pawn store where people come to sell strange and exotic items. The show is actually pretty decent, but I digress.

In this video, a girl who got a Chromebook as a gift comes to the store to sell it to get enough money for a ticket to Hollywood, at which point she’s told that she won’t get enough money for it as the Chromebook is “not a real laptop” because it does not run Windows and Office.

Now there is some truth to this video as Chromebooks aren’t particularly useful without an Internet connection. But to say that without an internet connection it is a brick comes across as FUD. And there’s also the eventual Microsoft argument that Google is using all your data to sell you ads and that Chromebook makes it easier.

Google is yet to partake in this mudslinging competition but they don’t really have to. If anything, these videos show that Microsoft feels severely threatened by Google and at this point is willing to go to any lengths to attract attention to itself.

Acer C720P Chromebook goes official with a touchscreen on board

Acer took the wraps off a new member of its Chromebook lineup. Carrying the model number C720P, the newcomer puts an Intel Haswell Chip, an 11.6” 1366 x 768 touchscreen, and affordable price tag under the same roof.

The Acer C720P is only the second Chromebook to sport a touchscreen behind Google’s own Chromebook Pixel. With a $299.99 price tag however, Acer’s offering undercuts the Chromebook royalty by a cool $1,000.

Like its sibling announced earlier this month, the Acer C720P Chromebook features Intel’s Celeron 2955U Haswell CPU. The latter is good for 7.5 hours of battery life. There are two gigs of RAM on board, 32GB of built-in storage, and 100GB of free Google Drive for two years. Wi-Fi a/b/g/n handles the internet connectivity.

The rest of the Acer C720P specs include HD webcam, USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, HDMI port, and stereo speakers. The notebook weighs 2.98 pounds (1.35kg) and sports a waistline of 0.78” (19.8mm).

The Acer C720P will be available in early December at BestBuy, Amazon, and directly from the manufacturer.

Nokia Chat powered by Yahoo! beta 1.3 is now faster with offline support

Nokia has launched a beta version 1.3 of its Chat powered by the Yahoo! messaging app. Available for Nokia Lumia smartphones, the messaging app brings a few new features and a boost in performance.

Naturally, the newer version also fixes some glitches of the previous iteration of the app, and improves the startup times. Upon launching the app users will immediately have access to the contacts list and will be able to read old messages.

One of the main features in this release is the addition of offline mode. It enables users to access old chats and see a cached copy of the contacts list. When you establish an internet connection, a new button will appear that’ll prompt you to re-connect and you’ll see your new messages.

Nokia Chat allows you to connect with other Lumia, Asha, S40, and Symbian users as well as those using Yahoo! Messenger. If you’d like to check it out, follow the source link to sign up for a beta access and download the latest release of the Nokia Chat powered by Yahoo!.

Canalys: tablets have caught up to laptops

The PC market as defined by analyst firm Canalys – desktop computers, laptops and tablets (devices with 7″+ screens) – is experiencing a major shift. The firm predicts that next year, tablets will make up half of the total PC market. And the PC market is growing (despite the declining shipments of desktops and laptops) thanks to a huge spike in tablet sales.

Tablets are almost there already – in the third quarter this year they accounted for 40% of the PC market and the shipments in terms of units was a hair short of the shipment numbers of laptops.

In the near future, tablet shipments will grow from a predicted 285 million in 2014 to 396 million in 2017.

Predictably, it’s Apple and Samsung that are the top players in the business. Apple’s iOS tablets are on top, but declining. The new iPad Air and iPad mini 2 will strengthen Apple’s position in Q4. Apple doesn’t care about market share though, Canalys points out that this is due to Apple’s high margins and that the company is one of the few making profit off tablets.

Samsung had a 27% cut of the Android tablet market, but the company’s position will decline too under pressure from vendors like Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo, who are already offering sub-$150 tablets.

Next year, Android tablets will dominate with 65% of the tablet market. Microsoft’s tablet offering are on the rise, but still don’t pose a challenge to Android and iOS. Microsoft will go from 2% in 2012 to 5% in 2014, according to Canalys. The analysts bring attention to the confusion caused by having three OSes – Windows, Windows RT and Windows Phone.

Microsoft EVP Julie Larson-Green has already stated “We have the phone OS, we have Windows RT, and we have full Windows. We are not going to have three.”

Xbox One drive defect will get you a free game

Microsoft has promised to reward new Xbox One device owners suffering from broken disc drive issues with one of four exclusive launch titles.

Xbox One owners who replace their faulty units through Microsoft’s Xbox One advance exchange program will be eligible for free digital copies of Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse, Zoo Tycoon or Dead Rising 3.

