Hands on with HTC’s Windows Phone 8S

We take the Windows Phone 8S by HTC a test ride. Though it runs on lower-end specs, this T-Mobile phone appears to still pack a punch.

Though its often most fun to write about the fanciest and most expensive smartphones on the market, not everyone can afford them Luckily, there are a growing class of 2nd tier phones that still manage to provide a competitive experience. During my time with the Windows Phone 8S by HTC, it appears to be just such a device. The 8S has 4GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM, and a 5-megapixel rear camera, but its 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor is no slouch. I’m also a fan of its 4-inch 800 x 480 pixel screen. The resolution isn’t high and the RAM isn’t plentiful, but the phone appears to run Windows Phone 8 quite responsively. Overall, it should have a slight edge over many Windows Phone 7.5 devices on the market today. And hey, it comes in a number of pretty colors. T-Mobile will be carrying the 8S in the coming weeks.

Holiday TV sales: Why October is the best month to buy

Holiday-TV-sales-Why-October-is-the-best-month-to-buy

A recent report suggests that October is the prime time to buy that new TV. Check out our guide to the best TVs out there - and snag yourself a good deal.

Anyone who’s done a bit of shopping in the last week or so was probably confronted with the reality that the holiday season, like it or not, is once again being thrust upon us. It’s not even Halloween yet and Christmas decorations are already dominated retail stores across the country. Can’t we have some Halloween candy before we have to start thinking about holiday gift buying?

No, unfortunately, we can’t – not if we want to get the best stuff at the best price, anyway. A recent report issued by the Wall Street Journal — which took up to six years worth of holiday pricing data into account — indicates that prices on many hot-ticket items, including TVs, actually rise the closer we get to Christmas. In fact that same report shows us that the best holiday-season time to buy a TV is – dig this – right now, in October.

With that in mind, we urge you to start getting serious about some decision-making if you’ve been planning to put a TV under the tree this year. To help you along, we’ve assembled a short-list of top-performing TVs that we found at great prices from online retailers. Happy Holidays, already.

Please note: Due to the highly dynamic nature of online retailing, pricing and availability of the models listed below is likely to change. When possible, we will update our list to reflect those changes, but it is always best to check retailers on a day-to-day basis.

Panasonic ST50 tv buying guidePanasonic ST50 series 3D Plasma TV

If Panasonic’s ST50 series isn’t on your short-list already, then you need to do some more research. This is, by far, one of the best performing, high-value TVs on the market this year. When it comes to picture quality, this is the model to beat. You can pay more, but you will get less. You can read our review for more juicy details, or you can take us at our word and head to Amazon to pick up the 50-inch for $1050 or the 55-inch for $1250 right now.

Samsung PNE6500 holiday buying guide tvSamsung PNE6500 series Plasma TV

This Plasma series from Samsung runs a very close second to Panasonic’s ST50 series in terms of both picture quality and price. One notable Samsung advantage, however, is its Smart Hub Internet apps interface, which stands as one of our favorites for accessing online video content. Check our our Samsung PN60E6500 Review.

Panasonic UT50 holiday tv buying guide

Panasonic UT50 series 3D Plasma TV

Another Panasonic? Yes. While the UT50 series doesn’t offer a picture quite as refined as its more expensive ST-50 series cousins, it wins the bang-for-your-buck award hands down. Right now, we’re seeing the 50-incher going for as little as $830 and the 60-inch model for around $1300.

LG LM7600 holiday tv buying guide

LG LM7600 series 3D LED/LCD TV

The LG LM6700 series was what we originally had in mind for this pick, but the model is getting harder and harder to find. Plus, since the year is winding down, so are the prices for the step-up LM6700 series. That makes the LM7600 a shoe-in with its stunning design, dazzlingly bright picture, and six pair of 3D glasses included free. LG’s Magic Motion remote is a lot of fun, too. $1470 gets you the 55-inch model at Amazon right now.

