Dropbox for iOS finally updated to match the iPhone 5 taller screen

Dropbox pushed a much needed update to their iOS app on Apple’s Appstore. The new version not only makes full use of the iPhone 5 taller screen, but also has done away with the previous photo size limitation when printing pics or saving them to the Camera Roll from the app.

The new update bring the application version to 1.5.6.

The biggest change is that it removes the previous limitation where saving a high-resolution image from Dropbox to the Camera Roll would downsize it to the meager 960x638px size.

Unfortunately, as TheVerge reports, while resolution remains intact, the app still compresses the images while downloading, so for now, saving images from the Safari web browser remains one of the easiest workarounds to getting full-size high-res shots to your Camera Roll.

Apple no longer calls their Maps the most beautiful and powerful ever

Hot on the heels of the new alternative Maps apps section in the AppStore, Apple has also toned down their elated iOS6 Maps app copy as keen visitors to their website have spotted.

As it’s conveniently clear from the screenshot, the previous copy called the new Maps app “the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever”. The new wording turns the attention to another key feature – “the beautiful vector-based interface that scales and zooms with ease” and certainly takes a more modest stance.

I wonder when are they going to change the messed up icon as well.

It clearly shows a navigation route making a sharp left off a bridge.

Jetpack Joyride arrives on the Google Play Store

After being exclusive to the Amazon Appstore for a while, the developers of Jetpack Joyride have now released the game on Google’s Play Store. As you’d expect, the game is available free of cost.

In case you’re not aware of this game, Jetpack Joyride is a 2D side-scrolling game where you ride a jetpack and have to go as far as possible, thus getting a higher score. You collect coins during the game, which can be used to upgrade your jetpack and the special vehicles that you get in the game. You also collect spin tokens, which let you spin the slot machine at the end of each game.

I haven’t played the Amazon Appstore version so this is the first time I’m playing the Android version of the game. Compared to the iOS version, the Android version is not as smooth, with occassional stuttering although overall, it is still playable. The stuttering should hopefully be fixed in future versions. The sound and the graphics are similar to the iOS version and are just as good.

Amazon launches Android Appstore in Europe: UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain

Amazon has launched the Android Appstore in Europe. People in the UK, Germany, Italy, France, and Spain can now shop for apps on Amazon.

The European launch of Amazon’s Appstore for Android has been expected for a while now. The company has just announced that it is open for business in the UK, Germany, Italy, France, and Spain. Each country will enjoy a localized version of the mobile app store available now. This brings the popular “Free App of the Day” and other Amazon promotions to many European customers. It also means access to personalized recommendations, customer reviews, and 1-click payments.

Amazon’s Appstore offers something different from Google Play because, as Jim Adkins, Vice President of Amazon Appstore, points out “We evaluate and test games and apps before making them available in the Appstore”. That means a smaller selection, but potentially higher quality apps and games. The exclusive promotions that Amazon runs have been especially popular in the U.S. and so there’s little doubt they’ll prove popular in Europe too.

Existing Amazon customers with Android devices are likely to give the Appstore a try, but the company may need to release the Kindle Fire for the service to really take off in Europe. Amazon’s Android device is not currently available in Europe — it seems content licensing deals could be holding up the release.

Interestingly in Germany, France, and Italy it will be called the “App-Shop”, in Spain it is “Tienda Apps”, and in the UK it is the “Amazon Appstore for Android”.
