Disadvantages of Technology for Children in the Present Generation

Technology particularly the birth and development of computers indeed offer several benefits. However, along with the good things they bring are the bad influences especially when it comes to young users or children. Kids as young as three years old nowadays can already gain access to computers. Some of them are using such a device with a parent or older sibling, while others are on their own. Many parents thought that by making their kids more computer literate every single day, they become wiser. What a lot of them haven’t noticed are the negative impacts that are slowly invading their kids’ life.

Predators are Online too

Strangers, who can be dangerous for children, aren’t only present in the real world. Many of them are also online throwing baits at kids. They can probably just stay on the Internet and influence children from afar, but when a meet up is arranged, everything goes on to the next level. Unfortunately, there have been a lot of cases already when kids and young teens get lured by certain individuals claiming to be of the same age group. These individuals pretend to like the same things children do.

The Real Case behind Gaining Confidence Online

Children with low confidence and self-esteem often interact with people who better understand them. They join online groups through social media and get the chance to talk to those who are in the same situation as them. Children will likely become active members of those groups and eventually earn the confidence they need. However, that confidence is actually just in the virtual world, which they will soon find more engaging and safer to be in. When this time comes, these children will develop a fear in interacting in the real world. They would prefer to continue living virtually than losing their face in the real life.

Bullying on the Internet

Because of technology, almost everything that is normally done in the real world is now possible online. This is definitely good news for everybody as it surely can make their way of living better. However, when you look at the other side of the story, you will notice that many of the negativities in life are also riding on to the virtual world. Bullying, for example, is now present on the Internet. In fact, more teens have committed suicides because of cyber bullying. Victims are targeted using social media such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.

No More Time to Exercise

Kids in the previous years go out and play after they come home from school, eat dinner and do their assignments. They are mostly outside playing with friends especially on weekends. With today’s technology, this kind of setup is slowly changing and disappearing. Children now run to their room, turn on their computer and connect to the Internet. They either play online games or update their profiles on various social networking sites. They prefer to sit in front of their  computer until bedtime. This is obviously one of the major reasons for the increasing rate of childhood obesity.

Parents should be more aware of these issues before they buy their children a computer and allow them to be online at any time. They should limit their kids’ access to the Internet and monitor the pages their children have visited.
