The Sony Xperia Z1 draws the crowds with an impressive camera and powerful chipset, but it’s also worth mentioning that the slender phone packs a large battery as well. It’s got a 3,000mAh fuel tank capacity, let’s see if it will go longer than the Xperia Z Ultra, which has virtually the same size battery (and chipset too), but proved to be a bit disappointing.
Well, the smaller screen should make a big difference (that’s 40% less surface area), but will that be enough?
We’ll have to wait a bit to find out as the screen is off during the call test. The Xperia Z1 dethroned the Huawei Ascend Mate (a 6.1″ phablet with a 4,050mAh battery) and takes the lead spot by a whopping margin of almost two hours. The LG G2, an respectable opponent with serious camera aspirations and a sealed 3,000mAh battery as well, barely got past the 25 hour mark.

We’re afraid we have to cut the Sony Xperia Z1 victory parade short as the next test, the web browsing test was decidedly less impressive – the new Sony flagship was a minute short of the six hour mark. That’s about half an hour better than the Xperia Z Ultra, but we expected more given the large difference in screen size. True, the Z1 screen is a little brighter, but not enough to cause much of a difference.
The Xperia ZR with a 4.55″ screen and a 2,300mAh battery is second best (after the LG G2 by just 2 minutes) in this test, but the Xperia Z1 will not be joining it at the top.

Unfortunately for the Xperia Z1, that’s not the end of it. Its video playback time is barely better than the web browser time and that’s not good. Even the Xperia Z Ultra did a better job here here and went on for nearly 9 hours, 2 and a half hours more than the Xperia Z1.
The X-Reality display of the Z1 is an notable improvement over earlier Sony screens, but unfortunately enjoying a 2-hour movie on it will eat a third of your battery.

The standby performance of the Sony Xperia Z1 is pretty good and our endurance rating of the phone settled at good 53 hours. That’s enough to get you through a couple of days of medium usage, but you can expect daily charging if you do a lot of web browsing or watch videos on your commute.
The Sony Xperia Z1 does improve in two areas over the Xperia Z – talk time is up a whopping 11 hours and the endurance rating is 5 hours higher, but the web and video playback times have barely moved (and we don’t necessarily mean “moved up,” the web browser time is actually down).
