YouTube to live stream 2012 presidential debates for first time

YouTube has announced it will be live streaming all three presidential debates between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney this month, offering American voters and political junkies everywhere the chance to find out more about the candidates' opinions on the big issues.

Political junkies, listen up. YouTube will for the first time live stream this month’s presidential debates between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, the Google-owned company announced in a blog post on Monday.

Of course, if you live in the US, the stream simply offers up another option for viewing the debates, with a slew of TV channels also showing them live. YouTube’s stream may be of more interest to US citizens living overseas, or anyone overseas following US politics, for that matter.

The video streams of the three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate will be provided by ABC News and shown on YouTube’s Elections Hub page.

To spice things up a bit, comment before and after the debates will be provided by eight YouTube Elections Hub partners, including Al Jazeera English, Larry King, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

With most polls showing President Obama with only a slight lead over Republican rival Romney, the debates could prove decisive in November’s election. A sure-footed, impressive performance by a candidate could seal the deal for many voters, while a bumbling, gaffe-ridden display may result in voters turning to the other side, or simply deciding not to vote.

For anyone that misses the live streams, YouTube said it will be posting them in full – together with a bunch of highlights – at youtube.com/politics.

The first debate kicks off on Wednesday at 9pm ET as Obama and Romney come face to face at the University of Denver.

Below are the dates and times for each one:

- October 3 at 9pm ET (presidential)

- October 11 at 9pm. ET (vice presidential)

- October 16 at 9pm ET (presidential)

- October 22 at 9pm ET (presidential)
