How Samsung, Microsoft and stupidity are staining Apple’s brand image

Microsoft apple logo samsung

Clever marketing from competitors and its own stumbles have left Apple’s effortlessly cool brand image looking more effortlessly clueless.

I’m at an IBM event this week, and at dinner I had what has been an increasingly frequent experience.

It used to be that attendees at these events gushed about the new Apple gadget they were carrying, and anyone who expressed reservations seemed out of touch with the group. Much like talking about religion or politics from the minority position at the dinner table, bashing Apple was one sure way to ensure everyone thought you were an idiot.

But last night, instead of showing off an Apple device, another guest showed off his new Samsung Galaxy S III phone, which led to more chatter about my new Microsoft Surface tablet. It spiraled into an “everyone dump on Apple” event, and by the end of the evening, Cupertino’s sole defender seemed to be considering other options.

This may be anecdotal, but I’ve seen the same event played out several times recently among analysts and other influencers in the tech space. It makes me think Apple’s image is changing, and the firm’s products are losing their magical edge.

Samsung’s anti-Apple marketing

The blemish on Apple’s spotless image didn’t just appear there; Samsung helped etch it into the glossy white plastic quite intentionally. Its excellent marketing campaign has attacked Apple’s image on three vectors.

The first is questioning Apple’s leadership. Samsung’s ads paint Apple’s “upgrades” as features the company accidentally or intentionally left out of prior products (larger screens, 4G radios), or obvious improvements (headphone jacks on the bottom). In some cases, they also point out where Apple still lags behind the curve after launching a new device, like the lack of NFC in the iPhone 5. Samsung wants to depict itself as the innovator Apple is struggling to match.

Second, the campaign raises the idea that Apple fans aren’t smart consumers. They’re depicted slogging through long lines waiting for their technology, and getting unreasonably excited about aspects of the product that aren’t exciting. In fact, the not-so-subtle message is that Apple buyers are kind of dense.

Samsung Apple commercial iphone 5 samsung galaxy s3Finally the ads build on this dense concept by showcasing Apple users as people you wouldn’t want to emulate: Your parents. Dorks. Clueless hipsters. This is designed to strip away the prestige that Apple products typically carry.

For all its mocking, Samsung actually copied Apple with its first smartphones, but has since diverged, trying to drag away the perceived market leadership with it. The Korean company waged a similar type of warfare on Sony in the television space, which was once the clear leader. Samsung first emulated Sony, then partnered with the company, then took the market away. Sony has never recovered. Granted, Sony had additional issues that complicated things, but the plan worked, and Samsung appears to be following the same playbook with Apple.

Microsoft Surface

Samsung isn’t the only company slinging mud on Apple’s image. The Microsoft Surface tablet is doing relatively well, and Apple’s efforts to disparage it have largely been ineffective (at least so far). It appears to have been designed specifically to make the iPad look wanting in comparison.

As I write this, the Surface is still generating lines, but the important part is it looks both more advanced and more unique than Apple’s offerings. This impression dovetails nicely with Samsung’s efforts, because while the two companies aren’t aligned on products, they are aligned on a common message: Apple’s offerings don’t convey status anymore because they appear to be bought by stupid people.

The too-soon iPad 4 and too-expensive iPad mini

The third leg on this this ugly three-legged stool comes from Apple itself. Its latest launch even showcased an array of different products under one roof, a “big bang” event that trivializes individual products. Firms like Compaq were famous for this approach, but Apple has avoided them like the plague since Steve Jobs returned in the late 90s. Worse, the new iPad made buyers of the old version – launched only back in March – look stupid.

Meanwhile, the iPad mini was priced well out of line with competing models, with inferior specs. When Steve Jobs launched the iPad, it was the lowest priced tablet from a major vendor in its class, and since then, it has remained price competitive against the alternatives. The iPad mini is priced at a 65 percent premium, but lacks the same high-quality displays found on far cheaper competitors. Smart people would probably not buy it as a result. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple discount it significantly once initial demand falls off, leaving early buyers upset and looking stupid yet again.

