According to e report by Nikkei, Sony is planning to sell its Vaio division which designs and manufactures personal computers. The move is dictated by the business unit’s poor performance, as well as the Japanese giant’s desire to shift its focus on smartphones.
Sony will reportedly sell its PC business to the investment fund Japan Industrial Partners with the estimated price ranging between ¥40 billion and ¥50 billion ($391 million to $489 million). As part of the agreement between the two companies, Sony will continue to sell personal computers under the Vaio brand in markets where it is well-established. It will handle after-sales service as well.
Potential sale of the Vaio division by Sony will result in a net loss for the fiscal year ending on March 31. Previously, the company was projected to report a profit of ¥30 billion (about $295 million).
Sony began selling personal computers under the Vaio brand back in 1996. Currently, the division has a staff of about 1,000 people.
