Facebook Welcomes Zynga’s Farmville 2

Farmville was and continues to be one of the most popular games on Facebook. At the peak of their popularity, Zynga boasted of 83 million monthly players. The game that was launched in 2009 redefined online gaming and established Facebook as the biggest market online game developers could receive.

Why Farmville 2?

Based on the initial success of Farmville and some other popular games, Zynga took some steps to further their establishment in the internet gaming industry. All was not well afterwards as the company was a little too reliant on their games running on Facebook and neglected making some newer ones. The company went public in December last year and launched their shares for a price of $10 on NASDAQ. Things spiraled down a little too quickly and the current share price is at $2.92. The number of users playing Farmville also started tumbling down, obviously people need something new. The number which once stood at 83 million fell to 18.9 million. Some chief officers at Zynga also had to resign last minute following a dismal performance for the financial quarter. Farmville 2 is a product that is aimed at releasing some of the pressure on the company.

What’s New in Farmville 2?

Farmville 2 is Zynga’s first attempt at a game built and launched entirely in 3D. There are several new features and a much better interface. Some new features that the second edition of Farmville offers are that users can actually feed farm animals and bake things out of the crops that they harvest. Also, prior to have to individually click on each farm, repeatedly to plant multiple farms, there is now option that allows the player to drag the mouse over an area and plant crops. New decorative features like wind chimes and rocking chairs also ensure the appearance is also improved.

What Will Happen to the Original Farmville?

Users have made and maintained farms on the original version of the game since 2009. Zynga have decided to honor their commitment and keep supporting Farmville. In fact, not just support it Zynga will continue expanding and adding new features to the game. This is probably a move to kill two birds with one stone. By doing this, Zynga have launched a new product and popularized it and at the same time, there may be renewed interest in the original one that took the company places. On the contrary, this could simply be a move to squeeze out the last drops of juice while the developers figure out a way to shift the user farms on Farmville to Farmville 2. As of now, old and seasoned Farmville players need to scratch developing their farms from scratch on Farmville 2.

Whether Farmville 2 manages to carry Zynga back to their glory days remains to be seen but it sure looks like a move that will have an immediate impact. Also, it is the last bail-out card that Zynga had and has now been used. If this does not work, they may become another online brand to slowly fade into oblivion. If it does work, and gets popular, hopefully Zynga have a plan to do some sustainable work. Either way, if you are not into social gaming on Facebook, get ready to receive a lot of new application requests.