Destroying Apple’s brand

Apple’s strongest asset is the power of its brand, and the historically valid belief that Apple products are purchased by smart people who are well regarded. This asset is being systematically destroyed, overtly by Samsung, covertly by Microsoft, and stupidly by Apple. Apple is not effectively defending this incredibly valuable asset, and the end result will likely resemble the company that existed before Steve Jobs’ return. That also means a market less dominated by Apple. Since I’m writing this on my Surface Tablet, I’m thinking this may turn out to be a good thing.

1080p Droid DNA tipped for launch at Verizon and HTC’s November 13 event

Droid DNA Leak

HTC and Verizon have sent out invitations to a press event on November 13, where it's rumored to be announcing the Droid DNA, the US version of Japan's J Butterfly smartphone that's equipped with a 5-inch, 1080p display.

Phone fans could be in for a treat next week, as HTC and Verizon have sent out invitations to a press event to be held in New York on November 13, where we could get the first 1080p smartphone/tablet hybrid launched outside Japan.

The invite doesn’t appear to contain any hidden messages, showing nothing more than a lens-flared light on a dark background, but a few leaked press pictures could give us a better idea what these long-time partners are preparing for us.

The images popped up on @evleaks’ Twitter account this week, and show a big-screen, Verizon-branded HTC smartphone that bears a striking resemblance to the HTC J Butterfly.

Quite how such a bizarrely named phone could slip you memory, we’re not sure; but just in case it has, here’s what it’s all about. Announced last month in Japan, the J Butterfly has a 5-inch display with a headline-grabbing 1080p resolution. It seemed inevitable that HTC would let the Butterfly spread its wings at some point, and the Verizon event seems like the ideal launchpad.

Five-inch, full HD touchscreens are set to be the next big thing in the world of the smartphone display, with Sharp’s 1080p IGZO screen making its debut this week, and LG confirming recently that it’s also working on a similar panel.

It’s highly unlikely the J Butterfly name will remain on the US version though, and instead it’s likely to be another “Droid” device, this time the Droid DNA. That name has appeared on both the FCC’s website and a leaked Verizon price list, and has superseded other possible names including the HTC DLX and the HTC X5. Neither of those names are dead though, and could be used for a GSM version of the phone.

If the 5-inch, 1080p screen isn’t enough to get your pulse racing, then should the Droid DNA share the J Butterfly’s other features, it will also have Qualcomm’s high performance, 1.5GHz, quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, plus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as its operating system.

Previous leaks have suggested a December 6 release date for the phone, but we’ll have to wait for the November 13 event to confirm this, and all the other details concerning HTC and Verizon’s new device.

Amazon attacks Apple on its homepage, compares the Kindle Fire HD to the iPad Mini

The 7-inch tablet wars just got serious. After the Nexus 7 got compared (in what I think were less than key areas) to the iPad Mini at the Apple’s event last week, now Amazon has flexed its muscle, pitting its Kindle Fire HD against the iPad Mini on its very homepage.

The online retailer has put up a big ad right on its homepage saying “Much more for much less” and made a comparison of its own 7-inch Kindle Fire HD against the iPad Mini, highlighting the display resolution, pixels per inch and most importantly – the price.

Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos looks eager not to allow Apple to steal its thunder right before the holiday Christmas season and, as demonstrated above, is prepared to do what it takes. Samsung did a similar trick with its Tab series of tablets once highlighting how its products compare to to the Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble’s tablets, and later against the iPad 3

Google had hoped to take the tech world by storm on Monday with its Android event, but a storm is now taking the event.

As a result of Hurricane Sandy, Google cancelled its big Android event, which was set to be held in New York City at 9:00 a.m. Monday. The effects of the hurricane are expected to be felt in the New York City area as early as Monday morning. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has already declared a state of emergency, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned residents to brace themselves.

At the event, Google was expected to detail the next version of Android, codenamed Key Lime Pie. It has also been rumored that it would announce a new Nexus phone made by LG and a new Nexus 10 tablet made by Samsung.

Google has not yet shared details on when or where they will hold the rescheduled event.