Vizio E322AR holiday tv buying guideVizio E322AR 32-inch LED TV

Need a TV for the bedroom, kids’ room, or bonus room? We think this 32-incher is the ticket. It packs plenty of Internet apps and built-in Wi-Fi. For around $300 at most retailers, this is a hard one to pass up. Need to go razor thin? Check out the Vizio M320SL for $100 more.

Vizio E601i-A3 holiday tv buying guideVizio E601i-A3 60-inch LED Smart TV

That a 60-inch LED TV loaded with Internet apps and built-in Wi-Fi can be had for under $1000 seems almost too good to be true, but we’re here to tell you this TV from Vizio is no joke — just be sure to turn off the motion smoothing feature as soon as you get it plugged in. The picture quality isn’t as solid as our next Vizio entry, but if you’re looking to gain inches without shedding dollars, this model will do it. It’s in stock at Costco and Amazon.

Vizio M650VSE holiday tv buying guideVizio M650VSE 65-inch

Yeah… Vizio got all serious with its holiday pricing this year. As a result, it gets three mentions on our list. This year, the manufacturer outdoes itself with a solid-performing 65-inch, ultra-thin, LED TV available for $1500 at Costco and Amazon. If you must have 3D, dig down deep in your pockets for another $300 and grab yourself the 3D-capable M3D650SV.

Sony HX850 holiday tv buying guideSony HX850 LED Smart TV

Sony’s HX850 series costs more dollars per inch than any other TV on our list, but it earns a place here because it is the best-performing LED television we’ve seen this year and the price has been cut down significantly. The 55-inch version is going for $2000 at a number of popular retailers. Better get on this one while the getting’s good.

Google’s “Playground is open” event: What will be revealed October 29

Google always seems to have something up its sleeve, but at least some of its cards are already turned. The company's October 29 event looks like it will reveal a refresh to the Nexus 7, a 10-inch tablet, the LG Nexus 4, and a new installment of the Android OS.

The month of October appears to be “steal your competitor’s spotlight” month, with almost every major mobile company participating in press conference one-upmanship. Trying to get the last word in before the month closes is Google, with an unveil that is scheduled for the same day as Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event. Google is tagging its event with the phrase, “the playground is open,” and will likely have a lot of hands on available for attendees. October 29 will be a busy day, so here’s a cheat sheet of what to expect from the search engine turned major mobile player.

Nexus 7

As many expected, the Nexus 7 will be one of the stars of the show with a 32GB model.  It appears that may not be the only change to the internals on seven inch tablet, as a 32GB with HSPA+ (3G) support is expected by some sources. This likely won’t be the Asus manufactured $100 model that was previously rumored, but the Nexus has been a leader in the budget-friendly tablet category.

10-inch Samsung-made Tablet

Hiding behind the internal alias of Codename Manta is a 10″ tablet manufactured by Samsung. This project has been the source of rumors for the past month, and it looks as though it may be confirmed at the October 29 event. According to sources reported on by The Next Web, the taller tablet will feature 300 pixels per inch spread across a 2560 x 1600 resolution display. The third generation iPad has 264ppi by comparison. The 10-inch device is also said to come running Android 4.2.

LG Nexus 4

While the handset has been cycling around the rumor mill for the Google event, it appears the LG Nexus 4 has RSVPed. The smartphone will be made by LG and will run with a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor. That, along with 2GB RAM, will power the 4.7 inch device and its 1280×768 display. The device will also sport a 8-megapixel rear-facing and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and 16GB of on-board storage. The Nexus 4, like the 10-inch Samsung tablet, is believed to run Android 4.2.

Android 4.2

The operating system formally know as Key Lime Pie will likely retain the Jelly Bean title of Android 4.1. The OS appears as though it will go at iOS 6 head on by including a panoramic camera feature with support for both vertical and horizontal settings. It will also aim to surpass its competitor with a feature called “content in the center,” which will allow for Play Store access from a widget. Tablet Sharing will also be introduced, essentially creating profiles for tablets that are used by multiple people.