Microsoft has stated that the disc drive problem – a hardware malfunction of the One’s integrated disc drive – affects a very low number of units, although it hasn’t specified exactly how many.

Both the Xbox One and Sony’s PS4 have not been without their fair share of issues at launch, with the PS4 suffering from the “Blue Light of Death” that renders their consoles unusable. Xbox One owners suffering from faulty drives are still able to play digital copies of games, which makes Sony’s issue somewhat more critical.

Futuremark delists HTC, Samsung handsets for cheating

Futuremark, the software developer behind 3DMark, has removed the performance scores of four Samsung and two HTC devices from its benchmark database. The reason is simple – the devices were suspected in altering their behavior during testing thus breaking the Futuremark rules and are considered cheating.

The six devices that were delisted from the Futuremark scoreboard are Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (Octa), Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (S800), HTC One, HTC One mini, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition (Octa) and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 (S800).

We already know Samsung, among other manufacturers, is “optimizing” the overall performance on various benchmarks by boosting the GPU and CPU clocks up to 100% once you start certain benchmark apps. And while that isn’t strictly cheating, it turns out with the Galaxy Note 3 the maximum GPU clock is available only to benchmarks and not to games because there is a risk of overheating. So, yes, Futuremark is probably right to remove those scores.

We’ll follow this case and we’ll inform you if other devices get their scores banned or when some of those will be allowed back in the scoreboards.

Google shows off Nexus 5 camera in new videos, fails to get the irony

Google has released three new videos showing off the camera functionality on the new Nexus 5. The first video showcases the Photo Sphere feature, which was first seen on the Nexus 4, and lets you capture 360 degree panoramas. The second shows the new HDR+ feature and the last one shows the Auto Awesome feature, that generates animations from your burst shots.

All this would have been great had the camera on the Nexus 5 not been so underwhelming. The image quality is mediocre at best and the camera software itself, other than a couple of tricks, is utterly basic with a messed up viewfinder.

Maybe next time Google will actually put a good camera on their Nexus phone and then makes videos like these. But then again, they have failed to do that five times in a row so I won’t be holding my breath for it.

Apple officially acquires the 3D sensor tech company PrimeSense

In a short statement to AllThingsD, Apple confirmed its acquisition of the 3D sensor technology company PrimeSense. Based in Israel, the company is responsible for the Kinect sensor of the Xbox 360.

Apple reportedly paid close to $360 million for PrimeSense. The aforementioned amount is higher than a previously floated sum which was in the vicinity of $300 to $350 million.

At this point, there’s no word on what Apple’s intentions for using the PrimeSense tech are. Speculation on possible implementations ranges from future Apple TV products, all the way to mobile devices.

Eric Schmidt posts a lengthy guide for switching from iPhone to an Android handset

Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt surely surprised us on this otherwise quiet Sunday. The top executive posted a lengthy guide for switching from an iPhone to an Android smartphone on his personal Google+ account.

Unsurprisingly, the guide takes a couple of jabs at Apple. Eric Schmidt kicks it off by saying that many of his iPhone-toting friends are converting to Android.

He continues by telling us that the latest high-end Android smartphones are faster, more intuitive to use, and make a great Christmas present to an iPhone owner. Curiously, Mr. Schmidt compares the iPhone to Android experience to switching from a PC to an Apple Mac computer.

What follows afterwards, is a step by step guide to jumping on the Android bandwagon from iOS. It is a close to a thousand words in length and covers everything – from finding your apps on Android, through moving contacts, all the way to syncing your iPhone photos.

Mr. Schmidt concludes his guide with some general advice. He recommends Google’s Chrome browser over Apple’s safari as an option which is “safer and better in so many ways”.

The full guide is available at the source link below. Feel free to drop us a line with what you make of it in the comments section.

The app, founded by Cyriac Roeding, Jeff Selinger, and Aaron Emigh, allows users to find products in a variety of big name retailers, such as Macy’s, Best Buy, and Crate and Barrel, and rewards users with bonuses, or “kicks” when shoppers enter a store, scan items, and make purchases.

And this past week, the app launched shopBeacon, a small gadget that rests on a store’s wall and utilizes Apple’s iBeacon Bluetooth Low Energy signaling technology to alert shoppers to open the app when they walk into a store. It launched in a beta trial in Macy’s stores in Union Square, San Francisco, and Herald Square, New York,

To use the app, sign in with Facebook and browse items by searching through participating stores, such Old Navy or Sephora. Tap on “Area” to search stores and items nearby or select “All” to see a feed of trending items. Users can create a “book” of items they like by tapping the heart icon and saving them to a wish list. Once shoppers have accumulated enough kicks, they redeem those rewards for gift cards.