“We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more,” Google said in an e-mail to ABC News.

Google’s event was planned to compete with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event taking place in San Francisco the same day.

Android chief Andy Rubin is still expected to speak at the All Things D “Dive Into Mobile” conference in New York City on Monday afternoon. ABC News still plans to attend the conference and report on the news.

Tim Cook tells Apple’s story so far – in numbers

Apple CEO Tim Cook rolled out some big product-related numbers prior to the announcement of new and refreshed hardware at Tuesday's special event in San Jose, California.

An Apple event wouldn’t be an Apple event without its CEO first trotting out some product-related stats.

At the Californian Theatre in San Francisco on Tuesday morning, prior to the unveiling of the iPad Mini, as well as news of updates to other Apple products, Tim Cook took to the stage to let everyone know what everyone already knew – that things are going pretty well for the Cupertino-based tech titan.

Cook kicked off proceedings by confirming that, indeed, the iPhone 5 is the fastest-selling iPhone among its six iterations in its five-year history, selling 5 million units in its first weekend of sales in September.

Last month also saw the introduction of a new iPod Touch and Nano, selling alongside the Shuffle and Classic models. Cook said the company has sold 3 million iPods since its last special event on September 12.

As for iOS 6, also released in September, 200 million mobile devices are now running the new operating system, with Cook describing it as the “fastest upgrade rate in history.”

Apple’s iCloud service, which allows users to store their music and other content on the company’s servers and access it from any of their Apple machines or devices, appears to be garnering interest, with 125 million documents now stored remotely using the service.

Cook said 300 billion messages have been sent using iMessage, or 28,000 per second. “Maybe even more now,” the Apple boss quipped just prior to the unveiling of the iPad Mini.

Game Center, which makes it easy for gamers to share scores and compete against each other, has seen the creation of 160 million accounts, while 70 million images have been shared using the new shared photo streams feature launched with iOS just a month ago.

Turning to the app store, Cook said there are now 700,000 apps on sale in the store, including 275,000 for the iPad. “These [iPad apps] are not stretched out smartphone apps,” Cook was keen to point out, adding, “These are apps that have been custom designed to take advantage of iPad’s big beautiful canvas.” The app store has now seen 35 billion downloads since it opened for business back in 2008, with a total of $6.5 billion paid to developers in that time.

As for iBooks, Cook said over 1.5 million books are now available through its online store, with downloads exceeding the 400 million mark.

Leading up to the launch of the smaller iPad, the Apple boss said that two weeks ago the company sold its 100 millionth iPad – not bad going for a product that’s been on the market less than three years.

According to Apple, iPad currently accounts for 91 percent of web traffic share involving tablets, while 94 percent of companies in the Fortune 500 are now testing or deploying the iPad.

It’s going to be interesting to see what stats the company pulls up about the iPad Mini at its next special event. Are more superlatives on the way?

Microsoft launches four new Windows 8 video ads, warming up for October 26

Microsoft doesn’t seem to be bothered by Apple’s huge event today and went on releasing four new ads for Windows 8.

The video ads are global and are going to be aired in 42 countries joined by printed ads, outdoor posters as well as their online counterparts to help boost user awareness and quick adoption of Microsoft’s latest computer OS.

The advertising agency responsible for the videos is Crispin, Porter and Bogusky and here’s what the agency’s Chief Creative Director Rob Reilly had to say about the ads.

We selected music from up and coming bands. We didn’t want to use overly popular songs because we wanted to bring the viewer on a journey of discovery, both through the storytelling and the music that accompanies these stories. Sometimes, as in “Express Yourself,” by Labrinth we found a new take on a classic old song, much like the reinvention of Windows.

Enough chit-chat, let’s get on with the videos.

Windows 8: Best Coast

Windows 8: Parkour

Windows 8: You and Me Together

Windows 8: Party

Microsoft will be officially launching what is undoubtedly its most bold Windows release in its history on October 26, so mark your calendars.

Apple to offer live stream for its iPad mini event tonight

As a welcome break of tradition, Apple is going to offer live streaming of its iPad mini event tonight. The company will let you become a part of the unveiling of its latest product through its web site or, if you happen to own one, through Apple TV.