LG executive tips Nexus 4 for October 29 release

LG Nexus 4 Leak

An LG executive has seemingly confirmed that the Nexus 4 will be revealed at Google's October 29 event, and that it will be ready for release almost straight away.

An LG executive has revealed in an interview that the company’s first Google Nexus smartphone will be revealed on October 29, at Google’s already announced event.

It was during an interview with IBNLive.in that Amit Gujral, LG’s head of Mobile Product Planning, let slip that yes, the Nexus 4 is real and it’s coming very soon. He’s quoted as saying “Google will unveil the LG Nexus on October 29,” before adding that the new phone would be available in India before the end of November.

If Gujral’s timing is correct, it’s likely the Nexus 4 will be ready for an international rollout almost immediately after the October 29 event. India is an important mobile market, but Google and LG will probably release the new phone in the US and Europe a little before it appears there.

He also mentions some of the same spec details we’ve already heard, such as the phone having a 4.7-inch display, a 1.5GHz processor and version 4.2 of the Android operating system. He didn’t talk about the resolution or the camera, but previous rumors have put them at 1280 x 768 and 8-megapixels respectively.

The October 29 release date was mooted at the start of the month by the French newspaper Le Figaro too, stating it would begin its worldwide release on that date, and that France would be seeing the phone in December. It’ll be a surprise if France takes the new Nexus after India though.

LG’s Nexus 4 isn’t the only new device expected to appear at Google’s event, as a playground with only one thing to play with would be a slightly sad place. Other possibilities include a 32GB Nexus 7 tablet with cellular connectivity, plus a 10-inch-plus Nexus tablet, possibly built by Samsung, with an iPad-beating resolution.

Google’s event kicks off at 10am in New York on October 29.

Apple finally sends out invitations for the Oct. 23 event, the iPad mini allmost certain

Apple just started spreading their invitations to their previously rumored event on October 23. The invite tagline is “We’ve got a little more to show you” and the word little may be used quite literally, as Apple is supposed to unveil the iPad mini at this event.

Other rumors claim Apple may be demonstrating a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina screen as well.

We already saw numerous leaks of what the iPad mini is supposed to look like. The latest one shows the dummies, which Chinese accessory manufacturers use to prepare for their announcement of the Apple’s product.

I remind you we recently got a pretty convincing iPad mini price leak, too. Well, there’s only a week left till the event, so we’ll hear the real announcements from Apple execs themselves.

Thanks for the heads-up, Sasika!

Apple’s ‘mini’ event rumors: New Mac mini, 13″ Retina MacBook Pro, and iPad Mini

We do our best to follow all of the latest Apple October 23rd rumors, including a new Mac mini, a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, and the iPad mini.

This week is off to a flying start with several Apple rumors already “confirmed,” including new Mac minis, a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display, a curvy iMac, and an iPad Mini price list for good measure. All of these products are rumored to be announced at a press conference many think will happen on Oct. 23rd. From the looks of it, Apple may announce a number of smaller, ‘mini’ products at the event

New Mac Mini’s coming

New 2011 Mac Mini top

Big fan of Apple’s tiny little Mac? You’re in luck. A new rumor from 9t05Mac points to new versions of the Mac mini rearing their adorable little heads at Apple’s rumored October 23rd event. Supposedly, the new Macs will come in two configurations, with varying memory and processor options as well as a third model for those who want to run OS X Server. Rumor has it that they’ll start shipping immediately after the announcement. Apple hasn’t updated the Mac mini in more than a year.

We assume that the new mini will get some form of visual refresh, but it’s hard to imagine Apple making it a whole lot smaller than it already is. Maybe we’ll get a Mac micro?

13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display

9to5Mac has also heard from a “consistently reliable source” that Apple will introduced a Retina display-equipped 13-inch MacBook Pro during the iPad Mini’s launch event later this month. It will apparently be thinner and lighter, and offer different combinations of processors and storage options too.

Macrumors.com has found a few potential features for the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro on a Chinese website, which claims the smaller computer will still have two Thunderbolt ports, a USB port, a headphone socket, an HDMI-out and an SD card reader; just like its bigger brother. There’s also talk of an interesting battery design — although it’s not elaborated upon — and the report is accompanied by a couple of pictures that, frankly, could show absolutely anything.

