When Tasering goes wrong: UK cops use stun gun on blind man, mistook his white cane for samurai sword

Poor Colin Farmer was minding his own business last Friday when he was Tasered by a cop who mistook his white cane for a samurai sword.

In the UK, the vast majority of cops don’t carry guns. When trouble occurs, they have only their baton and powers of persuasion to deal with the situation. In recent years, however, more and more cops have been issued with Tasers.

As you probably know, a Taser is a kind of stun gun that allows a cop to administer an electric shock to a person who is out of control or refusing to co-operate. While it can be an effective tool for law enforcement agencies, use of the device can sometimes go horribly wrong – like it did last Friday in Lancashire, north-west England.

In an incident that would be amusing if it wasn’t so shocking (no pun intended), a cop messed up big-time with Colin Farmer, a 61-year-old blind man who walks with the aid of a white cane.

Somehow the cop, who apparently isn’t blind, mistook Farmer’s white cane for a samurai sword (yes, a samurai sword) and fired the Taser at his back, administering a massive electric shock in the process.

Farmer, who was taken to hospital following the incident, has – not surprisingly – made an official complaint which is now being investigated by the UK’s Police Complaints Commission.

Speaking to the Guardian about what must have been an utterly terrifying ordeal, Farmer said he’d been walking down the street Friday evening when he suddenly heard lots of shouting. He had know idea it was the police. The next moment he felt something hit his back.

“The Taser hit me in the back and it started sending all these thousands of volts through me and I was terrified,” Farmer said. “I mean I had two strokes already caused by stress. I dropped the cane involuntarily and I collapsed on the floor face down.”

He continued, “I was shaking and I thought ‘I’m going to have another stroke any second and this one is going to kill me. I’m being killed.’”

Farmer said he walks so slowly that the cops could easily have walked past him first, or driven past, to confirm that it was a white cane he was carrying and not a samurai sword.

Chief superintendent Stuart Williams of Lancashire Police managed to throw at least a little light onto what had happened, saying that prior to the incident a number of sightings of a man wandering around with a samurai sword had been reported to police.

“One of the officers believed he had located the offender,” Williams told the Guardian. “Despite asking the man to stop, he failed to do so and the officer discharged his Taser. It then became apparent this man was not the person we were looking for and officers attended to him straight away.”

He added, “Lancashire Constabulary deeply regrets what has happened. We have clearly put this man through a traumatic experience and we are extremely sorry.”

A man with a samurai sword was later arrested by police – and no, he wasn’t Tasered.

While Tasers may be a useful tool for police, it seems that some cops in the UK need better training on when to use them. Lessons on how to tell the difference between equipment that helps guide the blind and lethal weapons that can cause horrible injuries are evidently also required.

Twitter silently rolled out a user directory to boost search engine efforts – but is it helping?

twitter directory

Twitter quietly launched a directory listing the majority of its users in an effort to boost its search engine presence. It's the latest effort by the company to establish itself as a media network driven by the hunger for ad revenue.

This week, the Internet noticed that Twitter had quietly rolled out a directory of its users, though a Twitter spokesperson tells us it was actually introduced a “few weeks ago.” While this might seem like a rather small and inconsequential feature, it’s yet another sign that Twitter is hell bent on evolving into a media company and pushing its ad revenue strategy; it’s one more way to get eyeballs on the propriety Twitter site, and instead of just competing with third party developers, this time Twitter is trying to work its way around Google.

Back in January 2012, Google came under fire for favoring Google+ results in its social search feature and cutting out data from Twitter and Facebook. The effort that users had put into surfacing their Twitter and Facebook accounts — inarguably the most important social profiles there are — was immediately buried when Google flipped the switch.

Right away, Twitter voiced its disapproval. “For years, people have relied on Google to deliver the most relevant results anytime they wanted to find something on the Internet… We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that’s bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users.”