Is it easy to install?: Shopkick downloads quickly and its interface is simple to navigate. The app requires access to your location services and microphone in order to alert you to deals.

Should I try it?: Today, there are numerous apps designed to help consumers seamlessly locate items and find deals; Apps such as TheFind, for example, offer an impressive list of more than 500,000 retailers and allows users to scan and price match within a store, and coupon apps like RetailMeNot allow users to access and apply savings directly from their phones. Still, Shopkick’s ability to alert you to deals and promotions within a store coupled with its colorful, fun-to-use interface make this app an enjoyable sidekick to your holiday deal-hunting.

Stephen Elop reportedly mulling Xbox and Bing split if elected as Microsoft CEO

According to a report in Bloomberg, Nokia’s former chief Stephen Elop has grand plans in consideration if elected as the next CEO of Microsoft. Already on the shortlist for the position, Elop is said to consider selling off the Xbox business and axing Bing.

In addition to the abovementioned changes, Stephen Elop is reportedly mulling over expanding the reach of the popular Microsoft Office to a broad variety of devices, including iOS and Android products. Currently, Microsoft is offering a stripped down version of the suite for iPhone and Android smartphones, which is available only to existing Microsoft Office 365 users.

Getting rid of Xbox and Bing has been called for by investors in the past, as the duo is considered to be a costly distraction for Microsoft. A Nomura analyst report suggests that Microsoft’s earning can be boosted by 40% in fiscal 2015 if the company sells the two businesses.

Stephen Elop will certainly be up to the above tasks if given the top job at Microsoft – as a Nokia chief, he killed off Symbian and spun out the Finnish company’s mapping services into a separate business. For the time being however, such events are not considered very likely, as Microsoft is moving towards integrating Bing deeply into its product lineup.

Microsoft is yet to choose its next CEO. Reports suggest that a decision might be made before the end of the year.

‘Device 6’ for iOS game review

Mobile devices have infiltrated the gaming segment in a big way to the point where they are now the primary gaming platform for a lot of people, even if they don’t realize it yet. We now have games from all genres available on the mobile platform. But while several of them try to emulate console gaming experience on the small screen, some are designed from the ground up for the touchscreen.

I have said repeatedly in the past that it is this category of games that interests me the most. The joy of playing a game designed with the attributes of the touchscreen in mind and actually takes advantage of it rather than being crippled by it is quite something. Device 6 for iOS is one such game, and today we are going to take a close look at it.

Title
Device 6
Developer
Simogo
Platform
iOS
Release Date
October, 2013

Size
137MB
Price
$3.99

Gameplay

If you have seen the screenshots of Device 6, you may have noticed that there is a lot of text in the game. That’s because the game primarily is text based, where majority of the time is spent reading. The experience is similar to reading a novel but with some interactive puzzles in between.

The game tells the story of a woman named Anna, who finds herself waking up in a strange castle all by herself. She has no idea how she got there, where everyone else is and how she’d escape. She has no choice but to explore the place, solving puzzles and moving from one location to another, hopefully getting close to making sense to the situation she’s in.

There is no guiding the player here. The game is already written for you, you just read through what Anna is doing and thinking. The story is told from her perspective and you know as much about the place as she does. Yet, occasionally you are taken to this different place in between levels where you are referred to as Player 249 and made to answer some questions, giving feedback about several things, including the game itself. It’s all quite wonderfully vague at the start and leaves you curious as to just what exactly is going on.

While the game is told through text, it’s not just simple text thrown in front of you like a book. As you scroll on the screen reading the text, the character is moving with you as you read and doing activities that you are reading at the very moment.

The game also does this wonderful thing where it plays sounds at the right moment depending upon where you are at the point. If you are reading about the character walking along a corridor, you will hear her footsteps as you scroll, with the sound stopping as you stop scrolling. This way you sort of feel you are guiding the character even though her fate is already decided.

The text also flows in different ways. If the character is taking a left turn, the text turns left and then you have to turn the device and scroll in that direction. Imagine moving along a path on a map, except the path here is made of text. During the course of the game, you will end up turning your iPhone or iPad in every possible direction. Sometimes, you have to go back and forth while solving puzzles to gather all the clues, which is when all the swiping on the screen to move around can get a bit tiresome.

