Nikon announces the 1 V2 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera

Nikon has announced the newest member of their Nikon 1 series of mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The Nikon 1 V2 has a 14.2 megapixel CMOS sensor and a new design, that unlike the previous Nikon 1 series cameras has a proper grip like a DSLR to make it easier to hold.

Other features include a built-in flash, notably missing on the V1, along with a hotshoe for attaching the new optional SB-N7 compact speedlight, a new Command dial, EXPEED 3A image processor, 73 point AF system, 15fps burst mode for up to 45 images or 60fps for up to 40 images, FullHD video recording and a 3.0-inch, 921k dot LCD.

The Nikon 1 V2 will be available in late November 2012 for $899.95 along with the 10-30mm kit lens. The SB-N7 speedlight will be sold separately for $159.95.

Sony Xperia V to feature sensor-on-lens display technology

Sony has confirmed that the upcoming Xperia V will feature a special sensor-on-lens technology.

This will allow for a decrease in display thickness, as well as for a more direct touch experience with whatever is being displayed.

The new technology will allow Sony to remove the extra sensor layer located between the display and the lens, and create a type of hybrid layer that combines lens and sensor. This brings a 5% improvement in display luminance, as well less haze.

The removal of the extra layer also helps decrease overall weight and thickness, although Sony has not stated by how much the Xperia V has slimmed down thanks to the innovative feature.

The Xperia V was introduced at this years IFA as part of Sony’s new lineup. No word from Sony on whether any of the other Xperias introduced there will feature sensor-on-lens layers as well.

Sony RX1 spotted, allegedly packing a glorious full-frame sensor

After stuffing in a one-inch sensor inside the point and shoot RX100, it seems Sony is now going to put in a full-frame 35mm sensor inside an upcoming compact camera known as the RX1.

The RX1 looks like something that is barely larger than the RX100 but with a bigger lens to go with that ginormous sensor. The lens in question is a 35mm f/2.0 Carl Zeiss lens that looks like it’s removable but is fixed to the body. Despite being fixed the lens has manual focus and aperture adjustment dials just like on removable lenses so those used to DSLRs can feel at home.

Due to the fixed nature of the lens the RX1 is not going to be pocketable like the RX100 but it’s still looks way smaller than most DSLRs and not even close to those with a full-frame sensor inside.

Other noticeable features include a focus mode dial next to the lens, built-in flash on top with a hot shoe next to it for another one or a mic, mode adjustment dial, shutter release with a power ring and an exposure adjustment dial.

With a sensor that big inside, you can expect some amazing image quality from this camera. Unfortunately, it seems that it would come at a hefty price of around $2,799. Still, for someone who wants a high quality camera that isn’t the size of a handbag, this seems like a very good choice.

Dropbox announces Samsung Galaxy Camera integration – and I’m starting to get excited

The Samsung Galaxy Camera is getting its legs prior to launch.

For the better part of the last year, digital camera talk has shifted from being focused entirely megapixels, sensor sizes, and lens quality to connectivity and OS concerns. The digital imaging industry was turned on its head not by a revolutionary new pocket point-and-shoot or a faster-than-fast DSLR, but by a dark horse known as the smartphone.

Appropriately, manufacturers are responding with all sorts of experimentation to keep digital cameras competitive in their own right. Wi-Fi connectivity is starting to become a more popular feature, although it’s being implemented to varying degrees of usability, and several names have tip-toed into Android integration.

And the trail blazer is proving to be Samsung. In addition to bringing a bevy of connect cams to market this year, the manufacturer recently unveiled its Galaxy Camera at IFA. The part-camera, part-smartphone device is the first to really bring this sort of hybrid to the mainstream.

Today, Dropbox announced it would integrate its cloud storage service into the Galaxy Camera, giving users the ability to sync their images to their other connected devices. And then there are the expected features you’re going to get with this thing, such as instant Instagram posting – which there should be some mixed feelings about. Personally, I’m anti-non smartphone-captured images making their way to Instagram, but to each their own. But there are other apps which will have easy access to the Galaxy Camera’s photos, most notably Facebook and Flickr.