Regardless of the history between Google and Twitter, it’s in Google’s best interest to its users as “a search engine’s ultimate goal is to give people what they want,” says Dan Eng, Senior SEO Strategist for Red Bricks Media

Now, since it appears the Google isn’t doing Twitter any favors, Twitter is doing what it can to get its content better Page Rank. For instance, Twitter recently changed its robots.txt file to enable search engines to crawl content within tweets and hashtags. Eng offered us his two cents about how Twitter was positioning its directory for search engines to index. “It’s mostly likely taking users from top to bottom in authority. Logic will say that the most popular and active users should get preference in content creation for indexation while inactive or spammy profiles hold less weight.”

What this means is that you can now search for general topics like “fashion” or “presidential debate” in a search engine, and you may find tweets from relevant and preferential Twitter users showing up in the search results. Or if news breaks, Twitter hopes that search results will offer relevant tweets.

And in addition, of course, is the full user directory Twitter has published that should help index many Twitter accounts with all search engines.

“If successful, Twitter would have expanded their reach by presenting their well-received content through a new source for their existing audience as well as providing a new channel for first time users and users that have dropped off over time,” Eng pointed out. “If Twitter’s audience responds well to this information, search engines will have no choice but to recognize it as valuable content that is helpful and in demand from their searchers.”

Twitter confirmed as much when we asked about the new directory. A spokesperson told us it was released, “to help people find the accounts they’re looking for with various search engines. Public and protected accounts are included.” The spokesperson emphasized that protected tweets will remain private to the user and accepted followers.

If you’re logged out of Twitter, you can access its directory from the bottom of its homepage, to the left of Twitter’s copyright mark. Opening up the page will present to you an index of Twitter accounts listed in Latin and non-Latin character names listed by the name that you’ve signed up on Twitter with (not your Twitter handle).

Interestingly enough we’ve found that the directory limits the number of pages you can visit (or calls you can make) within a restrictive time frame. When we opened up more than five pages within the directory in a span of a few seconds (not links to individual Twitter accounts), we were greeted with a blank page on the sixth page. The rest of the site work was working as intended.

From the directory, I was able to find my own Twitter account, @francisybea under “Francis Bea,” as well as my colleague Molly McHugh, @iammollymchugh. We’re skeptical that every single Twitter account appears in the directory, but it could be close to listing the full 500 million users. We’ve estimated that under “A,” there are 18 million user names alone.

Twitter’s spokesperson cryptically hinted that not every account may appear in the directory. “Similar to search results, we have methods to filter for quality accounts.” The spokesperson then directed me to Twitter’s Help Center to read the requirements for a user to show up in Twitter’s search results. Basically, it says the directory will only list what Twitter deems “quality accounts”  – a determination that’s reminiscent of how Twitter hands over Verified Account badges. Accounts that don’t meet Twitter’s expectations per “Twitter’s Search Rules and Restrictions” could be penalized by being excluded from the directory.

 google twitter directory

While how Twitter decides who gets to be in the directory is interesting, what really matters here is how effective its efforts at getting indexed by search engines are. When we conducted a Google search to find out how many accounts were indexed from Twitter’s directory using the query site:twitter.com/i/directory/profiles, as SearchEngineLand (which noticed the directory roll out) had done, we found that just a mere 618,000 Twitter accounts had been indexed (fewer than SearchEngineLand found earlier this week). At last check, this number had risen to 644,000 results, which indicates Google is continuing to index them.

bing twitter directory results

Bing on the other hand has yet to index Twitter’s directory and returns just one result. DuckDuckGo offers just two results.

Is Twitter’s directory necessarily helping to crawl more Twitter accounts? Not yet at least; the directory doesn’t appear to make much of a dent on Google’s search algorithm when accounting for the fact that just 0.0012 percent of Twitter’s directory of 500 million accounts are being indexed by Google — although that number appears to be rising, albeit very minimally.

Neil Patel, co-founder of KISSmetrics and marketing blog Quick Sprout, agrees. “Percentage wise, I don’t think it will cause a huge lift. I would be shocked if it causes their overall traffic to jump by more than 10 or 15 percent,” he says. “When you have millions of Twitter profiles, naturally not all of them will be indexed as good portion of their user profile pages aren’t popular, contain very few tweets, and aren’t linked to from other websites,” Patel explained. Still even a five percent increase would result in millions more visitors, Patel adds, the idea being this respectively boosts Twitter’s ad revenue.