Before we move on, it’s best to clarify that we’re talking about a product that doesn’t exist being launched at an event that hasn’t been announced for another non-existent product. That said, it’s logical for Apple to produce a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, but at the moment we don’t know when that will happen.

A curvy iMac

The curvy iMac rumors seems to originate from the same Chinese website, where it’s said that the new model will have a curved shell that’s something like “a water droplet,” which sounds more like Samsung’s design philosophy than Apple’s. Naturally, it too is going to arrive at the small “intimate” event apparently set for October 23.

iPad Mini prices

Finally, we’re onto the event’s main attraction, the iPad Mini. A picture supposedly showing a list of iPad Minis that will possibly be stocked by German electronics retailer MediaMarkt has been leaked, complete with prices and basic specs. In addition to the usual 16, 32 and 64GB models, an 8GB iPad Mini may appear. Each version will have the choice of a black or white finish, and either Wi-Fi only or “cellular” and Wi-Fi.

The most basic 8GB Wi-Fi iPad Mini is priced at 250 euros, and the top 64GB Wi-Fi with 3G or 4G at 650 euros. A quick currency conversion gives us $322 and $840 respectively, the latter of which will probably have seen wallets everywhere twitch nervously.

Just like all the other iPad Mini rumors, there’s no way to know if this is really a screenshot from MediaMarkt’s computer system, and equally we can’t take those prices as final either, as Apple’s US pricing is often lower than it’s European equivalent.

October 23 is one week away tomorrow, which means that if an event is to take place, Apple will start to send invitations out very soon. We really, really hope it does too; if only to put an end to these infernal iPad Mini rumors.

Update 10/16/2012 by Jeffrey VC: Rumors of a Mac mini announcement have surfaced and have been added to the list.

Microsoft Surface RT pricing and availability surfaces, goes after the iPad

A slip-up at the Microsoft online store has finally lead to the unveiling of the Surface tablet’s pricing. Scheduled to hit store on October 26, the pricing of the Microsoft Surface starts from $500 without the cool Black Touch Cover with keyboard.

However, chances are that you’ll want the cool accessory, which basically transforms the Surface into a fully-fledged notebook replacement. In that case, you’ll need to shell out $600. Both prices apply for the 32GB version of the slate.

The 64GB variation is priced at $700 with the Black Touch Cover included. The Touch Cover is also available for purchase separately for $120 a pop and comes in red, black, white, blue or purple. There’s also the Type Cover retailing for $130, but that’s only available in black.

Unfortunately, the listing on the Microsoft online store isn’t available any longer.

With the Surface’s advertisements already showing on TV and all over the Internet, and rocking the same price as the iPad 3 (32GB), Microsoft’s slate is ready for a fight in the upcoming holiday season.

Apple’s iPad Mini Could Now Be Announced Oct. 23

gty ipad nt 120210 wblog Apples iPad Mini Could Now Be Announced Oct. 23

The original iPad and the iPad 2. Credit: Getty

We warned you of the forthcoming October tech bonanza.

While Fortune had predicted that Apple would hold an event on Oct. 17 to announce its new iPad Mini, with invites going out to reporters Oct. 10, there’s now a new rumored date: Oct 23. AllThingsD, a technology website with a very good track record when it comes to reporting on Apple, says the company will reveal the smaller iPad, or iPad Mini, to the media at an invitation-only event in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Oct. 23 certainly makes more sense for a number of reasons. First, Apple hasn’t yet sent out official invites, making it too soon for an Oct. 17 date. Second, Microsoft is launching Windows 8 and its own Surface tablet later in the week on Oct. 26. Additionally, Apple’s earnings release is on Oct. 25, and the company would likely prefer to announce the new tablet before that date.