As you probably know by now, Apple is going to hold an event, which starts tonight at 17:00 GMT and should see the introduction of the first 7.85” iOS tablet, probably called iPad mini. Sporting a more compact design and a more attractive price tag than its larger sibling, the iPad mini should help iOS get an even firmer grasp of the tablet market.

Google’s “Playground is open” event: What will be revealed October 29

Google always seems to have something up its sleeve, but at least some of its cards are already turned. The company's October 29 event looks like it will reveal a refresh to the Nexus 7, a 10-inch tablet, the LG Nexus 4, and a new installment of the Android OS.

The month of October appears to be “steal your competitor’s spotlight” month, with almost every major mobile company participating in press conference one-upmanship. Trying to get the last word in before the month closes is Google, with an unveil that is scheduled for the same day as Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event. Google is tagging its event with the phrase, “the playground is open,” and will likely have a lot of hands on available for attendees. October 29 will be a busy day, so here’s a cheat sheet of what to expect from the search engine turned major mobile player.

Nexus 7

As many expected, the Nexus 7 will be one of the stars of the show with a 32GB model.  It appears that may not be the only change to the internals on seven inch tablet, as a 32GB with HSPA+ (3G) support is expected by some sources. This likely won’t be the Asus manufactured $100 model that was previously rumored, but the Nexus has been a leader in the budget-friendly tablet category.

10-inch Samsung-made Tablet

Hiding behind the internal alias of Codename Manta is a 10″ tablet manufactured by Samsung. This project has been the source of rumors for the past month, and it looks as though it may be confirmed at the October 29 event. According to sources reported on by The Next Web, the taller tablet will feature 300 pixels per inch spread across a 2560 x 1600 resolution display. The third generation iPad has 264ppi by comparison. The 10-inch device is also said to come running Android 4.2.

LG Nexus 4

While the handset has been cycling around the rumor mill for the Google event, it appears the LG Nexus 4 has RSVPed. The smartphone will be made by LG and will run with a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor. That, along with 2GB RAM, will power the 4.7 inch device and its 1280×768 display. The device will also sport a 8-megapixel rear-facing and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and 16GB of on-board storage. The Nexus 4, like the 10-inch Samsung tablet, is believed to run Android 4.2.

Android 4.2

The operating system formally know as Key Lime Pie will likely retain the Jelly Bean title of Android 4.1. The OS appears as though it will go at iOS 6 head on by including a panoramic camera feature with support for both vertical and horizontal settings. It will also aim to surpass its competitor with a feature called “content in the center,” which will allow for Play Store access from a widget. Tablet Sharing will also be introduced, essentially creating profiles for tablets that are used by multiple people.

Steve Jobs return in another epic rap, this time about the iPad mini

A hotly anticipated Apple event will take place later today and the rumor mill is adamant that the star of the show will be the iPad mini. We’ve seen a long, LONG stream of leaks of just about every component of the iPad mini, so let’s unwind with a bit of lighthearted humor before the big event begins.

First, there’s an animated music video that tells the story of the creation of the iPad mini and features a couple of surprising cameos.

In case you missed it, the same people behind this video also made an iPhone 5 parody (where you can see the Steve Jobs rap that the video above refers to).

Then is a mock promo video, which asks a legitimate question – where does the iPad mini fit between the full-size iPad and iPhone/iPod touch.

Jokes aside, we’ll be covering the Apple event (it starts at 6pm GMT / 10am PDT), so make sure to check back with us for info on the iPad mini – and anything else Apple might announce (a 13″ MacBook Pro with Retina display and new Mac Minis are also likely attendees).

LG executive tips Nexus 4 for October 29 release

LG Nexus 4 Leak

An LG executive has seemingly confirmed that the Nexus 4 will be revealed at Google's October 29 event, and that it will be ready for release almost straight away.

An LG executive has revealed in an interview that the company’s first Google Nexus smartphone will be revealed on October 29, at Google’s already announced event.

