Urban Dictionary: A Web Based Dictionary of Words

Part of what we will be doing on this website from time to time is to bring you the best Technology has to offer, The best of the apps, the best of the plugins, the best websites, some of those innovative tools you never really knew existed and yes, talking about the best websites, ever heard of urban dictionary?

Urban Dictionary is a Web-based dictionary of slang words and phrases not just in the Queen’s English but there are also other kinds of sayings, jargons, etc, for instance when by typing the word “how far” which means “what’s up” in Nigerian pidgin English as opposed to how far something is, I got some results which can be seen below:

You also get to see words like “dude”, a word Americans use to address each other or “Okey dokey”,  ”nae bad” or “nae bother” a scottish Scottish slang for – “not a problem”

Urban Dictionary contains 6,743,306 definitions as of 6 September 2012. It welcomes submissions from anybody and submissions are regulated by volunteer editors and rated by site visitors. In 2008, Time‘s Anita Hamilton included it on her 50 best websites of 2008 list.

How Does it Work?

Pretty much like Wikipedia  the content is a user generated content, visitors to the website can choose submit definitions without registering, however, they must provide a valid e-mail address to facilitate the submission process. Entries submitted online become the property of Urban Dictionary but before they are included in the dictionary, all new definitions must be approved by editors.

Users and Traffic

According to sources available online, As of June 2012, the site contains over 6.6 million definitions. As of April 2009, there’s an average of 2,000 words submitted every day, it receives approximately 15 million unique visitors every month with traffic coming from mostly folks under 25 years of age

Urban Dictionary was founded in 1999 by Aaron Peckham while he was still a freshman computer science major at California Polytechnic State University