Rumors have been swirling about the smaller iPad for months now. It has been said that it will have a 7.85-inch screen, the same Lightning Dock Connector as the new iPhone 5, and 3G/4G cellular connectivity. Some images of the tablet have been leaked, and The Wall Street Journal reported a few weeks ago that mass production of the smaller tablet had begun.

Last month Amazon released its new Kindle Fire HD, which starts at $199. Similarly, Google and Asus launched the Nexus 7 in June for $199. Barnes & Noble released the Nook HD two weeks ago, which — you guessed it — starts at $199. There have been no reports on the pricing of the iPad Mini.

Apple has declined to comment to ABC News on any of the iPad Mini rumors that have circulated over the past few months, but if the latest rumor is true, it looks as if we’ll have much more than a comment from Apple soon.

No, really this time, the iPad Mini is coming on October 23

This week, the iPad Mini is rumored to be launching on October 23, just a few days before Microsoft will fully reveal its Surface tablets.

Now it’s October 12, and no iPad Mini invitations have fallen on to expectant doormats, it’s safe to say the Bigfoot of the tech world still isn’t quite ready to make its debut, despite the last rumor on the subject. If indeed, it ever was.

Since then, there has been talk of the tablet entering production, experiencing problems, and of Apple ordering 10 million units. All this without anyone setting eyes on the thing.

Not to worry though, you can leave the disappointment of October 10 behind and concentrate instead on October 23, as according to AllThingsD’s sources — unnamed, naturally — that’s the real date for the iPad Mini’s unveiling. Apple usually likes to distribute invitations to events a week or so before they take place, so they could begin to appear next Tuesday, October 16.

As the world has done a solid job of promoting the iPad Mini for Apple over the last months (and no, the irony of this statement hasn’t been lost on me), the company will save its money and won’t be inviting the Foo Fighters to return, or even bothering to pop down to the Yerba Buena Center, as the event will be “an intimate affair held close to home.”

Let’s take a moment and say that the iPad Mini is real, and that it will be unveiled on October 23. This is about as close as Apple would dare get to Microsoft’s Windows 8 event, stopping short of erecting a marquee outside Pier 57 on the big day and launching it there.

Microsoft’s Surface tablets are expected to be one of the day’s major subjects, where we’ll finally get to know how much they’ll cost, all ready for a midnight launch. The furore caused by an iPad Mini announcement certainly wouldn’t assist in Microsoft’s quest for column inches or tablet sales.

Right, now you can go back to the iPad Mini being just a rumor. Until October 23. Possibly.

LG’s Nexus 4 smartphone rumored for release on October 29

LG Nexus 4 Leak

LG is rumored to be preparing a Google Nexus smartphone, and it could be released as soon as October 29.

LG is one of the manufacturers believed to be producing a Nexus phone for Google, potentially under the name of the Nexus 4, Nexus G or Nexus X. Now, French newspaper Le Figaro has published a report saying the device will be released on October 29.

The article doesn’t provide the source of this information, but claims this will be the worldwide release, while France will be introduced to the phone in December. It’s referred to as the Nexus 4 throughout, a name which has been circulating since it was discovered in UK retailer Carphone Warehouse’s computer system.

Leaks of the LG Nexus phone have shown it to be similar in specification to the Optimus G, meaning it will have that monster quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a 4.7-inch, 1280 x 768 pixel resolution display and an 8-megapixel camera. This would represent a major alteration over the Optimus G, which has a 13-megapixel camera.

A supposed prototype of the Nexus 4 showed up in a series of pictures on the XDA-developers.com forums earlier this week, when it was shown to run Android Jelly Bean, but the version number wasn’t stated. Today, the device has appeared on a Russian website, which confirms all the above specifications, and publishes some new images.

October 29?

Leaving the feature list aside, let’s take a moment to consider that release date. October 29 is also the day that Microsoft will formally announce Windows Phone 8, so would Google really want to take on Microsoft in a battle for headlines on the same day? It’s not about who gets the most, remember, it’s about gaining the best coverage, and competing that way would be strange considering it has 364 other days from which to choose.