It was during an interview with IBNLive.in that Amit Gujral, LG’s head of Mobile Product Planning, let slip that yes, the Nexus 4 is real and it’s coming very soon. He’s quoted as saying “Google will unveil the LG Nexus on October 29,” before adding that the new phone would be available in India before the end of November.

If Gujral’s timing is correct, it’s likely the Nexus 4 will be ready for an international rollout almost immediately after the October 29 event. India is an important mobile market, but Google and LG will probably release the new phone in the US and Europe a little before it appears there.

He also mentions some of the same spec details we’ve already heard, such as the phone having a 4.7-inch display, a 1.5GHz processor and version 4.2 of the Android operating system. He didn’t talk about the resolution or the camera, but previous rumors have put them at 1280 x 768 and 8-megapixels respectively.

The October 29 release date was mooted at the start of the month by the French newspaper Le Figaro too, stating it would begin its worldwide release on that date, and that France would be seeing the phone in December. It’ll be a surprise if France takes the new Nexus after India though.

LG’s Nexus 4 isn’t the only new device expected to appear at Google’s event, as a playground with only one thing to play with would be a slightly sad place. Other possibilities include a 32GB Nexus 7 tablet with cellular connectivity, plus a 10-inch-plus Nexus tablet, possibly built by Samsung, with an iPad-beating resolution.

Google’s event kicks off at 10am in New York on October 29.

What’s in store? Google to hold Android event in New York on October 29

Another day, another 'special event' announcement from a tech giant. This time it's Google, with an event planned for Monday in New York. Details unknown.

Not content with allowing Apple and Microsoft to hog the limelight in the coming days – with the former expected to unveil the iPad Mini and the latter launching the Surface tablet – Google has just piped up to let everyone know it’ll be holding an event of its own at Basketball City in New York at 10am on Monday October 29. October 29? Microsoft happens to be holding a Windows Phone 8 event on that day. Is this significant?

Google’s invite reads “the playground is open”, although, as is often the case with tech companies and their special events, there’s no concrete information about what’ll be happening.

It might involve the covers coming off the next-generation Nexus handset; it could be about a new 32GB version of the Nexus 7 tablet; it may be something to do with a new cut-price Nexus tablet, or a high-end 10.1-inch device; it might be about updates to its Android operating system; it could have something to do with the Google Play app store; it may be about to open a chain of children’s playgrounds across the country (unlikely). It’s possible it’ll be about all or none of these things. Or simply some.

If you’d like to watch the event live, Google will be streaming it here. And of course, we’ll be bringing you the news as it happens.

Apple finally sends out invitations for the Oct. 23 event, the iPad mini allmost certain

Apple just started spreading their invitations to their previously rumored event on October 23. The invite tagline is “We’ve got a little more to show you” and the word little may be used quite literally, as Apple is supposed to unveil the iPad mini at this event.

Other rumors claim Apple may be demonstrating a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina screen as well.

We already saw numerous leaks of what the iPad mini is supposed to look like. The latest one shows the dummies, which Chinese accessory manufacturers use to prepare for their announcement of the Apple’s product.

I remind you we recently got a pretty convincing iPad mini price leak, too. Well, there’s only a week left till the event, so we’ll hear the real announcements from Apple execs themselves.

Thanks for the heads-up, Sasika!

Apple’s iPad Mini Could Now Be Announced Oct. 23

gty ipad nt 120210 wblog Apples iPad Mini Could Now Be Announced Oct. 23

The original iPad and the iPad 2. Credit: Getty

We warned you of the forthcoming October tech bonanza.

While Fortune had predicted that Apple would hold an event on Oct. 17 to announce its new iPad Mini, with invites going out to reporters Oct. 10, there’s now a new rumored date: Oct 23. AllThingsD, a technology website with a very good track record when it comes to reporting on Apple, says the company will reveal the smaller iPad, or iPad Mini, to the media at an invitation-only event in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Oct. 23 certainly makes more sense for a number of reasons. First, Apple hasn’t yet sent out official invites, making it too soon for an Oct. 17 date. Second, Microsoft is launching Windows 8 and its own Surface tablet later in the week on Oct. 26. Additionally, Apple’s earnings release is on Oct. 25, and the company would likely prefer to announce the new tablet before that date.