When it comes down to it, Samsung took their Smart Camera lineup (16.3 megapixel sensor, 21x optical zoom, manual controls and pre-set modes), and attached a Galaxy phone to it – complete with Jelly Bean and 3G/Wi-Fi or 4G/Wi-Fi connection options. I was a big fan of how easy the WB150F’s Wi-Fi settings were to navigate, but this is a whole other level of easy use.

It’s certainly exciting, and the newly announced Dropbox integration is extremely promising for where this thing can go. But it begs a really big question: Why isn’t anyone else doing this? I can’t help what’s happening with Polaroid’s ambitious SC1630 Smart Camera – last I heard, back in March, the camera was still in production and samples were unavailable for reviews. And where are Nikon and Canon? Clearly, Samsung’s mobile prowess is giving the brand a serious leg up, which is at once wonderful and frustrating. Samsung’s never quite been a digital camera powerhouse, offering up decent but never cutting-edge quality devices. As a user, I want the best of the best of the best and I want it to have every featured I crave – and that now means connectivity for cameras.

Sony announces the Sony NEX-5R mirrorless camera, we’ve got live photos

Sony’s latest mirrorless interchangeable lens camera has just been unveiled – the successor to the NEX-5N, the Sony NEX-5R.

The 16.1MP APS-C sensor on the Sony NEX-5R can do 10 fps continuous shooting and 1080p video at 60fps.

The new mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses features Wi-Fi connectivity, the option to install in-camera apps and hybrid autofocus with on-sensor phase detection elements and contrast-detect AF.

Sony has incorporated the new “fast Hybrid AF”, which uses 99 phase-detection AF points on the sensor to accurately detect the distance to the subject distance and then switches to the 25 contrast-detect AF points to fine-focus on it.

The NEX-5R will be available this October in black and white for about $750 with an 18-55 mm kit lens or about $650 for the body alone.

How a new dad keeps tab on his newborn with DIY laser and Wiimote hack

By extracting the camera sensor from a Wiimote, hacker Gjoci built an inexpensive baby breathing monitor via a light triangulating method.

Even before blogger and hacker who simply goes by Gjoci became a dad, he spent weeks attempting to build a baby breathing monitor for the upcoming arrival of his daughter. But unlike your average baby breathing monitor, Gjoci crafted the device out of a Wiimote sensor and 1 milliwatt lasers to help detect whether his newborn was still peacefully sleeping.

Gjoci was able to accomplish this by disassembling a Wiimote and using the camera sensor to recognize three spots of lights. He then positions three 1 milliwatt lasers to watch over his newborn as she sleeps, allowing the device to detect the small movements of light as the baby breathes. These movements account for anywhere between just two to four pixels, making it perfect for the Wiimote’s extracted camera sensor to detect such detailed changes. There are also lights on the actual sensor computerboard that flashes in a pulse-like pattern, similar to what you’d see when measuring sound noise.

Every few milliseconds, the camera would check if the spots of lights are still gently shifting. If the breathing becomes irregular according to abnormal light patterns, Gjoci would be alerted with a buzzer sound. So far, the device has only given Gjoci a “very low number of false alarms,” and no hardware crashes or malfunctions. Still, you gotta wonder if the baby is curious as to why there are beams of light hovering over her body each time she awakes.

Gjoci claims since newborns don’t move very much, it seems fairly safe to use lasers on the child without running the risk of flashing into her eyes. This, of course, is still somewhat debatable in the Hack A Day comments section. Some readers suggest using infrared LED lights with reflective tape on the baby’s clothes to shine lights back to the camera sensor to reduce the safety risk from little to zero. Others question the possibility of a thermal detection.

Whatever the adaptations, the possibility of hacking a Wiimote into something much more useful outside of gaming is a remarkable and creative idea. If you want to read more on how Gjoci created the device, follow him on his blog. In meantime, here are a few videos of the sensor’s demonstration.

Opinion: Are you ready for the physical Web?

The Web might not just be a place you visit on your laptop anymore. Wearable computers and ubiquitous sensor networks promise to bring the benefits of connectivity to all aspects of life in the near future.