Speaking of puzzles, each chapter has one puzzle to solve after which the chapter completes and you move to the next one. It usually involves entering some sort of a code on a keypad and the clues to what you should enter are provided through audio clips that play in the background, hidden messages in the images and riddles.

In terms of difficulty, these range from moderately challenging to “What is this I don’t even”. You really have to pay attention to what is being said, either through sound or text and interpret the meaning behind it to be able to solve some of them, whereas others require you to memorize a number and being able to do some basic math.

Unfortunately, there are just seven chapters in the game, and the last two don’t have any puzzles, so you have a grand total of five puzzles in the game to solve. On an average, you should be able to complete the game in 2-3 hours and once you know the answers you can finish it in one if you play it again. It’s not necessary that a game has to be supremely long to be enjoyable but you wish an enjoyable game is long and that is the problem with Device 6. It gets over way too soon for its own good.

Graphics and Sound

Visually, Device 6 is mostly text based but the way the text is laid out and flows in different direction, suggesting where you should move next is what’s so great about it. The game also features some graphics that make terrific use of parallax scrolling that move as you move on the screen, sometimes showing hidden clues that you’ll be needing later.

The sound consists of slow, dramatic music placed cleverly across the chapter that adds to the creepy vibe of the game. Best part is the way sounds such as music or audio clips fade as you scroll away from them. You can hear them playing in the distance as you continue reading, making you feel like you’ve physically moved away from the source of the sound.

Verdict

The unique text-based gameplay makes Device 6 an experience unlike anything I’ve had before. It feels more like reading a really good mystery novel but with some interactive puzzles in between that will wrinkle your brain. The presentation is also top notch, with superbly laid out text and imagery and an awesome sound to provide the backdrop.

It’s far from perfect. For one, it’s way too short and gets over just when you get the hang of it. Secondly, sometimes moving back and forth to solve the puzzles can get a bit tiresome.

That aside, this is still an excellent game and worth a shot if you enjoy solving riddles or just want to try something different.

Rating: 8/10
Pros: Superb layout and presentation, intriguing story, challenging puzzles
Cons: Short, moving back and forth to solve puzzles can get tiresome at times

EXOvault EXO18 luxury case for iPhone 5s review

The EXOvault EXO18 case for the iPhone 5s is aimed at users who find the look of their already high-end smartphone a tad too common. The cover is made using exotic materials which include aluminum, brass, nickel, rosewood, ebony, and ziricote wood.

EXOvault accessories are handcrafted in low volume by a small team of artists in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Being manufactured in New York’s trendiest neighborhood undeniably adds an extra layer of cool to the EXOvault products, so hit past the break to find out what it’s like to have an iPhone 5s in one of them!

I had the chance to spend quality time with an EXOvault EXO18 crafted from Pau Ferro (a rosewood varietal) with silver metal accents. The case features a blend of phenolic resin composite core, wood veneer, and metal accents.

The EXOvault EXO18 case looks stunning in the flesh. The combination of wood and metal give the cover a trendy, yet classic look. In short, an iPhone 5s dressed in the case will be able to fit effortlessly in both a classic study or a popular nightspot.

The wood veneer used in the case also guarantees its unique looks, as no two pieces of it are alike. Users who want to add an extra touch of individuality can do so by ordering a custom engraving on their case for an additional cost.

The EXOvault EXO18 case consists of two separate pieces which are assembled around the iPhone 5s with four high-quality screws. Two spare ones and a screwdriver are included in the retail package.

As far as protecting your iPhone 5s goes, the EXOvault EXO18 is up to the task despite it luxurious aura. All the edges of Apple’s smartphone are covered, so it is all but certain to be able to survive an accidental drop.

Due to the exotic materials used in the making of the case however, users should be careful when dropping their device in order to keep the EXOvault EXO18 itself from damage. EXOvault have taken the matter into consideration and offer a reasonably priced (considering the case’s cost) repair service. The latter includes offering a complete replacement at half price in case your case gets completely totaled.

Ergonomics are well-covered. The EXOvault EXO18 case offers unobstructed access to all buttons and ports of the iPhone 5s, including the fingerprint sensor. There’s even a dedicated cutout for easily launching the iOS 7 Control Center.

Wrap up

The EXOvault EXO18 case for the iPhone 5s is a bona fide luxury item. The cover’s makers have no intention for it to reach a wide audience of users – such a thing would kill the small volume/high individuality philosophy behind it.

Users with the budget and the taste for the EXOvault EXO18 case however, will have their iPhone 5s wrapped in a distinctly-looking, beautifully crafted case. It is certain to take the smartphone further upmarket while bringing the high-level of individuality its price tag demands.