That said, if Google is gearing up to launch a host of new Nexus devices — from LG, Samsung, HTC and Motorola — then perhaps it will decide to go head-to-head with Microsoft, as all its hardware has already been revealed. It’s also not all that clear whether the article claims October 29 will be the release date or the date of the announcement. Either way, it’s still going to have to deal with Microsoft.

Then there is the question of the Optimus G, as if LG’s Nexus phone is based on the company’s new flagship — which comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich — then it may not want it on the streets beforehand either. The Optimus G is still waiting for its final release date, and rumors include a November date for the US and a December or early 2013 date for Europe and the UK. Any Optimus G-based LG Nexus phone may have to patiently wait its turn.

Samsung boss confirms the Galaxy S3 Mini is coming on October 11

JK Shin Samsung Galaxy S3

According to Samsung's JK Shin, the company will announce the Galaxy S3 Mini at an event in Frankfurt on October 11.

Last week, an invitation to a special Samsung event did the rounds, but rather than the company’s usual Unpacked logo and glitzy location, it was written in German and the event itself was to be held in Samsung’s own store in Frankfurt. The slogan across the top of the document was translated into English, and found to say “ So big can be small. And so small can be big,” or words to that effect, plus there was a familiar “S” logo in the background too.

This was all taken to be proof of a Galaxy S3 Mini device, and that Samsung was preparing it for launch at the October 11 event. Now, with a day to go until the mysterious event, Samsung’s Mobile Communications boss, JK Shin, has spilled the beans in a chat with the Korean press.

He appears to have confirmed that the event is indeed for a Galaxy S3 Mini, with TheVerge.com translating the article and finding these words “We’ll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S3 on the 11th in Germany,” and adding that “there’s a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it ‘mini.’”

You can read the Korean report here, but Google Translate doesn’t do as good a job as whoever translated for TheVerge.com.

Leaked specs recall the Galaxy S Advance

This isn’t the first we’re hearing of the Galaxy S3 Mini though, as it has previously been leaked after it was spotted in T-Mobile Netherlands computer system, where it was listed as having a 4-inch screen with an 800 x 480 pixel resolution, a 5-megapixel camera and a 1GHz, dual-core processor. Sammobile.com also repeated these specs in its own leak, and added a possible 250 euro/$320 price tag for good measure.

While this spec list is a considerable step down from the Galaxy S3 we’re already familiar with, that low-end price tag is less than half the cost of the full-size model, potentially pitting the S3 Mini up against Apple’s cheaper iPhone 4S, and leaving the iPhone 5 to its big brother.

The only thing is, the above specification is almost identical to the Galaxy S Advance, a re-worked version of the original Galaxy S which was released earlier this year. Could Samsung be taking the S Advance’s internals and popping them inside an S3-style body, purely to pull the range together and make it easier for the marketing folk? If so, that could explain why it’s not making a big deal over the S3 Mini’s release.

Whatever happens, we’ll find out tomorrow, October 11, when Samsung unveils something small in Frankfurt.

UK’s first 4G network goes live October 30 courtesy of EE, other carriers to wait until 2013

EE 4G Banner

UK network EE will launch its 4G LTE network on October 30, while other carriers wait patiently for the 2013 spectrum auction.

The UK is poised to join the USA and many other countries around the world in offering 4G LTE high speed data to its citizens. This week has seen some important developments, not only because its first 4G LTE network has been given a launch date, but also due to the long-awaited 4G spectrum auction being brought forward to January 2013.

It’s EE, the parent company of Orange and T-Mobile, that has the honor of being the first to switch on a 4G signal. After months of legal wrangling, the network has confirmed it’ll provide a 4G connection in 10 cities from October 30.

CEO Olaf Swantee said in a statement that he was “delighted” to announce the launch of both EE as a brand — a network of EE stores will be opening around the country, through which EE’s 4G LTE phones will be sold — and “the UK’s first super fast mobile 4G and fibre broadband service.”

Initially expected to launch only in London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol, delays have clearly allowed EE to boost its coverage, as 10 cities will now see the benefit of 4G from day one. A press event will be held soon, where those 10 cities and the final six expected to join them by the end of the year, will be revealed.

