Twitter beefs up board with appointment of media mogul Peter Chernin

Twitter has appointed Peter Chernin to its board, a man well known for his connections in Hollywood, among other things.

Described variously as a media mogul, a Hollywood power broker, a bigwig, a big hitter and even a big shot (you get the picture – he’s big), Peter Chernin of The Chernin Group has joined the board of Twitter.

A former executive at Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, Chernin left the company in 2009 to form The Chernin Group, a giant firm which manages and invests heavily in media and technology businesses around the world.

Rumors of Chernin joining Twitter’s board have been swirling around for a while now, with the microblogging site confirming the news in a tweet on Thursday, saying simply, “Welcome, @PeterChernin, to Twitter’s board.”

As if becoming a director at Twitter wasn’t already a big enough event for Chernin, the occasion prompted another momentous happening – his very first (and possibly last?) tweet. “I’ve been a long-time user of Twitter for news and information. Happy to be joining board of this very exciting company,” he wrote.

The LA Times described Chernin’s appointment to the board as “an instant injection of big-media experience just as the company is looking to pump up advertising sales and cut media deals.” Beefing up its board with significant players such as Chernin also stands Twitter in good stead for a possible IPO at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Other board members include Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo, co-founder and former CEO Evan Williams, co-founder and Chairman Jack Dorsey, and venture capitalists Fred Wilson and Peter Fenton.

Chernin helped to launch online TV service Hulu and is also sits on the board of online music company Pandora.