You are sitting in a park when a small child tugs on your pant leg and warns you not to step on the magical creatures under your bench. Odds are she doesn’t have a vivid imagination; she’s just playing The Hidden Park, an iPhone app.

In this game, kids point an iPhone around the park, and they follow a map that tells them where the magical creatures live. They have to solve riddles and puzzles, and they take pictures along the way — which can serve as “proof” to doubting adults that we are not alone.

Welcome to the early signs of the “physical Web,” where everything in our world is as digital and interconnected as the Web is today. It will change your career and your life, so let’s take a quick tour.

The company is experimenting with Ping, a ring that gives you feedback when you exercise, and Move, a line of clothing designed for athletes and dancers to help them understand precisely the movements of their bodies.

Not every innovation will necessarily represent a step forward for society. A Japanese gadget enthusiast hooked up a Kinect (from Microsoft Xbox 360) sensor to a pair of video glasses and created a virtual girlfriend named Hatsune Miku, who follows him around. She’s a pretty good, if somewhat creepy dancer; no word on how good the developer is.

Here’s one thing I’m pretty sure about: Looking through a computer will be dramatically different than looking at a computer. You look at your laptop and smartphone, but when companies start offering smart glasses we will literally look at the world through computers.

When this happens, Hatsune will have lots of competition. Zombies, athletes, movie stars, game tokens, fact sheets, cooking demonstrations, and, yes, advertisements will be everywhere. At this point, we all will have three choices: ignore the changes, dig deeper, or escape the real world.

#1 Ignore the changes

Since my intention is to write about entrepreneurial opportunities arising from technology, this isn’t the option I’d recommend. Sure, you could stick your head in the sand and reject new technologies. But the people likely to do that stopped reading five paragraphs ago.

#2 Dig deeper

The Physical Web will bring humanity closer to the truth than we have ever been before. I don’t mean “the meaning of life” truth. I mean the truth as in, “Is it time to water my garden?” or “How long will it take me to drive from my office to home if I leave right now?”

bigartmob art mobile augmented reality appNearly everything will have data connected to it, or will become data itself. BigArtMob lets people position art — from graffiti to museum art — onto a map, where people can then access it and it can become the foundation for, say, personalized art tours.

You probably know that smart glasses are nearly here. More than 17 million people have watched Google’s Project Glass video showing how data will be overlaid on nearly everything you see.

This data will make you smarter, which is another reason not to choose option number one. If you do, everyone else could be smarter than you.

Of course, you won’t need to don a pair of smart glasses to benefit from the physical Web. You could instead just connect sensors around your home, yard and office… and then tell your stuff what to tell you.

To get a sense (no pun intended) of what this will be like, stop by IFTTT. Here you can already tell the Web what to tell you. For example, I use IFTTT to send me a text every time the word “snow” is in the forecast in Vermont. Even better interfaces will spring up for sensors.

#3 Escape the real world

Watch for escapism to get a lot more powerful.

I have no inside information whatsoever, but you can bet that one of the first power users of smart glasses will be the porn industry, which is always the first to embrace new tech. “In your face” will take on a whole new meaning.

So if you buy your teenager a pair of smart glasses, you might also want to think about limiting what he or she can do with them.

Game companies will be close behind porn merchants, with new offerings that bring zombies, aliens and monsters into the real world. Players will be able to hunt and “kill” real-life people and animals, as well as imaginary characters that the rest of us don’t see.

occulus rift kickstarter virtual reality glassesI’m not a fan of movies or TV shows in which the viewers get to choose the ending, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see new types of entertainment spring up that allow people to escape far away from everyday life. As I write this, the Oculus Rift virtual-reality headset is blowing the doors off its $250,000 funding goal on Kickstarter. The headset will bring gamers inside the game, in a way no device has done before.

And it’s a pretty safe bet that by this time next year even Oculus Rift will seem tame.

So what does this mean for your career and your life? Keep in mind three things as you make decisions about what to buy, where to work, and how to invest your savings. The emerging physical Web will:

1.) Link devices to other devices, plus devices to people and vice versa.

2.) Cause sensors to be built into nearly everything, and they will be connected, too.

3.) Let you tell all this stuff what to do, and what to tell you.