Early adopters of EE’s 4G service will need a compatible phone, a selection of which can be purchased through the company. The choice may be slim, but it’s eclectic, with the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE, the HTC One XL and the Huawei P1 LTE all available now. The Galaxy Note 2 will also be joining them from October 15, and the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 devices will be added later in the year. Eligible Orange and T-Mobile subscribers will be offered the chance to upgrade too.

Tariff prices haven’t been announced yet, and will probably be discussed at the aforementioned press event, but it’s speculated that monthly costs will increase by around £10.

Spectrum auction brought forward

To enable it to be first out the gate with 4G, EE has refarmed its plentiful reserves of 1800MHz spectrum for 4G use. Its competitors, who don’t have anywhere near enough 1800MHz spectrum to compete, are understandably upset with both EE and the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, who approved the deal back in March.

Since then it has been one long round of complaints and threats from rivals, along with hastily formed partnerships — Vodafone and O2 have joined forces to jointly maintain its nationwide network infrastructure, for example — culminating this week in a meeting between them, Ofcom, EE and the UK government to sort it all out.

Competing firms Vodafone, O2 and Three have been considering legal action against EE, a move that would have delayed both EE’s 4G network launch, and Ofcom’s spectrum auction, which is essential to getting everyone else up and running for 4G.

The meeting not only saw the end of the legal threat, but also the date of the spectrum auction being brought forward to January 2013, which minimizes the period of exclusivity EE has over 4G in the UK. Everybody’s happy, then.

At the auction, all UK networks have the chance to bid on a slice of the 800MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum, which is currently being cleared in preparation for use with 4G. Once the auction concludes, it’s estimated that it will take five or six months to get everything ready.

These positive developments mean Vodafone, O2 and Three will join the 4G party six months earlier than previously thought, with a limited launch being touted for summer 2013. Until then, EE gets to enjoy its moment in the sun as the UK’s only purveyor of high speed 4G data.

Africa’s Anticipated IT Industry Cloud Event Preparations Gains Momentum

The anticipated 3rd annual Cloud and Virtualisation Summit Africa will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, from 10 to 11 October 2012. The event is hosted by international business-to-business conferencing company, Kinetic Events. The must-attend event is aimed at business and technology leaders who need to understand how cloud computing and virtualisation is fundamentally transforming the way in which we think about, acquire and use computing resources.

Enterprise virtualisation projects are the focus of many IT professionals attempting to consolidate servers or data centres, decrease costs and launch successful “green” IT conservation initiatives. To better understand the greater concept of virtualising; IT resources are somewhat ‘squeezed’ from the enterprise computers processing power, memory, bandwidth and storage capacity, while transferring the data gathered onto the smallest number of hardware platforms possible,  and then strategically assigning those resources to operating systems and applications on a time-share basis.

The main driver gearing enterprises in transforming IT models and processes towards virtualisation and cloud computing for some or all of their computing infrastructures, is that the innovative, next-generation technology is a cost effective solution to enterprise IT infrastructures. Cloud computing is reforming the global IT marketplace, offering a more cost effective method for the enterprise to acquire and use IT. The summit focuses on how traditional enterprises are able to successfully adopt cloud computing, featuring industry thought leaders, industry experts and end-user experiences of cloud computing and virtualisation technologies.

The summit is aimed at industry enterprise and technology leaders with the thirst for knowledge and understanding, insight and guidance on how cloud computing and virtualisation is essentially transforming the way in which we think about, acquire and use computing resources. The summit will allow senior decision makers and industry executives to discover the most appropriate and effective level of cloud computing engagement for them, and how innovative cloud technologies can be deployed alongside existing static deployments of hardware and software.

The interactive format of the summit includes a cutting edge agenda offering strategic workshop sessions featuring industry thought leaders and innovative solution providers; expert-led interactive keynote sessions presented by internationally renowned guests, innovative networking and interactive discussion sessions, and an invaluable industry solution providers showcase area.