As Twitter tightens its grip on its ecosystem, motivated by its renewed focus on advertising, the directory should improve Twitter’s search visibility — even if just by fractions. The better the company’s search presence on Google, Bing, or any other search engine, the more traffic it will bring in. And of course higher traffic means more ad revenue. So even if that increase is minute, it’s existent.

“Just like any business out there, Twitter has to keep on growing. And a good way for Twitter to do that is to leverage the number one site on the web, Google, to gain more traffic,” says Patel. “Through their directory initiative, move people will find Twitter when they Google names or use any other search engine.”

So what does this mean for everyday users of Google, Bing or other search engines? Twitter has consistently been a source for the freshest information, so “now by making this information available to search engines, Twitter provides helpful on the spot data whereas a page that needs to gain organic rankings would never be able to reach,” say Eng.

Xbox from Mars, iPhone 5 from Venus: 60% of mobile gamers are women

women in mobile gaming

While PC and console gamers are almost evenly split along gender lines, a significant majority of mobile gamers are women.

Talk to the indie game maker, and he’ll tell you that the place to find an audience is on mobile devices like the iPhone 5. Talk to the video game publisher, and he’ll tell you the same thing, because there’s no revenue model quite so promising as that of the free-to-play, microtransaction supported mobile game. Both of them will agree that it’s tough to get your game in front of people. Only a few video games release at retail each week, but literal hundreds hit app stores on a daily basis. Marketing a mobile game isn’t easy, but at least game makers and publishers alike know which audience they should target: Women.

EEDAR, a video game industry research group, published the findings of a recent survey breaking down mobile gaming demographics on Friday. Women now represent the majority of the mobile market.

Of the 2,491 mobile gamers between 15- and 64-years-old interviewed for the survey, 60 percent were women.

“What we are finding is tapping into that female client is more important than ever before,” EEDAR’s Jesse Divinch told USA Today, “It really is changing the face of gaming.”

According to the ESA, the split between men and women in the overall video game market, including PCs and consoles alongside mobile devices, is 53 percent to 47 percent. With the shift towards touch based devices, social games based on constant interaction with friends, as well as games that require less time investment, women have become a dominant force in mobile.

This has surprised mobile and social game makers, especially as they’ve turned to real money gambling games in the past 18 months. “If you are building for mobile and you want to scale to the broadest possible audience of purchasers, you do need to absolutely focus on [women,]” said Big Fish Games CEO Paul Thelen. Big Fish opened its very first real money mobile casino on iOS this past August, “You would think Texas Hold ‘Em would skew [towards men[, but we are seeing 65 percent of the revenue coming from [women.]”

The importance of women will likely force a number of publishers previously focused on the console and PC markets to reconsider their mobile businesses. Activision Blizzard, for example, is only now growing its internal mobile game development. Its new Leeds-based studio The Blast Furnace is making mobile titles based on older games like Pitfall and they’re rumored to be taking over Call of Duty for mobile devices, not exactly games built with women in mind.

iOS users more likely to use 3rd party browsers than Android users

The browser war on the desktop is very heated, but in the mobile space things are pretty calm – the overwhelming majority of Android and iOS users use the default browser on their device.

Here’s something you might not have expected though – Chitika, an ad network and data analytics firm, found out that iOS users are more likely to install and use a 3rd party browser than Android users.

A hair over 91% of Android users stick with the Android stock Browser that comes as part of the OS. The number of iOS users who use Safari is “only” 85%. These numbers come from Chitika‘s ad network, measuring a week of US and Canada web traffic.

Apple limits third-party browsers on its iOS platform – basically, they have to use Safari’s rendering engine and a slower version of Safari’s JavaScript engine (it’s the same engine, but third-party apps don’t get to use JIT).

So, almost all third-party browsers on iOS are just repackaged Safari with a different UI and some extra features (the exceptions being mostly Opera Mini-likew compression browser, which render the sites on a remote server) and yet 15% of iOS owners would rather have that than pure Safari.