Rumors have been swirling about the smaller iPad for months now. It has been said that it will have a 7.85-inch screen, the same Lightning Dock Connector as the new iPhone 5, and 3G/4G cellular connectivity. Some images of the tablet have been leaked, and The Wall Street Journal reported a few weeks ago that mass production of the smaller tablet had begun.

Last month Amazon released its new Kindle Fire HD, which starts at $199. Similarly, Google and Asus launched the Nexus 7 in June for $199. Barnes & Noble released the Nook HD two weeks ago, which — you guessed it — starts at $199. There have been no reports on the pricing of the iPad Mini.

Apple has declined to comment to ABC News on any of the iPad Mini rumors that have circulated over the past few months, but if the latest rumor is true, it looks as if we’ll have much more than a comment from Apple soon.

Samsung boss confirms the Galaxy S3 Mini is coming on October 11

JK Shin Samsung Galaxy S3

According to Samsung's JK Shin, the company will announce the Galaxy S3 Mini at an event in Frankfurt on October 11.

Last week, an invitation to a special Samsung event did the rounds, but rather than the company’s usual Unpacked logo and glitzy location, it was written in German and the event itself was to be held in Samsung’s own store in Frankfurt. The slogan across the top of the document was translated into English, and found to say “ So big can be small. And so small can be big,” or words to that effect, plus there was a familiar “S” logo in the background too.

This was all taken to be proof of a Galaxy S3 Mini device, and that Samsung was preparing it for launch at the October 11 event. Now, with a day to go until the mysterious event, Samsung’s Mobile Communications boss, JK Shin, has spilled the beans in a chat with the Korean press.

He appears to have confirmed that the event is indeed for a Galaxy S3 Mini, with TheVerge.com translating the article and finding these words “We’ll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S3 on the 11th in Germany,” and adding that “there’s a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it ‘mini.’”

You can read the Korean report here, but Google Translate doesn’t do as good a job as whoever translated for TheVerge.com.

Leaked specs recall the Galaxy S Advance

This isn’t the first we’re hearing of the Galaxy S3 Mini though, as it has previously been leaked after it was spotted in T-Mobile Netherlands computer system, where it was listed as having a 4-inch screen with an 800 x 480 pixel resolution, a 5-megapixel camera and a 1GHz, dual-core processor. Sammobile.com also repeated these specs in its own leak, and added a possible 250 euro/$320 price tag for good measure.

While this spec list is a considerable step down from the Galaxy S3 we’re already familiar with, that low-end price tag is less than half the cost of the full-size model, potentially pitting the S3 Mini up against Apple’s cheaper iPhone 4S, and leaving the iPhone 5 to its big brother.

The only thing is, the above specification is almost identical to the Galaxy S Advance, a re-worked version of the original Galaxy S which was released earlier this year. Could Samsung be taking the S Advance’s internals and popping them inside an S3-style body, purely to pull the range together and make it easier for the marketing folk? If so, that could explain why it’s not making a big deal over the S3 Mini’s release.

Whatever happens, we’ll find out tomorrow, October 11, when Samsung unveils something small in Frankfurt.

Amazon releases video explaining Kindle’s Paperwhite technology

The new Kindle Paperwhite was hailed as being the best e-ink display on the market by Amazon during their release event for the latest generation of eBook readers last month.

Amazon have since released a video explaining the technology behind Paperwhite, which was reportedly 8 years in the making.

The biggest advantage that Paperwhite achieves is illuminating down towards the screen rather than up towards your eyes. How do they achieve this? Take a look:

By basically creating a fiber-optic sheet, the engineers at behind the new Kindle were able to direct light downwards onto the display, thus making for a less strenuous reading experience.

The typeface optimizations and great battery performance should make the Kindle Paperwhite a great hit when it goes on sale this Monday.

At $119 for Wi-Fi only and $179 for the 3G model, will you be getting a Kindle Paperwhite?