Chitika found something else that’s quite interesting – of the 15% share of third-party browsers on iOS, only Chrome has a significant share (at 3%) and the other 12% are split between many different browsers, none of which has any statistically significant share.

On Android, however, only the big names have a measurable share. Surprisingly, Opera is the biggest non-default browser on Android, with Chrome having only half its share. The third player, with barely over half a percent share is Firefox.

Fraunhofer Institute LED light panels mimic the sky indoors

LED Ceiling Tile

These tiles each hold 288 LEDs, which are able to mimic the motions of clouds and colors of the sky.

If you’re like the majority of America, you spend a large part of your weekdays under fluorescent lights. The worst part about working in an office is the lighting. It’s true that light is supposed to make you feel awake, but fluorescent lights are a different story. Around afternoon time, you get that drowsy feeling. It’s what prompts you to get a second cup of coffee. It’s also what prompts you to notice how draining and depressing the fluorescent lights are.

You especially notice this once you finally get off work and enter the outside world. You’re enveloped in warm sunlight (if you’re lucky) and remember what it’s like to be human again. Because, let’s face it, when we’re sitting at our desks typing away, we are closer to robots than humans. Not that that’s a bad thing.

It’s the sunlight and the sky that make us truly feel awake and alive. But most of us don’t see the outside world at work, unless we manage to get a desk close to a window.

For the rest of us, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute have brought the sky indoors with a lighting solution for offices that makes a sky effect on the ceiling. It is made of LED lights which mimic natural lighting conditions, including passing clouds and different shades of blue and gray.

The lights are 20-inch by 20-inch tiles, each with 288 LEDs and diffuser films. The LEDs are colored red, blue, green, and white, making them able to produce more than 16 million hues.

Dr. Matthias Bues, head of the department, said, “LEDs allow us to simulate these dynamic changes in lighting in a way that is not directly obvious to the naked eye. Otherwise, the lighting might distract people from their work. But it does need to fluctuate enough to promote concentration and heighten alertness.”

Having a slowly changing sky above you should lessen the chance of office lethargy, as the typical fluorescent lights wouldn’t be frying everyone. But the lights might also tease us about our inability to be outside. We might look up and see the LEDs as a depressing reminder that we’re trapped, only strengthening our longing to step outside the building.

Early Facebook investor Peter Thiel unloads majority of his shares

Peter Thiel, one of Facebook's biggest early investors, has sold the majority of his shares in the company, making around $400 million in the process. The move may cause further concern among other investors in the social networking site, who've seen Facebook's stock lose more than half its value since the company went public in May.

One of Facebook’s biggest early investors has sold off the majority of his shares in the company, wasting little time following the expiration of the first lock-up period last Thursday.

According to a Forbes report, Peter Thiel off-loaded 20.06 million of his roughly 25 million shares, netting him somewhere in the region of $400 million. The information was obtained from a Securities and Exchange Commission financial document.

Facebook shares have plummeted in value since the social networking giant went public in May. On Monday, their value dropped below $19, less than half of the $38 launch price.

Despite the fall, Thiel has still made a pretty penny, having invested $500,000 in Facebook in its early days back in 2004, a time when it was still called ‘Thefacebook’.

The end of the first lock-up agreement means early employees and investors holding a combined total of 271 million shares can now sell if they wish to do so, just as Thiel did.

More lock-up agreements will end between now and November, allowing for the potential sale of 1.9 billion shares. In November alone, a further 1.2 billion more shares will become eligible for sale. When that happens, things could go either way for Facebook.

“This date becomes the greatest wildcard,” Brian Wieser of Wall Street research group Pivotal told the Guardian last week. He said much will rest on the social networking site’s next lot of financial results, due in October.

“They may be able to navigate through this. The more they can convince Wall Street of the merits of their story, the more they are likely to generate demand for the shares,” Wieser added.

Concern has been growing among investors about whether the social networking site has the means to generate serious revenue from mobile advertising – an area in which it has so far been struggling to make an impact – with growing numbers of Facebook users turning to handsets and tablets to access the site.
